to think giving money to animal charities is wrong?

ok so i just want people to know that i do like animals - im not a pet hater!

however today, whilst out shoping, i was approached by someone working for an animal charity. he was asking me if i could set up a monthly direct debit to help them. i politely declined, as i already give directly to 3 different charities and made my way home.

this has been playing on my mind all day. if everyone who gave money to animal charities instead gave it to charities helping sick/vulnerable people/children, then surely alot more aid would be available. i mean i do like animals but think human quality of life should come first.

AIBU?

YABVU

I hate that people think they can tell you where your donations should go. I have a mind of my own thank you very much.

If you feel so badly give more of YOUR money to the causes you think should get more support, don't tell others that donating as they want is wrong.

If all those who say they really CARE for animals were to stop EATING them they would save money and lives.

Greatgoose, been doing that for over 30 years and my teenaged DD have done so all their lives.

spikeycow · 12/11/2010 22:23

Yuck

thefirstMrsDeVere · 12/11/2010 22:24

Its a personal choice.

I only give to child cancer charities now (on a regular basis, will drop money into most collection tins) but only because its the most important thing in the world to me

So I am really glad other people give money to animal charities.

I know of people who refuse to give money to cancer charities because of animal testing, some people dont give money to charities with any sort of religious connection, some will only give to very local organisations.

We all have our own preferences and thank God for that. Othewise the whole charitiable sector would fall apart and there is NO WAY the public sector could cover the work they do.

MaMoTTaT · 12/11/2010 22:24

oh god is this now turning into a "if you're not a vegetarian you can't possibly really care about animals"???????

Vallhala · 12/11/2010 22:24

Evening Spikey!

Yuck as in "The OP is talking bollocks!", I presume? :o

LetThereBeRock · 12/11/2010 22:25

Again,Greatgoose. Each to their own.

I'll prioritise the animal welfare issues that are important to me.

Eating meat isn't one of them. I eat meat, yet can still take an interest in animal welfare.

echt · 12/11/2010 22:26

YABU- it's up to the individual. I only give to charities for elderly humans.

gremlindolphin · 12/11/2010 22:26

we would all stop caring if we started thinking well I can't give to that charity because something else awful is happening elsewhere.

tiredlady The women dying in childbirth still have husbands, other children and relatives who will suffer if their donkey is not looked after properly and can't work.

spikeycow · 12/11/2010 22:27

Hell yes! I'm not going to bother myself to debate with it, yuck sums it up nicely

armani · 12/11/2010 22:27

thanks for that vallhella

'If all those who say they really CARE for animals were to stop EATING them they would save money and lives.'

It would save a huge amount of money-they would become extinct! Our countryside would change and it would be very sad.

I don't choose to give to animals but everyone is free to make up their own mind so YABU.

ChippingIn · 12/11/2010 22:28

Keep running.... please. I, for one, have no interest in anything else you have to say.

tiredlady · 12/11/2010 22:28

Hopeforthe best,

Actually I agree with you to a certain degree. I can feel compassion for a cruelly treated animal. Compassion is free. However when it comes to money I don't beleive that donkeys and children are equally worthy, therefore children will always get my money.

LetThereBeRock · 12/11/2010 22:29

And if we're playing the 'Who's worthiest' game, do we then pit cancer patients against children with disabilities? Disaster victims against the homeless?

MaMoTTaT · 12/11/2010 22:30

but then tiredlady - you have to choose which children are worthy of your money........

thequimreaper · 12/11/2010 22:30

YANBU.
Even if you love animals - who would you pull out of a housefire your dog or your child? People only have limited resources and to donate to an animal charity ahead of one that helps people/kids I think is getting your priorities all wrong. All problems can't be solved with money but a lot can.

ApocalypseCheese · 12/11/2010 22:32

Probably, and it's sod all to do with you what people do with their money

LetThereBeRock · 12/11/2010 22:33

Donate to the charities you like, and sod off and leave the rest of us to do the same.

If I want to donate to the 'Buy a designer handbag for a chimpanzee'fund that's my choice.

AfternoonsandCoffeespoons · 12/11/2010 22:33

I can't quite get my head round this! So you believe there are charity's more worthwhile? That is totally up to you and your opinion. But to believe giving to any charity is wrong?? I don't get it.

I'm hiding this thread. People are abusing animals in vile ways everyday and I'm not sharing a thread with the don't give a shit brigade. Don't you understand that if you don't care about animal abuse you are basically shit? And uncivilised? HTH
