Let's face it. If farmers can't sell them, they have no purpose to keep them. So they become near extinct.

Well, I am not planning to stop eating them. So how will that work then?

It is possible for an animal to exist without being a food source, we just wouldn't need quite so many of them.

If you buy British, chances are the animal has lived a lovely life with no pain or suffering, bar a tiny bit o stress right at the end. If you buy cheap shit from elsewhere then yes, Riven, you're probably right.

I don't think I am TragicHip. I think that a lot of veggies try too hard to force their opinions on others. I once knew a woman who gave a dog a non meat diet. THAT is animal cruelty. And farm animals WOULD become extinct. Where would they live?

The difficulty that many species have in existing given the way that humans tend to treat the envionment is an important point, I agree, but I'm not convinced that it is an arguement for eating meat?

Yes, I missed out the sad chickens - didn't mean to. I eat free range or organic, but British welfare standards are so superior to anywhere else, even if it is battery.

It's true that there would be no sheep on many parts of Britain if people stopped eating lamb. We have next to know woollen industry.

You're showing your ignorance. My OH comes from a farming community which is entirely vegetarian. They keep plenty of cows, and their neighbours keep goats, chickens etc.

mrlee, those animals would die out and be the better for it. They are not bred to live, they are bred to produce. Are you fighting to save the turkey whose legs cannot support its weight? Or the pigs that can't mate unaided?

It's a very silly argument. Were you planning on mentioning at any point that Hitler was a vegetarian? Or banging on about canine teeth? Let's take it as read.

If a vegetarian isn't eating farmed goods due to the fact farming methods are awful then the non existence of the animals is better then a short life of confinement and misery followed by an early death.

Just as many believe zoo's are wrong and animals should be free to live in the wild, just because an animal is endangered doesn't mean the individual should be imprisoned it's all about the welfare of the animal as a living, feeling independent being.
