To contemplate living without a tumble dryer?

My washer/dryer has conked out and I'm thinking of replacing it with just a washing machine. I don't really have the space for a seperate tumble dryer but am I mad to consider not having one?

Ive never had one, I really dont see the point in them-just like dish washers!

Get rid you wont know its missing

sausagelover · 19/11/2010 13:45

Well, did you often use the drying part of your washer/dryer?

ShatnersBassoon · 19/11/2010 13:46

It depends how much space you have for clothes horses, how much banister space you have for drying big things like sheets, if you have a warm but ventilated house etc etc.

I can cope without using the dryer most days, but I like having the convenience of being able to clear the house of wet washing when I want/need to.

Ormirian · 19/11/2010 13:46

Don't have one. Got rid of ours 4 years ago. never missed it.

MerryMarigold · 19/11/2010 13:46

I have a tumble, but don't use it that often. Just that time of year when the radiators are not on, but it is not warm enough to dry clothes fully outside. I just use it generally to 'finish' off, or to make teddies fluffy!

Indith · 19/11/2010 13:46

Not mad at all, plenty of us survive without! I've never had one and had 2 in cloth nappies at one point.

Sinkingfeeling · 19/11/2010 13:47

I've never had one - and I had three children under two and used washable nappies for them all. My granny would be proud! :)

sfxmum · 19/11/2010 13:47

we don't have one and neither do we have a microwave and dishwasher, this seems to make us odd but hey never miss it

InkyStamp · 19/11/2010 13:47

We dont have one either. Tis fine! :) Depends on how much you use it and how much space you have.

PlentyOfPockets · 19/11/2010 13:47

I manage without one, but there is always washing hanging in the hallway in the winter. If you have enough hanging space and you dont mind that, YANBU. My mum's plumber reckons the combined washer/driers don't last as long as separates.

PuppyMonkey · 19/11/2010 13:47

Couldn't live without my dishwasher or my tumble dryer. Saves so much time on ironing. The tumble dryet, I mean, not the dishwasher. Grin

Meglet · 19/11/2010 13:47

Possibly, yabu. How will you dry things on rainy winter days when the everyone has a D&V bug? That's why I have one.

Most of the year I just use it for towels but it's a lifesaver during the winter.

PinkieMinx · 19/11/2010 13:48

YABU to have one in first place. We had one when we ran a busy business - other than that never needed one.

ChickensHaveNoLips · 19/11/2010 13:48

Mine died 2 years ago and I've never replaced it.

ramonaquimby · 19/11/2010 13:49

couldn't be without one living in a damp wet country like england with 3 young kids

I tripped over and snapped the door off my tumble drier in the summer. Thought I couldn't cope without it but it was fine. Mind you I have a load of space for airers in the utility room.

Is a bit more difficult now winter is here as I always have bedding to dry and it takes ages on airers, is too wet to hang outside most of the time.

So am thinking of getting another one for duvet covers. Oh, and socks. i hate crunchy socks.

So, you can do without it, but if you don't have a utility room or something your house will probably look like a laundry if you have a lot of washing.

plupervert · 19/11/2010 13:50

We have a drying rack, which I really recommend:

It's either at Lakeland or our one was from a catalogue which came in a weekend newspaper (I think ours was about £50-£60. The bars are not too hot for DS to touch (in fact they couldn't be, or the clothes would fry)

Itsjustafleshwound · 19/11/2010 13:51

I live in a small house and there is very little room to have a free standing drying rack and radiator space is limited. I love my tumble drier and it comes into its own in the winter months

I couldn't live without my washing machine and tumble drier - but could do without my dishwasher and microwave.

PuppyMonkey · 19/11/2010 13:51

So only people who run busy businesses need a tumble dryer? Hmm

wondersnuffle · 19/11/2010 13:51

Same here, no dryer but do have a dishwasher and microwave.
I do seem to spend quite a lot of my life hanging out washing and then moving slightly damp washing to indoor airers in the evening, slightly faffy but it is much nicer when it's been outside for a bit.

PuppyMonkey · 19/11/2010 13:52

Yeah, much nicer when it's been out in the fog. Grin

bruffin · 19/11/2010 13:53

I couldn't live without mine. I have lots of trees in the garden so cannot hang outside and don't have lots of space to hang inside.

hairtwiddler · 19/11/2010 13:53

Second the heated aired. Always throw a duvet cover over ours. Traps the air and things dry quickly.

GetOrfMoiLand · 19/11/2010 13:53

'YABU for having one in the first place?'

Slightly daft comment imo.

Funnily enough I could do without my microwave (only seem to use it to reheat cups of coffee - a habit which my DP thinks is despicable) and I would never have a dishwasher, I think they are a complete waste of time.
