to have complained about this child's top?

I was in Peacocks yesterday - I know, living the high life! Our nearest town is a bit limited for kids clothing and wanted to get my son some long sleeved tops.

I saw this boys top hanging up and it stopped me in my tracks.

Now, given that this top is for boys aged 1-6 I don't imagine the joke could be aimed at fellow 6 and unders, as they wouldn't get the joke, so surely must be aimed at older children and adults. Which is why I found it made me really uncomfortable. The lady in the shop said she agreed with me, but a friend thought I was being over the top.

So am I being precious or is it really bad taste?

No, but I believe they have a wedsite.

donnie · 13/11/2010 18:47

I don't find it offensive but I agree it is ridiculous and naff in the extreme.

Lotster · 13/11/2010 18:48

Well then, I'm obviously being U!

Odd though that the two members of staff thought the same and that it was awful. Still, they probably haven't had AIBU training!

Thanks all.

Unfit - I'll Gooble them now.

Don't eat them all, leave some for me!

Lotster · 13/11/2010 18:52

heh

I don't see your problem - it's says 'I see you looking at me, I'm cute, I know I'm cute - I know you think I'm cute' that's all. End of.

I would let my teenage daughter wear it if she wanted to, why not?

This is what it translates to an a teenage girl...

I can see you looking at me
I'm not stupid
Yes I'm cute - but you haven't got a chance!

I'd rather have the one 'in question' than the one you bought. No contest.

ChippingIn · 13/11/2010 18:55

an on

Vallhala · 13/11/2010 18:59

Good grief, if that's all you can find to be offended about you're a lucky woman!

Where's the problem?

And yes, I would be happy for my teenaged daughters to wear it. In fact, my extremely vain, bless her blonde, pretty 15 yo teenaged daughter would love it.

Lotster · 13/11/2010 19:00

"I'd rather have the one 'in question' than the one you bought. No contest."

Not not sure why putting down the top I bought was necessary?

OP posts:
Lotster · 13/11/2010 19:05

Hiya Val, long time no see, not been on a pooch thread for a while.

I've already stated what I thought was the problem, but obviously it isn't a shared view. That's fine.

Even if I hadn't have mentioned it, I think the woman in the shop would have complained to the company about it anyway, she was composing an email about a couple of items she felt were inappropriate before I went in.

When I was 18 I wore a shirt which said "I know you adore me, but darling you can never afford me" and another one which said "We are all prostitutes, but some of us wear our high heels better than others"

I thought I was WELL cool.

If my DD wanted to wear the Peacock t-shirt I wouldn't bat an eyelid compared to some of the slogans out there.

booyhoo · 13/11/2010 19:14

"Not not sure why putting down the top I bought was necessary?"

so you can slag off a top lots of others say they would be happy to buy for their children but no-one can have an opinion on your choice?

this is AIBU, open season for all to judge.

Lotster · 13/11/2010 19:23

Hi booyhoo, I think you're being a bit overly confrontational there, the top I had bought was I top I own. But AFAIK no-one on here has the other top, so my comments weren't personal?

And I also wasn't slagging it off in a nasty way, I said it made me uncomfortable.

God I forgot how asking nicely for other mums opinions rapidly descends in to bitchyness here on AIBU. Should know better really after all these years... ho hum.

DS has a yellow t-shirt from George that says 'R U talking (lips and an ing) 2 me?' and the other one (blue)says 'I'm not trying to be difficult I'm good at it'.

Grin

I have no problem with them but I understand why some people are bothered.

Lotster · 13/11/2010 19:31

Hi Mumbar, I wouldn't find those messages strange at all. Nothing loaded in them.

The Peacocks one was one aimed at a voyeur so I felt differently about it.

Got to get the kids to bed now, thanks all.

Gosh I think you need to grow a slightly thicker skin, OP. This thread is not bitchy! It's people having a debate and giving their opinions, after being asked for it!

ChippingIn · 13/11/2010 19:34

'The Peacocks one was aimed at a voyeur'

Strange how it's only you who thinks that....

booyhoo · 13/11/2010 19:34

Hi lotster, I'm not being confrontational at all. i was asking if you were being a hypocrite. you said you thought the top was really bad taste. another poster said tehu preferred that top over the one you chose. they didn't put your choice down. they gave their opinion. whereas you were putting this top down. that is all.

ChippingIn · 13/11/2010 19:35

As Booyhoo said - why shouldn't I comment on the one you choose - you are commenting on ones with slogans and that one, one I would happily buy - it's no different.

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 13/11/2010 19:35

read the thread and am totally Confused as to what the problem is......

Mind DS1 was given a T-shirt recently that says

"I'm very big and I'm very clever" (he's 10) which he loves to bits.........so I'm not really too bothered by slogans.......

Lotster · 13/11/2010 19:36

x-post

I think people calling me "perverted", "warped" etc was quite unkind, and bitchy TBH.

I tend to stick to the asked for opinion myself, without hiding behind anonymity to stick the boot in.

Perhaps I do need a thicker skin, but then I'm glad not too, otherwise I might go round offending people in the same way.

And now I must get those kids to bed.

Tee2072 · 13/11/2010 19:37

Aimed at a voyeur?!?! So anyone who even looks at your child is a voyeur?

Wow.

ChippingIn · 13/11/2010 19:38

Baroque - I like it :)

Most of the rest of us can't see the problem either and even the people who don't like slogan tops etc can't actually see the problem with this one, however, the OP seems to think it's going to bring all the perverts and voyeurs out and put kids in danger....[where's my eye rolling emoticon MNHQ????)
