Kitted 3 kids out with full brand new school uniforms this Sep.

For the main everyday uniform followed it to the letter buying all the jumpers with school emblem on, correct colour trousers, skirts, shirts, trousers, shoes and ties.

Bought all the correct PE T-Shirts (and rugby shirts) with school emblem on.

Bought DS1 "correct" school navy shorts for PE and plain navy blue socks and navy blue trakkie bottoms both of which are not from the uniform shop apparently are not allowed.

DS1 has been told if he does not have the correct gear by next week he will get a detention and was made to do PE in his shorts and t-shirt today outside Angry

AIBU to feel pissed off he was made to do it in the freezing cold in a t-shirt and shorts when its 0 degrees here today and pissed off that what I have provided is only PE kit and is the same as the school stuff just half the price.

Where do I stand here and AIBU?

Yes but do you have as many different kinds? Grin

I mean, can you have really high temps in summer, minus 12 in winter (quessing yes to that one!), flash floods in November and all the rest?

Phone up one of the Parent Governors and ask them to raise the issue at a Governors meeting.

'It's not friggin sadism'

You probably didn't go to my school, then.

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 25/11/2010 22:05

My friend was from Toronto and used to laugh when the trains stopped because of snow in the UK.

When you have 'proper' weather - you have 'proper' means of dealing with it. It snowed where I live this morning (hardly very much and it didn't settle) and there was a 5 car pile up before 8 in the morning!

Joolyjoolyjoo · 25/11/2010 22:07

YANBU- that sounds ridiculous!

Firstly because they did not specify that it had to be from the school supplier.

Secondly because if they have a problem with the uniform YOU have appropriated for your son they should take it up with YOU- not make your son freeze, then threaten him with detention- that is madness, and unfair in the extreme

Ladyanonymous · 25/11/2010 22:09

He thanked me for my email and said he had tried to phone me but the system was down and he couldn't get my home number but would be looking into it 1st thing tomorrow morning and call me tomorrow and "rectify" the situation.

May have been something to do with me posting the direct gov link, mentioning Michael Gove and the PE depts "Duty of Care" to my son - and copying and pasting the schools PE kit Grin

Thanks Mners x

Sounds very thorough.

Well done. Let us know how it goes tomorrow!

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 25/11/2010 22:29

Good on him for replying so quickly. Hopefully the teachers will have a more sensible policy now for the rest of the winter!

Joolyjoolyjoo · 25/11/2010 22:36

Yay- good for you Smile Tell him to drop and give you 20 by way of apology!

YANBU. I have a similar problem with DD's school. Bought her plain white school shirts in the last week of August, in an age 15. She has grown 2 inches since then and her shirts do not stay 'tucked in' to her trousers. She has been given detentions for this as it is in breach of the uniform code. I wouldn't mind, but I cannot find any shirts that meet the uniform criteria in the shops.

DD is now in a ladies size 8 for tops. Can I find a plain white shirt in a size 8 anywhere that doesn't either have pintucks on the chest area or frills on the collar? No I bloody can't. So I literally have the otion of sending her in shirts that are not long enough to tuck in, or sending her half naked in just her bra. Do the school give a monkeys? No. Will they tell me where to buy her a shirt? No. Are they continuing to give her detentions for having her shirt untucked? YES. It's got to the point now where I have rung the HoY and told her that until I can FIND a shirt in the shops, DD will not be attending any pointless detentions that are given for something well outside of DD's control. (I.e. what design of shirts the clothes shops I can get to in my area are stocking!).

CardyMow · 25/11/2010 23:16

Oh and BTW, DD is a tall 12yo, she's 5ft2.

borderslass · 25/11/2010 23:19

loudlass newlook and asda sell plain girls school shirts got them for DD2. might be worth a look if you have them shops.

Hawkmoth · 26/11/2010 07:03

Loudlass, men's shirts? I used to (I'm tall).

I thought British people talked about the weather because although it's changeable, it's all very mild and nonthreatening - if you bring it up as a topic, there's less chance than in other countries of someone close to your conversational partner having been killed or maimed by severe weather conditions.

TBH i think your response was a bit extreme, but it sounds like his handling of the situation was extreme too. Hope all gets sorted out.

This is stupid.

Still those who can do, those who can't teach and those who can't teach teach PE Grin

DaftApeth · 26/11/2010 08:53

I'm also interested to hear the teacher's response.

I hope he does not 'rectify' the situation by changing the uniform list to state pe kit only from the uniform shop!! Grin

I'd love to hear that the PE teacher has been made to do his lessons outside with no jumper and in shorts by way of 'training' Grin

Onetoomanycornettos · 26/11/2010 10:56

We wore our 'knicker shorts' throughout the summer and winter, to play hocky and so on, they were literally a pair of knickers in the school colours. It was only in the sixth form that you were allowed a skirt.

You are right to complain about the monopoly of only having one supplier for branded goods. I personally send my children in similar nicer cardigans which are cotton and not cheap polyester. I don't expect to have it mentioned and so far, so good.

LaWeaselMys · 26/11/2010 11:28

Canada clearly has worse weather than us. Surely that is obvious?

Talking about the weather is ingrained habit as far as I can tell.

Hope there is a decent answer to this! I agree YANBU.
