To not like being fed leftovers when I am a guest?

Or am I being precious? We went to see some friends for an afternoon, for something to eat while the children play. So not expecting a big meal, just snacks.

What is produced is 'cheese & biscuits'. Which is fine. But every bit of cheese has already been hacked about and partially eaten. So it appears to be leftovers from another meal.

AIBU to expect that if you have guests and are serving them cheese and biscuits, you either cut a chunk off a larger block from your well-stocked pantry (my preferred option... Wink) or nip out and buy a few new lumps of cheese to serve up?

Folding corners of toilet rolls bit over the top loo rolls loo roll. I agree if it was my fiends house I dont care if they have'nt given me 'brand new cheese' its not gonna go off over night. Just posh and ungrateful clearly, my opinion

:)

alfabetty · 03/12/2010 13:56

No, def no teeth marks, I would have had to say something then.

But I like a nice cheeseboard with lots of big lumps of cheese. So half-finished lumpettes were a let-down Sad.

Grin YABU, but I think you know that. You were at a playdate not a dinner party.

alfabetty · 03/12/2010 13:57

But the company was good. I am not completely evil and shallow.... Wink

Serendippy · 03/12/2010 13:57

When offered a cheeseboard, do you eat every bit of every cheese?

AgentZigzag · 03/12/2010 13:57

What you mean is you didn't think your friend made an effort to make her meal look aesthetically pleasing, which is a bit OTT for the occasion.

Unless she was trying to fawn over Mr and Mrs Farquharson and make a good impression, she was only giving her mate a bit of scoff.

Unless there's a reason why she should be trying to impress you?

alfabetty · 03/12/2010 13:59

Serendippy, I do give it a good go. If not at one sitting, once the guests have left...

Perhaps I'm just not used to leftovers.

Maybe it was crumbly cheese that just doesn't cut neatly?

Anyway you would have a hernia if you were my landlord a few weeks back. He was doing some work for us over lunch so I offered him some. It was reheated left over pizza with salad etc.

He seemed very pleased at the time, but now I'm wondering if he's secretly planning to evict us over leftover food Xmas Hmm

YABU in case you missed that.

LaWeaselMys · 03/12/2010 14:01

You are taking your unreasonableness very well though.

cross-posted writing my leftover related essay.

alfabetty · 03/12/2010 14:08

Hmmm. I did have an inkling my reaction was unusual. DH didn't seem fussed.

It was planned, we didn't just drop in, and when we get together with people, it is quite low key because of all the children, but I usually make a bit of an effort - nice cakes, good coffee, NEW cheese. Etc.

Rebeccash · 03/12/2010 14:11

YABU not everyone can afford new cheese and good coffee. Does that mean they shouldn't have guests round?

SuePurblybiltByElves · 03/12/2010 14:14

I am liking the idea of them popping fresh packets of crackers at the table for you, like dealers at Vegas.

Is Brie off the menu then as it's cut from a wheel? Or is it OK as long as the supermarket cling-film lines are still evident?

AgentZigzag · 03/12/2010 14:15

I might buy one or two bits of cheese I couldn't normally afford, but put them out with the ones I already had.

This is one reason I don't like to have guests round, cos they end up judging you on random things you couldn't possibly predict.

Talking of coffee, was that leftover from a previous time too?

jamaisjedors · 03/12/2010 14:21

pmsl at "new cheese"!

Did you want it shrink-wrapped?

As MaDugHerDecsOut said, ALL cheese is from a bigger block anyway.

Don't come to France then, everyone has old bits of cheese in the fridge for weeks and then serves them up after each meal - we might buy some extra but I wouldn't hide the other stuff!

What's wrong with the coleslaw being open?

Shock
SuePurblybiltByElves · 03/12/2010 14:22

I have never considered being judged by my cheeseboard before. What of my grapes? I don't uproot an entire vine to drape it artfully over the board, sometimes I buy them in a bag. And then use leftover branches. And the chutney! Opened last week for a (very nice as it happens) sandwich.
The Shame.
Xmas Grin

Sparklywine · 03/12/2010 14:23

I think I might have tried to 'neaten' the cheese up mind. I don't normally post but the cheese compelled me.
Nigel Slater is always banging on about 'leftovers', whereas to me it's just stuff I have in that I haven't used up yet. His 'leftover cheese' last week appeared to be totally unmolested and was wrapped in brown paper, so he'd be with you I think alfabetty Grin

SoupDragon · 03/12/2010 14:24

oh, for the love of god...

5GoldenFimbos · 03/12/2010 14:26

You started this thread for a laff didn't you, Alfabetty? G'wan admit it, otherwise I am seriously worried about you.Xmas Grin

5GoldenFimbos · 03/12/2010 14:27

Did the dc have fruitshoots and half a sausage roll between them?

pottonista · 03/12/2010 14:28

Did it have teeth-marks in? If not, YABU and really rather precious.

Jux · 03/12/2010 14:30

I have a vine growing through my kitchen table to ensure guests never have to pick from an old bunch. Am I the only one? Surely this is normal?

OP, you are quite right. It's a very bad show and I would never speak to those people again; they are clearly frightfully infra dig.

lisad123isasnuttyasaboxoffrogs · 03/12/2010 14:31

maybe her other half is like mine and doesnt think before he eats anything in the fridge, but to honest YABVU and weird too
