I have known for 20 years has just announced she is pregnant ... I was thrilled to hear the news allbeit from her mum and so rang to congratulate and offer any stuff, advice etc.
Now she has progressively got worse in the I earn a lot of money and only buy really expensive stuff so maybe I shouldn't have been surprised that my offer was turned down flat with a 'my child will only be having the absolute best' tirade. Suggested BioOil ... 'Oh no I've bought the most expensive Lancome' ... etc. etc.
To be honest, I wished her well, got off the phone and cried.
Whilst I'm a SAHM with a lovely DP who has other kids (ie. we pay a huge whack in maintenance) and live in a falling down rented house that we're slowly making nice, we have absolutely no spare cash for anything not essential, but my DS is always well kitted out and has really good stuff it is 2nd hand and I go without so DS doesn't. I cook everything from scratch, grow fruit and veg in garden, dye old towels, re-use. recycle etc and tend to give homemade presents ... christamas baskets of jam, sweeties, limnoncello, mince pies etc..
She earns a lot of money, spends it all and more so whilst she does have a gorgeous flat I know she's got a massive mortgage and huge credit card debts.
S AIBU to delete her from Facebook and my phone and hope her legs swell like an elephant ?
Oh and apparently Burberry don't do plain white babygros ....

Don't delete her, she just sounds abit twattish. Lancome or not, she will still have a belly like a saggy bollock.

ASecretLemonadeDrinker · 24/11/2010 11:58

Anyway, poor is the new black. Nothing like abit of competitive poorness Wink Or lagh and say you better buy some shares in burberry/lancome/DAKS or whatever :)

Saggy bollocks Grin

If she makes you feel shite about yourself - delete her. She sounds rather tacky tbh, can't stand it when people brag about their wealth, especially by threatening to dress their babies in Burberry babygro's of all fecking things [vom]

anonacfr · 24/11/2010 12:01

Might be OTT but I understand the feeling totally.
I was disappointed when I got pregnant that no-one else I knew had babies (aside from my sister who strangely didn't even ask me about my pregnancy). I would have loved tips and advice!

I guess she's suffering from the typical 1st-time-pregnant syndrome. She's going to waste loads of cash on cashmere babygros and expensive creams that she'll never use. Oh well. I got a bit carried away with DC1 to be fair. When it came to DC2 it was all sale/cheap stuff, and Lansinoh. All you need.
I'm pregnant at the moment and I'm going to buy one nice blanket and soft toy and the rest will be dug out from the loft. I have one of each so both sides are covered!

pingusmumtoo · 24/11/2010 12:01

Should add she didn't bother with DS 2nd birthday at all, never calls and has been outright rude to DP on numerous occasions in front of him and others ....
Think she got the arse at not being godmother ... we don't believe in god so it seemed a bit ridiculous to have him christened.

OP posts:
woopsidaisy · 24/11/2010 12:01

And she hasn't had the baby yet! All the designer gear in the world won't make the baby sleep at night. Let her spout off,you can be there for her when she hits rock bottom after a few weeks of sleepless nights. She probably doesn't mean to be an arse.

FranSanDisco · 24/11/2010 12:02

Friendships move on so perhaps it's time you deleted her if she makes you feel so low.

Ooopsadaisy · 24/11/2010 12:07

Doesn't sound like the sort of friend I'd want online or in the real world.

ullainga · 24/11/2010 12:09

Just a thought but..are you sure that this is the way she actually meant it or maybe you are a bit sensitive at the moment? Maybe she just wanted to say that thanks for the offer, but she already has bought the necessary things/knows what she wants to buy? And she did not actually want to offend you or seem like a show-off?

I'm just thinking from the other side, a dear old relative recently offered that as we have moved house, she could give us her old pots and pans. But I already knew which ones I wanted to buy and really did not need an extra set, so I thanked her for the thought but said no, thanks. Am now wondering if she also heard it as "I am so rich and don't need your junk" or something, which was definitely not what I meant..Blush

fedupofnamechanging · 24/11/2010 12:11

If she contributes nothing positive to your life, then I can't see the point in keeping her in it tbh. You shouldn't be getting off the phone and crying. Friends are supposed to make you feel happier.

senua · 24/11/2010 12:12

One can make limoncello!? Do tell how

(Sorry Blush That's not helping your friend-woe, is it. Grin)

FindingMyMojo · 24/11/2010 12:13

if you compare yourself to others you'll always find a way to come up short. Sounds like she is only being herself no matter how twattish - she's not exactly changed her character though has she?

Don't know why you are so offended - I'm not rich but I wouldn't use BioOil either being that it's main ingredient is mineral oil & it's full of loads of chemical crap despite masquerading as a 'natural' product.

Perhaps you're just having a bad day? Your life sounds lovely & you don't want to be like her so what's the problem? She's being a bit precious with all this 'only the best' bollocks which personally makes me laugh (what some people tell themselves!!!) - she may be yearning to be SAHM like you in 18 months time when she's off back to work to keep Burberry/Lancome in business but really want's to stay home with PFB.

wingandprayer · 24/11/2010 12:14

Oh god sack her off as it sounds like you get nothing from this relationship and she behaves like a right cow towards you.

Revel in the fact that all the designer gear in the world won't make the first few weeks less hellish or make the baby sleep more. Leave her to her ridiculous delusions of grandeur. And I used Clarins anti stretch mark oil religiously and still ended up looking like a relief map of the Lake District!

badfairy · 24/11/2010 12:14

She sounds shallow, but so are a lot of people. I have relatives whose only topics of conversation when we get together are the latest piece of art they bought and the fact that they will be off to Mauritus for Christmas and sometimes it is hard not to hit the envy button. But you need to ask yourself why does she feel the need to tell you all this stuff? What is she trying to prove? If it is that she is better than you then clearly she feels threatened or jealous of what you have. We live in a world where for a lot of people success is measure by what you ownand how much you have , but in reality its all bollocks.

Only you know whether it is just her being an arse at the moment because she is nervous about her first baby and has some misplaced idea that spending a fortune will some how make her a better mother or whether in fact she has always been like this and your friendship has in fact run its course.

pingusmumtoo · 24/11/2010 12:15

ullainga ... nope it was definately an 'up yours i'm rich' ... I'm not talking about crap stuff either ... m & p, tripp trapp, mothercare, mini boden ...
I work on the principle that if I can get it 2nd hand on Ebay or wherever for the same price George at Asda would be new I'll do it ...
I'm not a fan of 'disposable' society.

OP posts:
pingusmumtoo · 24/11/2010 12:19

senua ... I think it's just lemons, juiced and rinded, icing sugar and vodka - mix, leave for few days, strain and decant ... had two bottles lurking that haven't been drunk so will be decanting said brew into smaller bottles I've acumulated.

OP posts:
snowmummy · 24/11/2010 12:19

droves · 24/11/2010 13:07

for your friend

this is perfect for her

Grin enjoy !

chaya5738 · 24/11/2010 13:22

Delete her if she makes you so unhappy that you cry when you get off the phone. But I do think it is important to step back and see if perhaps you are being a little sensitive.

TBH, I hated getting advice from all fields when I was pregnant. Are you sure she didn't just getting annoying by calling up and being a know-it-all. I am not saying you were like that but just that she might have felt you were.
