What is this 'boycott the bear emoticon' facebook movement?

It seems there is a massive objection to the use of the 'bear emoticon'.

Using it is proof that you are a chav, a DM reader, a false benefits claimant and an invader from netmums.

So fellow mumsnetters - don't do it or you will get ripped to pieces on the boards and behind your back.

swanker, it means I am a netmums invader. This is why MNHQ have not definded it publicly.

Its code for those in the kknow.

I have never been on netmums or FB.

I don't read the DM, claim benefits and am not even too sure I know what a 'chav' is.

The Bear is pleasingly and appropriately(given its derivation) bonkers and therefore it most certainly belongs on MN.

oneofsuesylvesterscheerios · 05/12/2010 00:11

I thought it was shorthand for 'Pombear, anyone?' and therefore ironic and something to do with recognising other MNetters in RL

blackeyedsusan · 05/12/2010 00:11

Bear [fbear] Bear [fbear] Bear

If you don't like the bears, why not sod off to netmums yourself?

cakewench · 05/12/2010 00:11

[fbear]

Trop · 05/12/2010 00:12

This derivation was fed to you by netmums invadees.

They are having fun with you.

madaboutcows · 05/12/2010 00:16

What is a bear emoticon? Seriously, please someone explain? I am very new to MN/Facebook and am now sat here with my glass of wine contemplating all the possibilities!!

Someone please put me out of my misery - I am really hoping it is something very naughty - but I suspect it isn't!!Confused

DooinMeCleanin · 05/12/2010 00:18

it came about after a thread about a v funny dinnert party where the hostess was all posh but served tinned mac and cheese and micro foods. I think it might be in classics.

gibbberish · 05/12/2010 00:19

Down with the damned bear!

Trop · 05/12/2010 00:20

mad, I was having a bit of fun but it seems noone wants to play. There is no facbook boycott and you can use the bear without fear (I just hate it).

C'est la vie.

Knee? Knee? YOu mean Ken?

OP posts:
SlightlyJaded · 05/12/2010 00:26

Objection your honour

I am partly to blame responsible for bear- although i did not start or lead the campaign for the emoticon. And I have never been on netmums . I have heard the myths and legends surrounding it. People speak of flashing banners, extensive use of Comc Sans and copius (((((hugging)))) and I far prefer sweaty mn.

However whilst I defend the origin of the bear and believe that a bonkers emoticon is very useful, I do also agree that there are others which may be even more valuable. I personally would vote for cats bum.

But to care enough to start a pro or anti emoticon campaign is beyond me and, dare I say it, a liitle Bear non?

scottishmummy · 05/12/2010 00:26

you'll have hud yer tea trop

DooinMeCleanin · 05/12/2010 00:29

DO I mean ken? It was geordie I was aiming at

Trop · 05/12/2010 00:33

SlightlyJaded if it were used as a bonkers bear that would be fine but it is too nicey nice and it being used with 'hun'ish connotations to which I object.

But not really that strongly. Its sat eve, I was amusing myself. unfortunately the thread was given far more weight than it should have been.

Pfft. Mumsnetters are argumentative feckers aren't they?

OP posts:
ChippingIn · 05/12/2010 00:34

Trop - please hang your head in shame!!

I actually think the little bear is cute Bear and even more so with his santy hat [fbear] - it's a shame he looks so sad though :(

However, although the Pom Bear threads were amusing, they were not hiliarious and do not warrant their own emoticon.

I also don't want mumsnet ending up looking like netmums (barf) so don't use it on principle.

Trop · 05/12/2010 00:35

No Chipping! I have no shame!

DooinMeCleanin · 05/12/2010 00:36

MN could never look like netmums we want a catbum and a twat emoticon, Can you imagine NM and all their fulffy kittens being so aggressive vulgar?
