Lady in the 'Handbasket' queue with TWO baskets- outrageous behaviour?

Just been to Morrisons in my lunch-hour. It was rammed- think all the pensioners are stocking up 'cos of the snow! Joined the handbasket queue and the woman in front, when she reached the conveyor belt, said "Excuse me I have another basket over there" and ran to pick it up before returning to her space. Must admit I was so gobsmacked I was speechless. She kept the whole queue of doddery pensioners waiting while she unloaded them both, as well as all the catfood from under her arms!

Talk about not playing by the rules...

Lol we didn't even hold up the queue as 2 people in front had yet to be served....... So the wait was looooooonnnnngggg!

flingingflangin · 30/11/2010 17:38

I would just stop shopping in Morrissons tbh.

nancydrewrockinaroundxmastree · 30/11/2010 18:43

Our M&S has a "10 items or less" section.

It is very strictly enforced!

AphraBen · 30/11/2010 18:45

I would never do this, but what REALLY pisses me off is the busybody who stands behind me in the line ostentatiously COUNTING the items in my basket (when I'm in the 15 items or less que) making sure I haven't got more than 15. And I never have, because being a totally sad fuck I keep to the rules not to put anyone out.

flingingflangin · 30/11/2010 18:50

The thing I like about the ten items or less queue is nosing into other peoples baskets. Single man with salmon, 3bottles of wine and a bag of salad. Clearly thinks he's in with a chance Wink.
Mine, bag of nachos, pack of nappies, chocolate and 3 bottles of wine. Mother end of her tether.

Handbasket only - is not the same as "Ten items or less".

It doesn't say "one handbasket only", so it is not unreasonable to have two on the odd occasion. I've often carried two around (when there weren't any shallow trolleys left). It depends what you need to buy and how bulky it is. One six-pint of milk takes up a lot of room in a basket, along with a multi-bag of crisps.

Obviously it would be stupid to have a whole family there with a basket each putting them all through on the same bill, but I don't think two handbaskets carried by one person is OTT. If it said "ten items or less" this would be unreasonable.

YABU. Baskets is baskets is baskets.

"I was stopped in M&S food once going through the handbasket till with a trolley. I had two items in it. Bloody jobsworth."

Butterbur, this once happened to the woman in front of me in Sainsbury's - she had a trolley with about three items in it. I was the only person behind her in the queue, and I didn't give a toss whether her three items were in a basket or a trolley, but the idiot of a shop assistant refused point blank to serve her. The woman was obviously fuming, and I said that I didn't mind her going in front of me at all, but the jobsworth behind the till insisted that she wasn't allowed to serve her, and so the poor woman had to go and queue up all over again - while cursing furiously!

Unbelievable!

onepieceoflollipop · 30/11/2010 19:47

If I had 2-3 items in a trolley and tried to go in a "basket only" queue then I would ask the till operator to call the manager if he/she refused to serve me.

really, I would. Most people that have 2-3 items in a trolley have done so for a reason. e.g. heavy item that they cannot easily carry, sleeping baby in the trolley, some sort of disability.

DuelingFanio · 30/11/2010 19:48

life is FAR too short Grin

onepieceoflollipop, I'd have asked for the manager as well. In fact, I almost asked for the manager on behalf of the woman in front of me because I thought it was so outrageous, but it was obviously a battle that she couldn't be arsed to fight.

As you say, she might have been disabled or had another good reason for not carrying a basket. I note that a lot of shops now state the number of items instead of trolley or basket, and this is probably much more sensible.

2 full baskets? I'd have been too impressed by her triceps to get annoyed Grin I HATE baskets weakling emotion

stleger · 30/11/2010 20:13

What annoys me is the outrageous behaviour in Lidl - couple who go in separate queues to see which is fastest, then join together and amalgamate their goods. My dh is horrified at people who phone their order to the chipper.(We have a sophisticated lifestyle)

bupcakesandcunting · 01/12/2010 10:06

"Which branch bupcake, the new one or the old?"

Old. Shock Twas you wasn't it? Next time I'll kick you in the muff, alright?

Wink
gramercy · 01/12/2010 10:12

Can I just say that I was most gratified to see that the sign in M&S said "10 items or fewer " Yay! My red pen could stay safely in my bag.

gramercy · 01/12/2010 10:15

stieger: not just Lidl behaviour. I saw the "smug sixty-something race" in Waitrose. A trolley each in separate queues and then the fastest one beckoned the other over. I would never have the nerve. That age group absolutely take the prize for being the rudest and pushiest people on this planet.

frgr · 01/12/2010 10:16

my mum does the odd bit of shopping for my nan and uses two baskets in that queue most of the time... nan is fiercely independant and wants a receipt (to make sure my mum hasn't paid for any of her shopping!) at the end of it. so if mum wants to buy anything for herself she just uses two baskets. i admit i've done the same when i do it...

i do think it's wrong to have two baskets stuffed full of items to the brim though, i can understant your irritation...

but i wanted to point out that if it's only a few items (under the item limit) but someone is using two baskets they're not all mad :) they maybe just have a mad relative to answer to Grin
