I have just composed a rant on the page of a family member (distant-thank goodness) who has pasted a status all about muslims not observing rememberance day - burning a poppy etc etc - clearly rubbish. Shock

I am going to post it, even though it is likely to be seen by multiple family members (some of whom have "liked" it), and cause a massive family row probably?

AIBU to hope me pointing out how unlikely it is to be true etc is going to make any difference to their tiny minds?

Feel a bit shaky with anger Angry

What exactly did they write and what did you write?

thighsmadeofcheddar · 11/11/2010 20:47

I probably wouldn't post it to be honest. As much as people like this infuriate me.
I would however, delete them from my friends list.

giantpurplepeopleeater · 11/11/2010 20:48

But I have seen a news report of a group in London who did burn a large poppy in protest...

KenDoddsDadsDog · 11/11/2010 20:48

Oh a few of my friends have posted the same with tonnes of racist comments from their friends afterwards. Usual Facebook shite. Step away from the comment button!

giantpurplepeopleeater · 11/11/2010 20:50

Sorry - x-post with Ken. So it's not that you think the status is untrue (the protest) but that it is vile and racist?

If so, I would try not to get infuriated by it, and respond with something dignified, or just delete them from your account

MsKalo · 11/11/2010 20:52

Why do you think this story is untrue? Racism is wrong but to be upset about Muslims ranting on remembrance day and posting about it is ok surely? Have we become so pc we cannot be cross about this kind of disrespect? To rant back with racism is wrong but to be angry about them doing it is ok!

lollypoplady · 11/11/2010 20:53

I saw an article about a protest where muslims burnt a poppy in the news today too, are you annoyed because she was angry about the protesters doing this?

FessaEst · 11/11/2010 20:53

giant purple have you? Seriously?? Have you a link? Was/Am v v sure it wasn't true.

Thank you thighs and ken - I needed talking down. lolly haven't pressed "post" yet, did think twice and came looking for advice!

lolly - here is a couple of them (have removed some of the more offensive bits):

"today we saw Muslims break the two minute silence in central london, with banners holding "British Soldiers Burn In Hell" & the burning of a poppy... if you don't like us English people paying respect for our brave fighters, then you know where the airport is. disgusting, disrespectful bs!"

OP posts:
NotShortImFunSized · 11/11/2010 20:54

But they did didn't they Hmm

FessaEst · 11/11/2010 20:56

No, I did think it wasn't true, but I stand corrected.

I am genuinely shocked and disappointed that that happened, obviously feel that is disrespectful and unacceptable and do not defend those actions at all.

However, I find the torrent of racist stereotypes/abuse etc that goes hand in hand with these statuses utterly depressing.

OP posts:
PocketMouse · 11/11/2010 20:56

there's another thread on this somewhere [looks]

InGodWeTrust · 11/11/2010 20:58

fessa we must both have that friend-because I commented on that status...

I then changed my status to;

GOSH! I wish people would learn something about culture. RACE, RELIGION & NATIONALITY are all different things. Being a Muslim doesn't make you a foreigner any more than being white makes you a Christian or Australian for that matter. I'm sick of hearing "us verse them". SHEER ignorance. Get a bloody geography lesson. Rant over.

It's ridiculous. You can't prove they're muslims JUST because they're not white. Eurgh ignorance.

PocketMouse · 11/11/2010 20:58

I can't find the thread, but here's the story it linked to:

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1328703/Remembrance-Day-Poppy-burning-Muslim-protesters-mar-Armistice-Day.html

lollypoplady · 11/11/2010 20:58

Ummm, well I think these particular men are disgusting disrespctful bastards. I don't think that makes me a racist, I would think the same regardless of who did it, it has nothing whatsoever to do with them being muslim.

PocketMouse · 11/11/2010 20:59

in case that doesn't work

giantpurplepeopleeater · 11/11/2010 20:59

Am cr@p so can't do links - but saw it in the daily mail

hides Blush at admitting at looking at their website - I do it for work!

FessaEst · 11/11/2010 20:59

Actually, am just utterly depressed all round; that it happened, that people would do that, that these stauses only have to be up for seconds before people pile in with total offensive rubbish, that there is such intolerance on all fronts...gah! My naivety has been shattered.

OP posts:
gobbledegoop · 11/11/2010 21:04

well said lollypop.
I don't think it is being racist to be completely disgusted with this type of behaviour ffs!

FessaEst · 11/11/2010 21:04

Don't be Blush giant, I am Blush & Sad for being so certain it couldn't have happened.

Thanks for the link pocket.

ingod indeed, it was the whole airport thing ie that if you are muslim you are not english. I feel so much for good friends of mine who are absolutely british, but devout muslims. To know people jusge you purely on your religion and with such vehemance must be very scary.

lolly I would agree with you. These people are indefensible, but for their actions not anything else.

OP posts:
ABitBatty · 11/11/2010 21:10

I read today on Twitter about some EDL members throwing pork at a Muslim group in Kensington today Shock during the service. That's disgusting.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 11/11/2010 21:12

It's not being racist to be disgusted with the behaviour. But sadly it seems to have prompted friends of my friends to go on a racist rant. Sending people home, setting them on fire and every cliche in the book.

Oh batty - I despair. I sometimes think I live in a bit of a bubble and just assume we all want to get along. A bit ignorant of me in my own way I guess.

ken - I completely agree. Have just deleted another friend as his status/associated comments are so awful I wouldn't want to copy/paste them here for discussion.

Sad at this news: I didn't know. It's awful and shocking and sad. At the risk of sounding like my Mum: 'I don't know what the world's coming to'.
What's so funny about peace, love and understanding, (to coin a phrase)that's what I'd like to know.
