To phone in sick, even though I'm not ?

Hi, I work nights in a home for young people with learning disabilities. I've been there for 8 months and have never phoned in sick before. It's my 30th birthday on a saturday, and they have put me down to work the friday night. There is only one other night worker and she won't want to swap with me as she's not keen on working friday nights anyway.

I'm going to be quite buisy on the saturday, so won't get much sleep then I'll be really tired for my party.

I know it might look a bit obvious, as I've requested that sat night off and they know it's my birthday. Is there anything I could say that would seem genuine? If I ask and they say no, that's it but If I'm ill, they have to give me the night off.

By the way, I don't get paid if I'm sick!

Why is your birthday important enough to have a weekend worth of celebrations? Go to work, you don't have to celebrate on the day

Thank you. Smile

It's dishonest and fraudulent to phone in sick when you aren't. If I did that my clients would have to be seen by other people on top of their normal work. And I've done agency care work and seen how vulnerable people get upset when they're confronted by total strangers.

Do people often pose questions on here and throw their toys out of the pram when people answer them?

oh i do love SM Grin

i see OP is acting her age and responding maturely to sensible suggestions not to fake a sickie.

Grin Go on OP, pull a sickie ...I dare you, but come back and tell everybody you did it..I double dare you !
musicmadness · 18/11/2010 00:37

Meh. I know you've already said you wouldn't, but good decision! Don't really care about the moral side of it, just the fact that it would be completely obvious to anyone with half a brain what you had done.
Next time plan a bit better (and leave the sick day until a party you haven't been talking about comes along Wink)
