to wonder why people care what they look like on the school run?

Just what it says really. I have gleaned from other forums that some do care very much. I would make an effort dressing for work, or a night out - but beyond being clean could truly not give a toss what I look like at pick up time.
So why? Who are you dressing up for? Not a judgement - just genuine bemusement...

agree with those who have said they dress for their day which includes the school run.

i put on nice and i believe "fashionable" clothes (though not particularly expensive). hair looks halfway decent and wear at least a bit of lippy as i'd look pathetically pale otherwise, but i also wear it because it makes me feel good.

i looked good when i was going to work, i don't see why that should be any different just because i'm a SAHM.

pagwatch is right. If you notice you do really care.

I do not care, I'm clean but I'm not interested in labels, what's in/out of fashion and I take no notice of what any else is wearing.

piscesmoon · 11/11/2010 22:07

I find it weird! The Sunday Times had a question from a reader who wanted to wow people with a scarf-one was suggested that cost over £100!!! It would have been wasted on me-I couldn't tell the difference between that and a £15. (It may have been even more)
Luckily I have just had other parents who wear their work clothes or whatever they were doing at the time-gardening etc. They must have too much time on their hands if they are remotely bothered!

perfumedlife · 11/11/2010 22:34

I never make an effort, all my basic weekday clothes are bleach stained. I shove any old stuff on and then put on my fabulous, Westwood coat and boots and Voila I look great. Easy Grin

MrsNonSmoker · 11/11/2010 23:37

I always like to feel I'm standing next to someone who has managed to achieve a full set of clothes plus underwear, perhaps knickers, maybe a bra. This is not the norm at my kids' school. Before it got cold one woman rocked up in a duck egg blue velour towelling bikini shorts and halter top set Grin To be fair, whenever I mention it, someone always asks me if I know where to get items in towelling (other than towels) so it must be all the rage ...

xDaniellex · 11/11/2010 23:55

Errr maybe because people are either going to work lol. Or maybe jut because they don't want to look like a tramp. What a strange thing to be bemused out Hmm

Joolyjoolyjoo · 12/11/2010 00:03

I am usually going straight from school bus drop off to walk dogs in the muddy woods in the pissing rain- high heels are a bitch in the swamplands. Sometimes I'm going to work, so wearing very dull uniform, hair scraped back, no make-up (I'm a vet, so operating)

Other mums look fab- I think good for them. I appreciate that not everyone needs to dress for mud/blood/shit/vomit. Sometimes I fantasise about a life that doesn't revolve around those substances, but it's just the way it is. The well turned out mums still chat to me, and I've never felt in any way looked down upon for my skagginess Smile

igetmorelovefromthecat · 12/11/2010 00:06

Ha, what I look like on the school run depends completely on how much time I have/what's clean/what mood I'm in/what else I am doing that day. One day I might turn up in my high viz jacket and rigger boots, the next day I might be dressed to the nines. But no I have specifically chosen my outfit for the school run, do people really do that?

I think the Burka could really come into its own for school run antics. Get up out of bed, chuck it over, job done.

onceamai · 12/11/2010 09:06

Finished the school runs, had a cup of tea. Taking coat and boots off in a minute to reveal a lovely Primark nightie. About to jump in the shower to get booted and suited for work and no-one is any the wiser.

Bathsheba · 12/11/2010 09:14

I don;'t dress for the school run, I dress for THE DAY.

I wear make up. I put that on in the morning when I get out of the shower.

I have styled hair. I style it in the morning when I get out of the shower.

I like wearing clothes that make me feel good. I put them on in the morning just after I come out of the shower.

I don't touch any of these things again throughout the day....however the first thing I do in the day is the school run, so I turn up on the school run in nice clothes, with my hair styled and make up on.

I've not got dressed for thes chool run - I've got dressed for a day in my life that has school runs in it.

TrillianAstra · 12/11/2010 09:33

In response to the OP - some people care what they look like all the time. There isn't always such a split between 'things to dress up for' and 'things not to bother for'.

FreakoidOrganisoid · 12/11/2010 11:22

Riven I very much doubt people are thinking you are a tramp, the only person I notice is pj/make up woman and only because it seems like such a contradiction.

deliciousdevilwoman · 12/11/2010 19:30

Absolutely what Trillian said.

Balletpink · 12/11/2010 19:59

I like looking (for want of a better word) polished, because looking like it makes me feel and act like it Smile. If I don't make the effort I feel slobby and undone all day and what I do feels slobby and undone too. Also, I feel I generate more respect if I am at least halfway presentable than if I am greasy-haired, crumpled and pasty-faced. Now if I were a natural beauty like say, Angelina, then no I probably wouldn't make as much effort. But I know for a fact I look better with better clothes on, hair done, makeup done, than not. Sadly.

Putting on makeup, putting hair in a nice bun and wearing some sort of decent clothes is second nature to me because I've done it so long, so I don't see it as making a particular effort.

I don't own a single pair of jeans (although I do have long-length leggings for tunics on more casual days) or a tracksuit or similar sports wear. Usually I wear a dress/skirt, and tights and say, little ankle boots.

I've also never actually been to the shops without a bit of makeup on at least because I put it on without fail, every morning so it's there no matter what I do in the day.

I don't look done up like an air hostess exactly Smile nor do I have anything approaching "designer" wear, nor do I wear 4" stilettos type boots, but I probably do look like someone who "dresses up" even though I'm just doing what I would do ordinarily anyway.

Balletpink · 12/11/2010 20:04

Oh and - I've got a LOT of time to not do all this when I'm old old old. Not when I'm still the right side of 40!!! It's not about impressing, it's about making the most of yourself and enjoying adding a little bit of glamour to an otherwise taxing, dreary, day. Because I'm worth it! Smile

deliciousdevilwoman · 13/11/2010 00:55

Too true Ballet Pink. I never thought I would agree with anything Paris "air head" Hilton had to expouse, but when she said "life's too short to blend in, dress cute" she may have had a point!

badfairy · 13/11/2010 01:12

3 days a week I am on the way too or home from work so I am smart and together 2 days a week I am not.

ChippingIn · 13/11/2010 01:17

I am for 'clean' and most of the time achieve it!

Anything over & above that is a bonus.

I wish I had a nicer figure so clothes looked better and if clothes looked better I'd shop more and look 'nicer'.

I still wouldn't wear makeup.

Do people really & honestly turn up to school in their PJ's??

badfairy · 13/11/2010 01:19

Oooh I only live 2 minutes from the school gates ....I wish I had the balls to turn up to school in my PJ's on days when I didn't have to be anywhere else Smile
