I was just flicking through tomorrow's front pages and the headlines talk about Muslims burning the Poppy today. This has made me really very angry. AIBU or is this just freedom of speech and I need to be tougher?

My Grandfather spent yars in the trenches in WW1, was on firewatch night after night in WW2 doubtless frantic about his oldest child who had run off to join the Marines despite being under age. He was also a Methodist lat preacher.

Fro the hours I spent in conversation with him I feel he would be alongside Riven, SGB et al on this thread (minus the swearing) be disappointed if he thought his contribution led to bitter, point scoring generalisations against allmembers of another faith because of the silly attention-seeking actions of a very few.

There are plenty of people who buy white poppies, see REmebrance day as uncomfortably close to glorifying war, some who d in fact use it to glorify war. To live in a country where it was made illegal to burn a crepe paper and plastic reprepsentation of a comon roadside flower (whatever it's symbol for those who value it as such) would be an anathema.

Is that what people want? Imprisonment for burning a certain object?

Dissent an offence is necessary and really rather healthy in a complex diverse society.

Stewie I read your post and you make some valid points. I think alot of it is tribal. Islam in the Balkans occurred due to the Ottoman Empire dominating those countries before the Hapsburg one. I did read 'birds without wings' by Louis de Berniere about the different relgions living in Asia Minor before the great war.

I am sure there are difficulties on both sides in various Middle Eastern countries but I still feel Islam is an intolerant religion and again i can't remember but i think the the translation of peace can be substituted by submission in the Koran.

And yes i agree that the church has been appalling over the centuries and the IRA were so called christians but we are now in 2010 and i think Islam has a mediavel mentality.

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 13/11/2010 22:36

Islam isn't intolerent. The people who are using is as a tool of social control are.

Well.in lots of countries to 'insult' their culture IS a crime.
Not here however.
That doesn't mean it's ok to insult our culture.
I don't think the inquisition happened in England.
Bad things happened in all the European Nations
Bad thing also happened and are still happening in other countries.

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 14/11/2010 17:59

I dunno if we had tje inquisition as such, but we killed a fuck load if protestants, Catholics and Jews (always with the Jews!) Depending in who was in charge at the time. Also, quite a lot of Muslims, but we tended to save that for our holidays.

Sorry Coalition but what has that got to do with these nutters burning poppies?
I personally believe in not giving a handful of morons the publicity they desperately seek. It was such a pathetic gesture

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 14/11/2010 18:13

Nothing, I was responding to moraldefective.

MoralDefective · 14/11/2010 18:19

But everybody has killed a load of everybody,.....
When does it end.?

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 14/11/2010 18:28

As soon as we stop treating thongs like religion, nationality, and race as if they were real.

mrsruffallo · 14/11/2010 18:34

Oh, thongs are real, trust me Grin

CoteDAzur · 14/11/2010 18:46

alemci - re " i think the the translation of peace can be substituted by submission in the Koran"

I doubt that very much, given that the word for "submission" is...

ISLAM.

Don't quite get your point 'TheCoalition'
