scratchings are the canape du jour
have been offered them in 4 london boroughs so far this year
not out of packet from pub mind you, as all their local pubs converted to overpriced starter flats
probably made from sheets of pork belly.
or bought from m&s, having read this.

does not go well with home made egg nog

i can remember being made to eat ppork belly growning up, the day i found a nipple in my roast dinner put me off for life.

christmaseve · 05/12/2010 22:53

YANBU, I thought exactly the same.

Serendippy · 05/12/2010 22:56

Mmmmmmm, steaky bacon. Can someone please manufacture this?

Santassnowyoldclothcatpuss · 05/12/2010 23:02

U U U U! Pork belly is the bollocks! Grin

Serendippy · 05/12/2010 23:03

Mmmmmmm, pork bollocks.

christmaseve · 05/12/2010 23:05

I've had pork belly in an expensive restaurant, was a set meal, I thought it was disgusting then and would never eat it again.

I eat bacon, pork and ham but have had a kind of vapour thing off all, that tastes, hmm, well piggy! I cannot eat it like that.

Santassnowyoldclothcatpuss · 05/12/2010 23:14

No no no. Pork belly isn't actually bollocks, it's the bollocks! Grin

BecauseImWorthIt · 05/12/2010 23:28

Pork belly is beautiful. It's layers of fat and meat. When it's cooked, slowly, the fat renders off, leaving lovely, tender meat.

It is often cooked with the skin, which will go crispy - a bit like crackling.

Pork scratchings are made entirely from the skin - it's roasted skin and fat that goes crispy.

Both are lovely in their own way!

But pork belly, either in a piece or in squares, is fabulous. The Chinese cook it particularly well.

crystalglasses · 05/12/2010 23:32

TThose pork belly squares look like they contain a thck layer of fat. yuck

BecauseImWorthIt · 05/12/2010 23:34

Fat, for all those of you who are crying 'yuck', is what give meat its lovely soft texture and fantastic flavour!

scoobytoo · 06/12/2010 07:53

Pork belly is gorgeous if cooked right, the fat is cooked so it's crisp, amongst layers of pork meat. If you like pork and crackling you'll like it!

scoobytoo · 06/12/2010 07:57

I can't believe in this country we go yuk at pork belly but yum at sausages, does anyone think about what's in sausages, even the best ones. 90% meat is 90% of any part of the animal including belly if your lucky, eyes and ears and toenails if your not Grin

discobeaver · 06/12/2010 09:43

I can't hear the words Pork Belly without thinking of the film Trading Places, that's what they sell on the stockmarket!

brillopads · 06/12/2010 10:00

The dessert sandwiches are always "reduced for quick sale" in the M&S food on our high street in the evenings, i.e. no-one's daft enough to buy them!

I hate that advert

LaWeaselMys · 06/12/2010 10:14

Pork belly is yum, but do I want it cold on a stick? Noooo.

The squares me think they are supposed to be skewered with cheese and pineapple...

BelovedCunt · 06/12/2010 10:16

i hate those adds, they should have got kerry katona and jason donavan

discobeaver · 06/12/2010 10:34

Skewered on cocktail sticks?

HecTheHallsWithBoughsOfHolly · 06/12/2010 10:39

They just look like big lumps of fat. I can't imagine how that could taste nice.

FellatioNelson · 06/12/2010 10:43

I have said M&S pork belly squares in my fridge right now. I love pork belly. Cooked properly it is divine. The fat renders down leaving melt in the mouth tender meat and crispy crackling.

FellatioNelson · 06/12/2010 10:44

Sorry BIWI - just realised I've repeated everything you've said!

Lovecat · 06/12/2010 10:48

pmsl @ the low-carbers piling on saying how gorge the high fat stuff is! :o (It is, of course... just not sure I want it cold on a cocktail stick at a party)

I went into M&S last week to see what they had in the way of party food, kind of a reconnaissance (sp?) mission before I go and spend actual money, and it all looked viler than a vile thing covered in sick.

I may have to go to ...Iceland... at least their party food looks vaguely edible!

Lovecat · 06/12/2010 10:49

Why didn't my italicising work? grr

PeasPlease · 06/12/2010 10:50

blurgh at the nipple!

Jux · 06/12/2010 11:05

What are pork belly squares?

We have pork belly regularly - it is delicious - but I have no idea what pb squares are.
