To be annoyed at how someone was wearing a poppy

Aibu I went shopping to the supermarket this morning and one of the staff was wearing a poppy in her hair as a fashion accessory. I think it's great that young people wear poppys to show respect but I found this disrespectful wearing it as a fashion accessory

aibu?

celticlassie....i got a pin with mine.

whoknowswhatthefutureholds · 10/11/2010 21:08

yabu...more people will notice it that way

bbee · 10/11/2010 21:08

my first thought would have been that it is very disrespectful but my second thought would be that it would be a way to sell more and so raise more money. Soon I think we will see them for wearing in all kinds of ways. After all how long ago were the ones for attaching to the front of your car brought in and now the celebs wear fancy ones and sell them off to raise more money and there are the fancy ones that you have to donate a minimum amount to be able to choose it.

I also note that some people who get out the metal badge poppy year after year have they donated money again?

I actually don't wear mine as they always get in the way with the children and so fall apart or the pin pricks them when hugging.

jybay · 10/11/2010 21:13

YABU - unless it was her pubic hair.

Eccentrica, poppies have always been sold to raise money for former servicemen/women.

GypsyMoth · 10/11/2010 21:14

giraffescantdancelikeannw · 10/11/2010 21:14

I dont care how people wear it, even if as a nipple piercing.

GypsyMoth · 10/11/2010 21:15

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 10/11/2010 21:16

DD1 has been wearing her poppy in her hair. She has to, her (secondary) school are selling poppies but not giving out pins because the pupils might misuse them.

Ineed2 · 10/11/2010 21:22

I felt a bit bad when I read the title of this because Dd3 has been wearing 2 in her hair, one in each plait, all week. She is 8 and we have spent time talking to her about why we buy and wear poppies and she wanted to wear 2 in her hair.

I don't feel bad now after reading other replies, actually I feel glad that my child [and many others] wants to wear poppies and understands why she is doing it.

fedupofnamechanging · 10/11/2010 21:33

YABU. Nothing wrong with wearing it in your hair.

thefirstMrsDeVere · 10/11/2010 21:34

Those poppies helped pay for our downstairs bathroom. I dont care where people bloody wear them (although even I draw the line at pubic hair, thanks for that image jybay Grin )

ChippingIn · 10/11/2010 21:35

Ineed2 - I'm glad you feel OK now.

Some people could get offended at fresh air...

JingleTits · 10/11/2010 22:04

"But in my own heart I remember those who fought and fell (including some of my family members) and I feel that that is sufficient."

Sticking a quid in the box to give them some practical help doesn't go amiss either.

dearprudence · 10/11/2010 22:11

I got a pin with my poppy, actually. The lady pinned it on my coat for me though - clearly I was not to be trusted. Grin

emptyshell · 10/11/2010 22:11

Perhaps she didn't have a pin, or couldn't use one for health and safety grounds (schools, nurseries etc - have to use sellotape to put them on the kids at school when they buy them) and didn't have a jumper or something on that you can easily push the stem through?

purplepidjin · 10/11/2010 23:16

Thank you, you've given me a really good idea for tomorrow!

PS I work with adults with learning difficulties, and a pin is a reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeally bad idea...

Heracles · 11/11/2010 03:00

I've had mine sewn directly onto my heart (right ventricle) to prove I care more than anyone on here ever.

Ner.

drfayray · 11/11/2010 03:28

DD12, DS15 and DH all wore their poppies today. We get ours with a pin. The one minute silence was observed; in the city streets etc and on the radio too. I am in Brisbane which is why it is now over.

I am wearing mine at home.

"Lest we forget."

purplepidjin · 11/11/2010 07:30

They went with songs to the battle, they were young.
Straight of limb, true of eyes, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.

badfairy · 11/11/2010 10:18

IntergalacticHussy · 11/11/2010 10:22
