to think spending 30k on their baby's 'lifestyle' makes this couple nuts?

My first IABU post so please be kind!

I am very bored today so have been looking through a few news sites. I know it serves me right for looking on the Daily Nazi website but...

AIBU for thinking that spending 30k on a designer 'lifestyle' for a young baby (who lets face it probably would be as happy with furniture from Ikea and clothes from Primarni)is utter madness?

Or perhaps I should just get over it and try to think that its their business how they spend their own money? Xmas Smile

It is their business. However, it is also completely obscene on soooo many levels Shock.

What a warped and mad world we live in.

And as for the "I thought I couldn't conceive so now I'm going to dress my daughter in the most hideous expensive outfits money can buy" argument Hmm, give me strength.

I've been through years of IF but still want my kids to have a sense of perspective on live/material possessions which this princess won't have.

So, in a nutshell, YANBU! Grin

TattytinsellooksDevine · 07/12/2010 13:56

Oh very dear. That is tack.

I tend to think if they can afford it and its money they earned, its really up to them what they spend it on.

I kind of understand the rationale of splashing out a bit - I recently bought a dress for my daughter from I love gorgeous which is bloody expensive to be honest but I justify the odd thing on the basis that its my last child (I have one of each) and my only daughter. I splash out on odd things here and there for my son too of course. And the things you buy that cost a bit more tend to sell well on eBay so you can get some back.

But this, well, is on a whole nother level! The odd party dress is one thing, but I can't wait till she chews that hand-carved cot! Grin

life not live! Blush

Pinkieminx · 07/12/2010 13:57

What else could they spend thier money on? They clearly have no taste so only uber expensive vom inducing tutt will do!!

chocolatebuttontheif · 07/12/2010 13:58

YANBU. That little girl will be a spoilt brat when she's older. If you want to spend that much because you can, fine, but why not put it in a savings account for her future? She certainly won't appreciate it at 4 months old!

FWIW my MIL often comments that DS is always dressed nice, most of his clothes are from next or tesco! Tbh I wouldn't spend any more than I already do on childrens clothes even if I could afford to!

noddyholder · 07/12/2010 13:59

What is that thing on her head?

TattytinsellooksDevine · 07/12/2010 13:59

They would be so much better putting the money aside for her to have a deposit on a house one day or something. Still give her a nice lifestyle, but tuck the rest away.

Or at least tuck it away so she can have no money worries when she's at university or at least to have a nice wardrobe allowance when she's a teenager and can actually appreciate it.

But then again, its not really for her, is it, its for the parents benefit.

Oh well, if that's the way they heal the scars of the past so be it.

YANBU! The baby looks really fed up in the picture, I imagine she's fed up of being dressed in hideous designer clothes!

It's their money so can spend it on what they want I guess, but £80 for a babygro?! Shock Some people misguidedly think the more expensive something is, the nicer it is.

KnittingisbetterthanTherapy · 07/12/2010 14:00

"I think spending a lot of money on nice clothes shows how much you care about your child"

Of course it does love. As I buy my kids' clothes from supermarkets maybe you should report me to social services?Hmm

TattytinsellooksDevine · 07/12/2010 14:00

"what is that thing on her head"

I think it might be a bright pink cabbage...

Lord! She's from my home town - I'll look out for her so I can compliment her on her baby's clothes Grin

WomanOfAbjectMystery · 07/12/2010 14:04

If I had £30k to spend on my new baby, I'd put it in a savings account or pension.

But, on the other hand, they are redistributing their money during a recession, which is a good thing.

bunnyfrance · 07/12/2010 14:06

I'd be mortified if details of my periods were splashed across the national press!

YANBU Vom inducing

stretch · 07/12/2010 14:06

HATE baby headbands!!

YANBU, although the wedding dress made into a christening dress was a nice idea.

orangepoo · 07/12/2010 14:06

I think I can let it go because she is giving her baby the most important thing anyway (love), she is clearly very traumatised by the difficulty she had conceiving and also they have millions of pounds - as long as they have paid off their mortgage and have enough money to live with, I don't really mind if they splurge on the baby. Although it is not something I would personally do. I do think that babies of that age are better off in babygros so that's the only purchase I approve of - the £80 babygros!!

TwinklePants · 07/12/2010 14:08

KnittingisbetterthanTherapy I have struggled with IF too, I think that's partly why I couldn't believe my eyes. I get, that she wants to cherish the daughter she never thought she would have, just seems to me like she's confusing spoiling her (in the sense that she is so wanted and loved) with throwing a big pile of cash at the little mite.

Also had a snarky laugh at one of the quotes in the DM:

"In April 2009, Lisa underwent surgery to have the tumour removed, but there was no guarantee she would be able to have children."

Duh... because the rest of us obviously are given a guarantee, aren't we? [banging head against wall emoticon].

HA HA HA!!! I'm sorry to laugh at this but the bluey green jumper the mother has on is from george at asda £14... I have it!! That made me laugh in amongst all the money she is spending on the child... Grin

PaisleyLeaf · 07/12/2010 14:09

ooo mistletoe, might well be worth checking out the NCT sales in a while round your way.

ziggyf · 07/12/2010 14:09

I don't have a problem with them spending the amount they are on their daughter (they are multi-millionaires so can afford it!). What I do have issues with is them selling a 'story' about it - why would you do that? Especially if you have so much money?

PickleSarnie · 07/12/2010 14:10

The use of the word "gotten" in the first line upsets me the most.

propercrimbo · 07/12/2010 14:10

hastily adds...nothing wrong with George at asda, I have the same jumper, just laughing at the irony!

furrybootsnotjandals · 07/12/2010 14:10

Someone should tell her her daughter seems to have a pink rose growing from her head.

PaisleyLeaf · 07/12/2010 14:11

I also clocked the mum's grey leggings and jumper Grin
