To tell off a 'Chugger' for calling me love.

I've just had a guy ,about 25 years old, come to my door. He seemed to be trying to get me to sign up to support a charity.

His opening line was 'Hello Love'. Mine was 'Don't call me love' and he looked really shocked!

I'm 44 - you can't call me 'love' unless you're a family member or at least 20 years older than me!!

Is it just me?
Is it a Southern thing - I'm from London.
Is it an age thing?
Maybe I'm just an old grouch?

I think some of them get the job because they're 'characters', I'm sure that kind of banter works on some people. Doesn't do it for me at all, and I'm sure you haven't done him any really harm by chewing him out for it.

2shoes · 10/11/2010 15:47

yanbu
But I normally call them parasites anyway

cupcakesandbunting · 10/11/2010 15:51

Fuck's sake YANBU.

I've been accosted in the street by chuggers twice in the last week. First time I was with my mum and he said "OMG! (yes, actually OMG) are you sisters or friends?!" the second said to my 3 yr old DS "ooh can I have a talk to your big sister?"

Both times I gave them the glare. I hate the cynical way they try and flatter women into stopping and talking to them. Just fuck off.

greentig3r · 10/11/2010 15:51

Cal Lightman (Tim Roth) uses it a lot in Lie To Me (US series). Think its supposed to make him seem like a right rough diamond cockney geezer type, but its not entirely convincing. Maybe your chugger is a fan. Did he shout 'Oi' at you, that's another one he does?

Bue · 10/11/2010 15:52

I used to find 'love' quite endearing because I'm from Canada and I found it charming and English. But it is increasingly grating on me - now I think it's incredibly patronising.

And someone 20 years younger than you calling you love? Just NO.

Petsville · 10/11/2010 15:54

YANBU - I get so cross with young men I've never met calling me "love". Really hate it: he wouldn't do it to a bloke. (Disclaimer: am from North of England and I don't mind being called "love" by older women who do the same to my DH!)

ethelina · 10/11/2010 15:54

No-ones allowed to call me any term of endearment unless they are married to me, born by me or my parents (even then its pushing it)

I would have told him he must have the wrong house and shut the door.

ethelina · 10/11/2010 15:55

And yes i'm southern as well. I really really hate it.

cupcakesandbunting · 10/11/2010 15:58

I just hate the way that they assume that because we're women, it must follow that we will like being called "love", "darling" etc. What do they do to men? Compliment them on the size of their biceps? Hmm

sixpercenttruejedi · 10/11/2010 16:03

I hate it too. If in a situation where I can simply say "don't call me that" I do, but some blokes can turn and get very aggressive when you ask not to be called love. In some situations I found it much more effective to turn it back on them.
Sugar plum, Cupcake and Twinkle, are my favourites. One young man actually spluttered with outrage that I would dare to call him twinkle. Still makes me Grin

MardyBra · 10/11/2010 16:06

Hate it - makes me feel like an old biddy now I'm approaching the menopause. Shall try the Twinkle offensive next time.

sapphireblue · 10/11/2010 16:08

Hate it too.

Never heard the word chugger though! Where's that from?

newwave · 10/11/2010 16:09

Dont like the chuggers but have no problem with being called "love" it's harmless

ethelina · 10/11/2010 16:12

Chugger = CHarity mUGGER. Someone who 'mugs' you into donating on the spot.

sixpercenttruejedi · 10/11/2010 16:13

chugger = charity mugger

newwave · 10/11/2010 16:15

Sixpercent, no doubt he did, it's another name for a gay man or at least twink is. :o

daimbardiva · 10/11/2010 16:16

YANBU I find over-familiarity like that instantly annoying and grating. I'm entirely with you on that one!

And don't get me started on Chuggers and how they are all a bit of a "character" ...

cupcakesandbunting · 10/11/2010 16:23

Yes, they're all a bit of a gobby annoying twat character, aren't they? They could do with employing some manners. They might get further.

eldritch · 10/11/2010 16:23

YANBU, how patronising. I have little time for these collectors, especially the doorstepping ones. Worst line they have tried on me when I politely declined (had answered door with baby perched on hip)was "so, don't you care about sick kids then?", while simultanously jamming his foot in the door and attempting to tickle DS under the chin (luckily DS bites! Grin )

systemsaddict · 10/11/2010 16:25

I clicked on this thread thinking you had been to an over-familiar Chuggington theme park ...

Lulumaam · 10/11/2010 16:31

I cannot abide chuggers, the way they leap in front of you , try to touch you, ask your name, and be really overfamiliar

DH and I were abused verbally by a chugger recently, for asking him to leave us alone, he'd approached myself and Dh 3 times between us and DH told him to stop harrassing us. he followed us down the street asking us to define harassment and telling us not to be 'fuckers' about it.

that's really going to make me donate

and the chuggers get a significant %age of each donation.

there is a 9 step rule /bye law, i forget which, they can take 9 steps towards you , alongside you and then away from you, a total of 9 steps, after that , they cannot follow

and definitely no touching!

Lulumaam · 10/11/2010 16:31

sorry, it's a total of 9 steps

3 towards, 3 alongside and 3 back from you

emptyshell · 10/11/2010 16:31

Move to the midlands - you just get called duck then!

oxeye · 10/11/2010 16:33

I thought this was going to be a thread about CBEEBIES trains
clearly I need to get a life

waterbaby100 · 10/11/2010 16:38
