To feel unusually warm towards Arsenal FC?

So, the other week I got into a bit of a strop in the Arsenal shop. DD went to get her surname put on the back of her Arsenal shirt with her birthday money and was told she'd have to pay for 2 surnames because hers was too long - it's mine and dh's with a space in between - 11 letters and a space. It's £6 for the name on the back of your shirt, so £12 for two which is pretty steep we thought. So we left with me in a fury crying rip-off, discrimination against long surnames etc and dd rather sad.

I contacted the chief exec of Arsenal, as you do and he explained politely that the policy is to print up to 12 letters for £6.

So I replied saying:
"First our surname has 11 letters and a space - so not sure why they wanted to charge me twice?
Secondly on that basis should you charge per additional letter - e.g. plus £1 per additional letter rather than another £6 (£12 in total) if you happen to have a 13 letter name and thirdly, if you are charging on basis of the number of letters, why aren't short names cheaper - eg if it was Rob, shouldn't I expect to pay less?

All in all I think it would be nicer to charge on the basis of a surname is a fixed price - no discrimination against feminists who go for both parental names! - and seems less officious/ un fan friendly to me."

And his reply (on the same day):
"We agree and are changing our policy to a fixed price regardless of length of name. We'll be the first among clubs to adopt this policy!"

Hoorah - I'm not a Gooner but I think that's a pretty top response from Mr Ivan Gazidis. So, good for Arsenal - and only a couple of days after they lost at home to Tottenham too Grin.

Ah, but I imagine that any head of a company would be rather scared of you Justine Grin

JustineMumsnet · 22/11/2010 23:06

Oh he's probably never heard of MN - either way dd is v pleased Smile.

Did he know that you are the Justine?

Vallhala · 22/11/2010 23:09

X posted - in that case, all the more credit to him even though he's part of the Gooner outfit--.

JustineMumsnet · 22/11/2010 23:14

Well we should think about football stuff shouldn't we - I mean it's not like Roman needs to charge all that!

Hmm... now there's a campaign challenge - to try to persuade Roman to enable Vallhala to visit the Bridge again.

Sadly, I can't see it catching on somehow. :(

In all seriousness, it's fantastic that footie is far more family friendly than it was when I started whatching Chelsea play 30 years ago, but that's not much ruddy use if the family can't afford to attend. I gave up going to matches owing to lack of childcare when I had DD1 but now that the girls are of an age to enjoy it and would love to see the team play, it's just not affordable once we've added on travel costs and something to eat on the day.

and the kits and the names on the back and the football league/champions league badges. Seriously a kit for me 8 year old with all the trimmings is about £70 - probably costs about £1.50 to make in China...

This week, and for one week only, I am prepared to concede that Arsenal may have shown some decency on this occasion. But I suppose they have to be decent at something... Go Spurs Justine!

huddspur · 23/11/2010 00:21

YABVU- Gooners are the scum of the earth.
Seeing Wenger throw a tantrum with a water bottle when we got our third on Saturday is my moment of the year

narkypuffin · 23/11/2010 01:03

It was the way he threw the bottle, then threw the lid. Perhaps we should send over some toddlers to show him how it should be done.

Cadpat · 23/11/2010 04:33

Last time I checked we were still above them Spuds in the table... so not sure why the tantrum is a big deal :)

Cough.... Carling Cup... cough!!!

CrazyPlateLady · 23/11/2010 09:43

locotitis · 23/11/2010 11:41

Rockbird · 23/11/2010 11:44

What else would you expect from the Gunners? They are princes among men.

mayorquimby · 23/11/2010 11:47

yanbu
in the past 5 years I've gone from hating the gunners to being wholly indifferent to them.
Suppose that's what happens when a team stops being a genuine tital rival though.
