to feel that nothing is off limits comedy wise?

when I think of things that have really made me laugh some of them would be VERY offensive to some groups (mostly religious, and I believe in god)...I'm thinking about Sarah Silverman, Dennis Leary's no cure for cancer, Chris Rock etc etc.

Comedy is about offence to a certain extent isn't it as the funniest things are the ones that are closest to the bone, laughter relieves anxiety and therefore the graver and most serious something is (like the nazi's for eg) the funnier it can be (vis the producers for eg).

Dave Allen had it in for Catholics and my catholic mother used to weep with laughter at him. Derek and Clive take the piss about Cancer to great effect.

Now there are some 'comedians' that I think are shit: Bernard Manning springs to mind...but I don't think that banning them or censoring or protesting is the way forward, just don't view!

There are threads on here regularly about topics that mner's feel are off limits to comedy, most especially special needs. But I'm pretty sure that many special needs adults wouldn't appreciate being singled out as something that cannot be a source of humour...the ability to laugh at oneself including the tragedies and limitations of our lives is really important isn't it?

I maybe totally wrong, and maybe it's only ok if it is a special needs person doing it?

I have never ROFL'd before, but - 'George and Mildred on Acid' Grin

That Chris Rock clip actually illustrates why it would be a really bad idea to have some kind of ruling board of comedy with the power to ban certain subjects. Chris Rock is talking about rape, racism, animal abuse and child abuse, and what he says is funny and it is also coming from a well-intentioned moral standpoint. Oh yes it is. The best comedy about 'taboo' subjects also gives people something to think about. But that would be the first thing to be suppressed if there was a Proper Authority to Ban Stuff that might offend the stupid.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 08/11/2010 07:48

people aren't "stupid" if they are offended by something that personally affects them.

2shoes · 08/11/2010 08:16

i see the attention seeking bigot took over the thread......as usual.

NerdyFace · 08/11/2010 08:46

I agee with the OP.

It's either ALL ok to laugh at or NOTHING is ok to laugh at.

You can't pick and choose what people are allowed to find amusing.

how can it be all ok to laugh at?

it's never ok to laugh at disabled people and there's a difference between someone highlighting ignorant attitudes through comedy and someone actually just taking the piss.

i don't see the difference between taking a stance on racist comedy and the FB downs 'jokes'.

and daft punk never answered my masturbation/pornography question... if you're a conservative catholic how do you reconcile your view about men being weird if they don't wank and like porn?

daftpunk · 08/11/2010 09:46

I'll tell you, save you looking it up:

It's a word used to describe someone who is intolerant of opinions differing from their own, or intolerant of people of different sexual orientation, race, class, religion etc.

yep thats you dear

daftpunk · 08/11/2010 09:49

I Tolerate people I'm not overly mad about - therefore I am not a bigot.

you'll have to come up with another word for me.

2shoes · 08/11/2010 09:50

no cos you are one,
you have proved it time and time again.

blinks · 08/11/2010 09:53

the majority (the non racists) among us are now so highly tuned into potential racism that we immediately find it unacceptable... when it comes to disability though our boundaries are waaay less rigid.

word like 'retard', 'spacca', 'spastic' and references to being a 'bit special' etc are used in common conversation... not always in reference to anyone with special needs, but nonetheless it has blurred the lines about what is and isn't acceptable.

there should be, like with racist comedy, a clear message that bigoted remarks will not be tolerated in public settings. you can't stop people finding it funny, but as a society it should be commonly known that it won't be tolerated.

daftpunk · 08/11/2010 09:54

You can't tolerate someone laughing at something you don't happen to find funny, you can't tolerate someone having an opinion that differs to yours.

Maybe you're a bigot 2shoes.... have you ever thought about that?

blinks · 08/11/2010 09:54

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand what about the wanking and porn????

blinks · 08/11/2010 09:54

that's like saying black people are bigoted towards the KKK.

2shoes · 08/11/2010 09:57

lol Daftpunk, nice try. but doesn't quite work, but if hating your views on minorities, makes me a bigot, fine.
if thinking taking the piss out of disabled people makes me a bigot fine,
but we all know it doesn't

daftpunk · 08/11/2010 10:01

There's nothing wrong with wanking and porn, and if a man ever tells you he's not into it because he's -
'a feminist ' - he's lying. or just seriously weird.

2shoes · 08/11/2010 10:02

oh here we, the world according to DP full of crap
