To not like being fed leftovers when I am a guest?

alfabetty · 03/12/2010 13:33

Or am I being precious? We went to see some friends for an afternoon, for something to eat while the children play. So not expecting a big meal, just snacks.

What is produced is 'cheese & biscuits'. Which is fine. But every bit of cheese has already been hacked about and partially eaten. So it appears to be leftovers from another meal.

AIBU to expect that if you have guests and are serving them cheese and biscuits, you either cut a chunk off a larger block from your well-stocked pantry (my preferred option... Wink) or nip out and buy a few new lumps of cheese to serve up?

YABU & very stuck up. It is hardly yesterdays leftover shepherds pie is it? Get a grip.

usualsuspect · 03/12/2010 16:56

Bloody hell! the pointy end cut of the brie!! thats outrageous

SpringHeeledJack · 03/12/2010 17:01

alfabetty and merrylegs- I think I wuv you. I have only just this minute realised this [epiphany emoticon] but I would love someone to decant coleslaw into a bowl when I came round. Or offer me brie with the point intact

Will you please be my friends?

...at least two of my (so-called) friends have been seen actually sniffing already-opened hoummous to see if it's ok to put on the table

Grin
SuePurblybiltByElves · 03/12/2010 17:06

It's the nose, the pointy bit isn't it? And rude to cut it off. Maybe send your friends on an etiquette course for Christmas? Xmas Wink

MrsNonSmoker · 03/12/2010 17:10

alfabetty - I'm with you, I had exactly the same cheese based experience with some friends, was a bit yuk to be honest, but that's when you have to grin, bite your tongue and the crummby pickley cheese, and say but they are my bestest friends in the world and that's how the cheese crumbles.

BTW I also have friends who don't wash their hands before eating, not same people, and again, I've learnt to live with it. And become full very quickly and suddenly at their house! I feel a PomBear moment coming on .... Wink

GMajor7SwansASwimming · 03/12/2010 17:12

YABU Cheese is horrible smelly stuff anyway.

alfabetty · 03/12/2010 17:15

Ah! the tide is turning as the evening crowd joins in...

Just as I was about to consider conceding that I am an utterly unreasonable houseguest.

As I was... Smile

Hmmm.

I would have put the coleslaw in a ramekin, and cut the brie a new nose...

But I have FAR too much time on my hands Bear

I love and adore this thread.

Pancakeflipper · 03/12/2010 18:06

Is it not the rule to use NEW cheese and decant the coleslaw to those you actually wish to entertain? Any riff-raft get the leftovers?

Megatron · 03/12/2010 18:10

Well that is the most ridiculous OP I've ever come across. You have FAR too much time on your hands.

alfabetty · 03/12/2010 18:12

No no no. We were invited. More, say, afternoon tea, if you will, than popping in or a playdate.

It was an event, which I would have planned for.

Pancake, we get the good stuff everywhere else we go, I really don't think it's that Wink.

IssiNoho · 03/12/2010 18:13

YADNBU - cheese must look fresh and unused. The slightest hint that it has been mauled is off-putting. And yes to decanting coleslaw.

SpringHeeledJack · 03/12/2010 18:15

hang on. are you the one with the pomander??

darleneconnor · 03/12/2010 18:18

You dont like cheese wrapped in clingfilm? WTF!

here's a Biscuit to go with your cheese.

Pancakeflipper · 03/12/2010 18:19

Alfabetty - you certain hosts are not licking the posh crisps prior to your arrival?

One way to tell if they were chipper about your grand visit is if the red carpet had been ironed or had it crease marks in it? I only iron the crease marks for those I like. I am sure you do the same Wink

alfabetty · 03/12/2010 18:21

Not pomander lady, though I had some sympathy. I tend to sniff my wrist (perfume) when faced with an unpleasant public transport situation.

alfabetty · 03/12/2010 18:22

SpringHeeledJack - really. Slightly repulsed but did laugh out loud!

MarshaBrady · 03/12/2010 18:23

alfabetty, do you know what. Your description of the half-eaten cheese doesn't make it sound that appetising. Although conversely was very poetic. Especially the forlornly flapping edam red wax.

.... so yanbu

lostinafrica · 03/12/2010 18:28

PMSL, especially at vine growing through table and ironed red carpet.

What a great thread!

My DH decants and tidies up cheeses. I've been married to him long enough that the other night I found myself arranging slices of chicken so that they were all sort of pointing to the centre of the plate - for a quiet dinner for friends! So I can see your pov.

I do wonder whether you should've taken a photo of the spread, to save all the time explaining to us what it was like. Grin

SpringHeeledJack · 03/12/2010 18:28

see, I would have absent mindedly torn off the flapping Edam red wax and rolled it into a satisfying little warm ball

mmmmmmm

MarshaBrady · 03/12/2010 18:31

It does sound like the cheese at my parent's house after we have all had some. A big ol' mess

taintedsnow · 03/12/2010 18:32

Ooh this thread is funny. alfabetty, you're bloody crazy and completely unreasonable, but you've given me a good laugh, so thanks!

SpringHeeledJack · 03/12/2010 18:33

...am picturing that thing- you know, where you put all the cheeses on a slate and write the individual names in chalk

"primula light"

"primula ham"

"primula prawns" (note- Christmas only)

"own brand Dairylea type spread"

"Morrison's Edam style slices"

OhYouSnowySnowyKitten · 03/12/2010 18:35

(does anyone else really fancy cheese and biscuits now?)
