To think colleague over-reacted a little?

We were talking about Strictly and she said she really wants Kara to win now as she's just heard that Kara is dyslexic.
I asked, quite innocently, 'Does that make a difference for her?'
She stood up and pointed her finger at me and said in a quite tense voice 'She has problems telling her right from her left and so puts in extra hours of training. THAT's the kind of difference it makes to her iklboo! She's disabled'.
AIBU to think she's being a little bit over-sensitive because:
a) Kara whatserface wouldn't know my colleague if she stood up in her soup
b) Colleague doesn't know anyone with dyslexia (she stated as much). I do - DH is dyslexic.

It's not the first time she's worshipped at the altar of celebrity and given one of us an earful for not agreeing with her Hmm

wow - that's quite an over-reaction!

Iklboo · 15/11/2010 13:34

I thought so. There was much exchanging of glances between the rest of the team.

Tell her to stick her face back into Heat and STFU whilst you get on with real life.

BuntyPenfold · 15/11/2010 13:40

I am not good at right and left either.

No one cares, which is what I expect:)

ShatnersBassoon · 15/11/2010 13:40

She sounds unhinged.

Sarsaparilllla · 15/11/2010 13:41

That's a total overreaction!!

One of my best friends is dyslexic - I think she's actually be very offended to be labled disabled by a total stranger

nickelpombear · 15/11/2010 13:42

Does she know that left and right are specifically a problem?
I didn't realise that dyslexia included that.

YANBU, though - dancing surely isn't affected by dyslexia?
and she is being hyper-sensitive.

KurriKurri · 15/11/2010 13:50

My (grown up) DS has dyslexia, have just been on the phone to him and told him about this.

He wanted to tell your colleague that actually dyslexia is an advantage for Kara because 'We dyslexics have natural rhythm'. Wink

TrillianAstra · 15/11/2010 13:59

Recommend Jilly Cooper to her - in JC-land anyone who is dyslexic is a beautiful angel incapable of malice.

Aviendha · 15/11/2010 14:03

ooo i have dyslexia,

Iklboo · 15/11/2010 14:44

DH is dyslexic. He occasionally has problems with left & right (usually when he's tired). He's a driving instructor so I could see it being more of a problem for him than for Kara's cha-cha-cha to be honest.

overreaction, but don't give it another thought. Just ignore it.

MintyMoo · 15/11/2010 15:36

I have dyspraxia, no idea which is left and which is right. I have to put a marker (ring) on my right hand to be able to tell. Dyslexia and Dyspraxia can overlap - if Kara does have co-ordination difficulties then she will be needing to train extra hard to be fair. My co-ordination is so bad I can't drive and struggle to negotiate stairs. I'd quite like her to win because Artem is a hunk because, to someone like me she's an inspiration :o

Your colleague does sound a bit odd though!

Rocklover · 15/11/2010 15:56

What about Felicity Kendall, didn't her partner stuff an apple and banana in her legwarmers to help her remember left and right? I don't think she's dysliexic.

Rocklover · 15/11/2010 15:56

Bloody hell, I can't even speall dyslexic!!

Rocklover · 15/11/2010 15:57

Or spell!!!! Godammit!!!!! Epic fail.

AMumInScotland · 15/11/2010 16:08

Sounds like some celebrity magazine has told her she ought to be aware of this terrible problem, and she'll spout about it until next month's magazine tells her what she ought to be "concerned" about now. Which will be some other micro-celebrity having a sex addiction, or "heavy leg syndrome", or having overcome some dreadful disadvantage in early life, like their puppy dying in a tragic accident.

Thos who live by the contents of Heat/OK/Hello etc will always have a source of meaningless sob stories about celerities.

Charleney · 15/11/2010 19:21

"a) Kara whatserface wouldn't know my colleague if she stood up in her soup"

Hahahaha thats the best thing ive heard in a long time! lol

Rebeccash · 15/11/2010 19:23

She is a nutjob bit strange

muggglewump · 15/11/2010 19:26

Oh what a twat. If she were my colleague and I heard that, I'd be bloody pissed off. I'm dyslexic too.

LoudRowdyDuck · 15/11/2010 19:33

Skeleton, may I say, it does make me grin a bit when people give that tip about the L-shape ... because one of the other common traits that goes with not knowing right from left is reversing letters!

I feel it's the same cruel sense of humour that decided people who struggle to spell need a word like 'dyslexia'. Grin

I am going to adopt "if she stood up in her soup" as a new favourite phrase.
