To phone in sick, even though I'm not ?

Hi, I work nights in a home for young people with learning disabilities. I've been there for 8 months and have never phoned in sick before. It's my 30th birthday on a saturday, and they have put me down to work the friday night. There is only one other night worker and she won't want to swap with me as she's not keen on working friday nights anyway.

I'm going to be quite buisy on the saturday, so won't get much sleep then I'll be really tired for my party.

I know it might look a bit obvious, as I've requested that sat night off and they know it's my birthday. Is there anything I could say that would seem genuine? If I ask and they say no, that's it but If I'm ill, they have to give me the night off.

By the way, I don't get paid if I'm sick!

hi mcp Grin

I am glad, MML (not that you have to please me, I know I am a boring old fart)

genuine sickness..never be a martyr and go in (that bugs me too Smile

but best to keep that moral high ground I think...who cares what everyone else does, they are lazy bludgers and you are not

tiredemma · 17/11/2010 20:11

If you want people to agree with you, its probably best not to put your thread under AIBU. You dont seem to like our responses too much.

Next year, book annual leave as soon as possible.

NetworkGuy · 17/11/2010 20:12

Well, do hve a great party. Shame that AIBU gets so many nasty comments - yes, YABU, but the tone of some posts is pretty awful, and people could tone down their outrage a few degrees, and just say no.

FWIW, I agree it would do you no good to phone in sick, and they would see through it in a millisecond, but also have to say the comments here are a bit OTT.

pastyeater · 17/11/2010 20:12

YABU. If you choose to work with such vulnerable people then be reliable.

tiredemma · 17/11/2010 20:13

Do you have to stay awake all night? (do you get a break?)

AnyFucker · 17/11/2010 20:13

someone's idea of pleading a last minute secret table booking is good, with a legitimate plead to swap shift/have annual leave

try that

AnyFucker · 17/11/2010 20:17

NWG...if you worked in a similar sector or the NHS, for example, you too would get a bit angry with people taking the piss with fake sickness

it goes on all the time and costs taxpayers millions every year

in addition to that, the other decent workers have to either do shifts at the last minute, shoulder more work (when already overworked) or bank staff (at a higher rate of pay) are drafted in

because of the selfishness of one person...not good really is it ?

not forgetting of course, that vulnerable patients may be getting looked after by people who don't know them well

mummyloveslucy · 17/11/2010 20:20

Well thanks NetworkGuy. I won't bother going on AIBU again. It seems to attract people who need to vent their anger.

I do have a bit of a cold anyway, does that count? No forget it. I know you'll all say NO Angry - That face if you lot, not me.

OP posts:
AnyFucker · 17/11/2010 20:21

I am not venting my anger, I am answering the question that you asked

OP posts:
scottishmummy · 17/11/2010 20:24

thing is with wee bit planning this was avoidable, you could have made a legit request.problem sorted

agedknees · 17/11/2010 20:24

Anyfucker - I work bank shifts for the NHS and get paid less then my contracted hours (also in the NHS).

mummyloveslucy · 17/11/2010 20:25

Well at least I'm young at heart unlike most of you old haggs!!

OP posts:
AnyFucker · 17/11/2010 20:27

"giving it loads"

and you are still here getting arsey and trying to defend the indefensible when people won't play along with you

AnyFucker · 17/11/2010 20:27

< true colours >

scottishmummy · 17/11/2010 20:28

you are daft slagging off posters who dont kiss your arse

well perhaps if you had adequately planned you wouldn't be considering a sickie

but hey saying you is aw haggs to respondents is sure fire way to change folks mind

tiredemma · 17/11/2010 20:29

whats being'young at heart' got to do with skiving work???

im 32. so what?

Mumcentreplus · 17/11/2010 20:31

lmaoo Oh dear the insults are flying!!...the thing is a sickie is not the worst you can do at work imo..what i hate is lazy people who pretend to work..yes they turn up every single friggin day and do fuck all or just enough to get by..also the people who come in at deaths door and pass their lurgies to all and sundry via the air con..fuck off! go home and come back when you are not contagious ffs...

scottishmummy · 17/11/2010 20:32

well calling folks haggs wont ingratiate op will it

did you forget it was your birthday or summat

AnyFucker · 17/11/2010 20:33

I am insulting the behaviour, not the person

can Op say the same ?

mummyloveslucy · 17/11/2010 20:33

I said I'd changed my mind after about 4 posts. That was that! I don't know why people are still posting saying how unreasonable it is and being so bitchy? I'm not doing it, end of.

I'm off now anyway, so you can all bitch away to each other if you lke. I'm not even going to read the posts.

OP posts:
Ormirian · 17/11/2010 20:34

No. Don't. Why would anyone tell you that was a good thing to do? Confused

AnyFucker · 17/11/2010 20:34

Bye then.

Have a nice birthday Smile

Ormirian · 17/11/2010 20:35

Oh dear.

I see it's been said already. With predictable results.
