to think that I can't do a child's party for under £450?

I know I am Wink

Come and give me some ideas on how to cut costs!

Plan is to do a leaving party for my 2 DCS (3 and 6) as we are moving house and leaving the area. Will be 50 children (2 classes) plus any siblings.

Costs -
£150 entertainer (as I'll be on my own, DH will have gone on ahead to new house)
Hall - £60 (also essential as packing/no DH etc)
Food - £100 (£2 per head? bearing in mind siblings and tea/coffee/biscuits for parents)
Party bag/sweets - £3 a head so £150

How can I reduce the cost? With 50 children even the party bags/sweets etc add up.

Scrap party bags - at my DC's school (wealthy middle class parents) no one spends more than £1 max, usually 50p book from the book people. Can't believe that anyone would even consider spending £3.

Have party at a time that is not a mealtime so cut down on food costs.

hello there

i do have an idea but it depends upon how good your school is and whether your kids are in the same school i.e preschool/y2?

when we emigrated - same scenario DH had gone on ahead - i got permission from the headteacher to bring in a magician for the afternoon.

The class teacher/TA were happy/had an afternoon in classroom to do stuff i.e. were present but could mark.

Chose a magician i had seen at local leisure centre - he was great - cost 75 quid and made balloon animals for the class/let them stroke the bunny rabbit after the show.

Class all brought in a party item from home i.e. crisps cake biccies and we all ate these naughty things after the show.

Kids took home the balloon animal and i gave them all a magic note pad with new address on ...very cheap from a poundstretcher type place.

All in cost about 90 quid only cos i bought the magician a crate of beer on top.

If you have two classes you could amalgamate them/use a large classroom after lunch (go in and move the tables to side) or use the hall (pending drama P.E etc).

Teachers tell parents about the free magic show - as you foot the bill for that - but can they bring in a packet of jammy dodgers...

Hey presto!

BUT i was lucky - i knew the school staff pretty well and had already got them on side by giving them loads of old toys for the PTA sale before we moved. They could have said No though, it's mid term, too chaotic etc but i figured no harm in asking.

If this isn't a remote possibility then i would cut out your party bags or certainly the budget for them. One mum i know gave each child a new pencil taped on a bookmark with new address on....bought in bulk packs, a lot cheaper than small items per child per bag (even at asda with a balloon, cheap yoyo, pkt of mini smarties etc it all adds up)

Last idea would be to see whether a wacky warehouse type place would cut you a better deal than usual for bringing 50 kids. This is a tough one as i know there are usually limits for a normal party and with food and balloons at 8 quid a head that is 400 only saving you 50 but...maybe another similar place could do it for less or you hire the place out when they are not busy or on a slow time?

Personally would never take 50 kids on a trip anywhere without a whole amount of back up and sadly no weather to meet for picnic in park but the ballparks usually have soft area for little ones, climbing for big and staff on.

Good luck!!!

I don't even do party bags for birthday parties. They get to take away some birthday cake, that's all.

Any kid (or parent) who is rude enough to comment would not get invited back the following year Grin None has.

In your case, you're not looking for repeat invites - giving the party is thanks enough - as ypou're leaving.

You are having a party for 50.

You fule.

blueshoes · 06/11/2010 21:20

alfabetty, I did the same hall/entertainer party format for 50 dcs and parents. £450+ is about right. £150 for 2 hours entertainer time is pretty good value!

mellicauli · 06/11/2010 21:30

You are leaving the area. Your children will never see these other kids again and won't remember them in a year.

My boy (6) doesn't remember his best friend from when he was 4 and is forgetting his new best friend who left this summer.

Invest in the future: put the money away for their tuition fees or have a party for a smaller number of the kids in the new area.

use a ipod for a disco /musical chairs /pass the parcel do the food yourself , bring in a tv borrow someones wii and have a wii /just dance party the kids will love it entertainers are largely crap im my experiance ask the hall if they have those large flask type things that store coffee (sorry i forget the name) and keep milk sugar etc next to it for parents , there is some good party food out for xmas and children dont usually eat much at parties anyway
hope it goes well its a lovely thing you are doing

If you seel you have to do a gift for DD birthday I trawled Tesco as bought loads of end of range pen sets Icarly, Ben 10 etc for 25p each then bought a sweet. Loads of parents said they were glad they DC didnt get a bag full of the little crappy plastci toys that I know kids love but are annoying.

Goodbye party with fifty kids?
You are off your freaking head

QuantaCosta · 07/11/2010 00:10

Why? Why? Why?

Seems like a total waste of money to me.

if you really are desperate to say 'goodbye' invite a few close friends to a play area or something but as mellicauli said in six months time your kids won't even remember any of these children.
