to think giving money to animal charities is wrong?

ok so i just want people to know that i do like animals - im not a pet hater!

however today, whilst out shoping, i was approached by someone working for an animal charity. he was asking me if i could set up a monthly direct debit to help them. i politely declined, as i already give directly to 3 different charities and made my way home.

this has been playing on my mind all day. if everyone who gave money to animal charities instead gave it to charities helping sick/vulnerable people/children, then surely alot more aid would be available. i mean i do like animals but think human quality of life should come first.

Yes mamottat,
I would have to choose between which children I gave to. But my money is going to humans whichever way you look at it.

Like I said, people are free to give their money to anyone they want - their money, their choice.

gremlindolphin · 12/11/2010 22:35

what about dh or dog in a housefire - now there is a decision!!!

taintedpaint · 12/11/2010 22:36

I'm surprised and horrified anyone agrees with the OP. I really hope I don't know any of you people in RL. On a very basic level, who we give our money to is our own business. And who gives anyone else the right to dictate that?

tiredlady, your first post was more offensive in its wording than the OP.

EmmalinaC · 12/11/2010 22:36

YABU and I agree with what redheels said on the last page.

BUT the marketing messages that animal charities send out are much more hard hitting than those of human charities. It's ok to show a dog/donkey/bear/monkey that has been beaten and abused but it's not ok to show a real child. We would find it too upsetting. And the consequence of this is that it's easier for animal charities to pull on the heartstrings of the unsuspecting.

' It's ok to show a dog/donkey/bear/monkey that has been beaten and abused but it's not ok to show a real child'

I'd imagine that confidentiality and the right to privacy has as much to do with this as anything.

They certainly show starving children on tv however.

Vallhala · 12/11/2010 22:38

I'm with Spikey, both in opinions and actions. Before I leave this thread though, I say again, scroll down to the photos the the BOTTOM of this page and then tell me it's "wrong" to donate to animal charities.

taintedpaint · 12/11/2010 22:39

I would also hide the thread, like spikeycow, but I'm sticking around so I know whose threads to avoid in the future. I have no desire, after this, to converse with anyone whose attitude is similar to the OP. Disgusting.

OP

YANBU

I shall join in the hills as the 'animals are better than humans and humans do terrible things gang will be out for our blood!'

at least they won't eat us! Grin

Persoanlly I would never give money to animal charities in favour of humanitarian ones.

thequimreaper · 12/11/2010 22:40

Well hopeforthebest I hope you'd be going for one of them ahead of the goldfish!
The point I'm making is that no-one can donate to all charities so you have to choose and animal charities shouldn't be top priority with all the human suffering going on.
I'm an animal lover but I value people more. If I saw 2 charity collectors and one was RSPCA and the other was Shelter/Oxfam/Womens Aid and I only had one pound it would be going in box of the charity that helps people.

tiredlady · 12/11/2010 22:40

Good grief spikycow,
Please don't call people who prioritise humans over children, shit and uncivilised.
What a ridiculous over reaction.

Of course I don't condone animal cruelty. I just think that when children are being neglected, abused and dying of preventable diseases then they should be the recipients of any extra cash I have.

If you feel that dogs and cats are more deserving of your money, then fine.

No need to get personal

LetThereBeRock · 12/11/2010 22:41

I suspect Vallhalla's money would also go in the Shelter/Oxfam's/Women's Aid tin, before the RSPCA tin.

backwardpossom · 12/11/2010 22:42

People are c*nts

Long live animals!

(I may or may not have had too much wine)

tiredlady · 12/11/2010 22:43

Of course that should have read as "humans over animals"

gremlindolphin · 12/11/2010 22:44

mmm that really adds to the thread.

Meow75 · 12/11/2010 22:44

Tiredlady said "I don't really give a shit about poorly treated donkeys in India or wherever, when women are still dying in childbirth and babies are dying of diarrhoea."

And similarly, I don't agree with holding up populations of human beings where population control is unheard of or frowned upon.

There will NEVER be consensus on this thread, and because the charities chosen tend to be close to the donor's heart, it is very emotive.

thequimreaper · 12/11/2010 22:46

Meow so you think that babies and mothers should be allowed to die in third world countries to control the population???? I hope I've read that wrong Shock

tiredlady · 12/11/2010 22:48

Meow,

What did you mean?

backwardpossom · 12/11/2010 22:48

Oh lighten up gremlin Grin

gremlindolphin · 12/11/2010 22:49

I haven't had enough wine!

eachpeach80 · 12/11/2010 22:50

meow75 I too hope that you did not mean to say what you did.

backwardpossom · 12/11/2010 22:50

Think I have...

bed!

thequimreaper · 12/11/2010 22:52

HopeForTheBest everyone values people more than animals. Of course no-one wants animals to suffer but if you had to choose...obviously this is hypothetical because we are fortunate enough to live in a country where people don't have to make that choice but if you could only afford to feed your dog or your child I'm sure you would feed your child.
