to think that vegetarians will not be happy until farm animals are extinct

Let's face it. If farmers can't sell them, they have no purpose to keep them. So they become near extinct.

Well, I am not planning to stop eating them. So how will that work then?

It is possible for an animal to exist without being a food source, we just wouldn't need quite so many of them.

TragicallyHip · 06/12/2010 18:18

I can't imagine vegetarians would like any animals to be extinct

I do hate the phrase "let's face it" more than any other I think.

Callisto · 06/12/2010 18:20

If you buy British, chances are the animal has lived a lovely life with no pain or suffering, bar a tiny bit o stress right at the end. If you buy cheap shit from elsewhere then yes, Riven, you're probably right.

ChippingIn · 06/12/2010 18:20

Not you again

Isn't this the trolling DH?

mrleebob · 06/12/2010 18:22

I don't think I am TragicHip. I think that a lot of veggies try too hard to force their opinions on others. I once knew a woman who gave a dog a non meat diet. THAT is animal cruelty. And farm animals WOULD become extinct. Where would they live?

OP posts:
Unrulysun · 06/12/2010 18:22

hasn't the novelty of this worn off yet?

eviscerateyourmemory · 06/12/2010 18:22

The difficulty that many species have in existing given the way that humans tend to treat the envionment is an important point, I agree, but I'm not convinced that it is an arguement for eating meat?

theevildead2 · 06/12/2010 18:22

Fuck we better start eating kittens then! Oh and panda bears they are on their way out must be because we don't eat them!!

Callisto · 06/12/2010 18:24

Yes, I missed out the sad chickens - didn't mean to. I eat free range or organic, but British welfare standards are so superior to anywhere else, even if it is battery.

mrleebob · 06/12/2010 18:24

evildead. You have misunderstood. The majority of farm animals are bred for the sole purpose of being food. Where do they fit into the earth if not for food products?

OP posts:
Unrulysun · 06/12/2010 18:25

Yes it's the dh - I'm finding this really patronising tbh. Not sure why it's irritating me so much. I think it's because I'd like for dh and I to have this much time on our hands - this is not what we'd be doing if we did.

BaroqinAroundTheChristmasTree · 06/12/2010 18:25

" think that a lot of veggies try too hard to force their opinions on others."

Really - I know loads of vegetarians - not one of them has ever tried to force their opinion on me. Live and let live and all that.

Abr1de · 06/12/2010 18:26

It's true that there would be no sheep on many parts of Britain if people stopped eating lamb. We have next to know woollen industry.

panettoinydog · 06/12/2010 18:27

yeah, those darn vegetarians are always muttering about the extinction of farm animals and plotting the revolution.

It's not going to happen but so what if they did become extinct?

magicmummy1 · 06/12/2010 18:27

You're showing your ignorance. My OH comes from a farming community which is entirely vegetarian. They keep plenty of cows, and their neighbours keep goats, chickens etc.

Ever heard of milk, cheese and eggs?

BaroqinAroundTheChristmasTree · 06/12/2010 18:28

Abride - perhaps though if we all stopped eating the lamb then the farmers would turn to wool instead Xmas Grin

TragicallyHip · 06/12/2010 18:28

You asked the question, If you don't think yabu then why did you post? Hmm

I have never met a vegetarian who has tried to force their opinions on me

SuePurblybiltByElves · 06/12/2010 18:28

mrlee, those animals would die out and be the better for it. They are not bred to live, they are bred to produce. Are you fighting to save the turkey whose legs cannot support its weight? Or the pigs that can't mate unaided?

It's a very silly argument. Were you planning on mentioning at any point that Hitler was a vegetarian? Or banging on about canine teeth? Let's take it as read.

Ryoko · 06/12/2010 18:30

If a vegetarian isn't eating farmed goods due to the fact farming methods are awful then the non existence of the animals is better then a short life of confinement and misery followed by an early death.

Just as many believe zoo's are wrong and animals should be free to live in the wild, just because an animal is endangered doesn't mean the individual should be imprisoned it's all about the welfare of the animal as a living, feeling independent being.
