To have complained about the security guard

I was in Tesco's today, and some bloke had been shop lifting and got caught (good job too!) They were walking him(five of them by the way) past all the tills. When they got level with myself and my two children, a stupid female security guard came running up behind him, and elbow dropped his arm, and started punching him in the kidneys.

Well i was disgusted to say the least! She had no right to put her hands on him, he was not struggling and had his arms secured behind his back by five of her colleagues!

He was a very big bloke, 6ft7 minimum, and this made him angry, as i imagine it would anyone! And he swung around and it caused more of a scuffle, right next to my children.

So i made a complaint, and i will complain to her manager next time i am in the shop too.

AIBU?

No, YANBU. He was committing a crime, he got caught and was being dealt with. No need for gratuitous violence.

scurryfunge · 18/11/2010 15:45

What on earth was she thinking?

Thats what i think to, he was still only being held under suspicion as he had not been found guilty by a court.

I wonder how a jumped up P$£%& such as this bird managed to get jobs in security! Probably was not good enough for the police.

This is veru unusual. Im sure Tesco use highly trained SIA licensed security guards and they are trained NOT to act in the manner you have described. Are you absolutely sure she was a security guard?

Bloodymary · 18/11/2010 15:47

YADNBU Please report the stupid bint.

saffy85 · 18/11/2010 15:48

Definately complain! Wtf was she thinking? She could have not only hurt the thief but any number of innocent bystanders, not to mention her collegues. She is in the wrong job!

redflag · 18/11/2010 15:48

Scurryfunge, all i can think is she was getting her rocks off. We were lucky because if one of the people had have not been holding him, pretty sure he would have been able to chuck one of the fellas no problem!

And guess where they would have landed, on my children!

Yes she is a security staff member, i am in the tescos every other day! its all on camera.

I already complained to the teascos store manager, but thats obviously not the security staffs boss! he will be getting a piece of my mind too.

I think you should speak to the police. That was assault.

emptyshell · 19/11/2010 08:01

Oh FFS... you know - my husband's 6 foot 7 - doesn't make someone the incredibly hulk. He wouldn't have been able to "chuck one of the fellas"

Quit being so bloody heightist and exaggerating and tell the incident properly.

MoonUnitAlpha · 19/11/2010 08:04

"This is veru unusual. Im sure Tesco use highly trained SIA licensed security guards and they are trained NOT to act in the manner you have described. Are you absolutely sure she was a security guard?"

Highly trained after what - a 3 day course?

And don't you remember the security guard on trial recently for strangling a shoplifter to death? A SIA license doesn't mean you're not a nutjob.

redflag · 19/11/2010 10:19

Excuse me my husband is 6ft5 and he could easily chuck one of the fellas who were holding the guy! I have told the incident properly, Were you there? he manage when she did that to struggle to the point as he nearly got away!

How about you get a life and stop being a fuckwit!

Shock

well this thread has taken an unexpected turn hasn't it??

bit uncalled for empty shell

he was tall and the security guard's actions made him put up a fight, I would say the OP assumed correctly that it could have been dangerous if he wasn't being restrained.

If she'd have said 'there was a very tall man minding his own business and I sheltered my children from him - he looked so menacingly tall' - then yes she would have been 'heightist'

Hmm
coraltoes · 19/11/2010 10:47

heightist?!?!!? WTF!!! Biscuit

HowAnnoying · 19/11/2010 10:52

Was it your husband emptyshell??

IME people are generally heightist against short blokes not tall ones.

OP - complain to the police.

rpickett · 19/11/2010 12:12

YANBU the security company that tesco uses is T.S.S total securty services, absolute cowboys, I only know this as my DH used to work for them and left because of the companies incompatance to hire staff that know what they are doing.
Like someone else said people do a three day course and think they can do the job.

littleducks · 19/11/2010 12:18

I would be angry, there have been several incidents of people dying after security guards being too heavy handed

I would point out to tesco also that as mothers we point out security guards as 'safe' people that young children can approach for help if they get lost. Witnessing someone be that violent would prob make scare kids.

ginnybag · 19/11/2010 12:27

Okay, work in the Security field for a small SIA Approved Contractor company and I have to say, just because the guard is licensed doesn't mean they're any good!

The licensing requirements have recently been changed to include physical restraint techniques but anyone who already has a badge has no training in this regard.

Definitely complain to the police - and to the SIA. The SIA will investigate the incident and will be very harsh on TSS (who are shit, btw...)They can even yank TSS's ACS status (if they have it) which will probably see them lose the Tesco contract, so that'll motivate them to shift their behinds.

Then, come back on here and tell me if you're in the North West - because then I can send my lovely Sales Rep to tender for the work with your post and get you some decent guards!! Grin

WeeScotsLass · 19/11/2010 12:44

That's disgraceful. I would like to see the response you get from Tesco. I'm sure security work is in the main boring, repetitive and certainly poorly paid. A highlight in a boring week for the woman. But that's no excuse to behave like that. Dismissal should be inevitable in this circumstance

Peculiarjulia · 19/11/2010 13:17

Good on you for complaining about her. Too often people see incidents like this happen & say nothing. You should definitely follow it up next time you are in the store, although I would hope that the store manager was under a responsibility to forward your complaint on to her superior. I work in criminal defence & a lot of our cases that should be straightforward theft/shoplifting are aggravated & become public order or assault charges because of the actions or attitudes of heavy handed security staff.

AngryBeaver · 19/11/2010 13:34

heightist?don't be a knob!!

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 19/11/2010 13:37

heightist

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 19/11/2010 13:38

By the way empty it was the being hit that made the man angry not the fact he was 6 foot 7 ! Duh!

redflag · 19/11/2010 15:35

Right made my complaint, a lovely lady too my details even though she was looking at me very impressed by the fact i had complained!

I explained i shouldnt have to fear my children are going to witness violence if someone shop lifts on her watch again.

I also explained it was gross misconduct, illegal and if i am not happy with the response i will be contacting the police!

Felt like a right tit, the guard who i initially approached was dismissive and arrogant too.

Really makes you wonder what douchebags they actually hire.

How hilarious i am labeled "hightest" when my hubby is 6ft5 hilarious!
