to feel that nothing is off limits comedy wise?

when I think of things that have really made me laugh some of them would be VERY offensive to some groups (mostly religious, and I believe in god)...I'm thinking about Sarah Silverman, Dennis Leary's no cure for cancer, Chris Rock etc etc.

Comedy is about offence to a certain extent isn't it as the funniest things are the ones that are closest to the bone, laughter relieves anxiety and therefore the graver and most serious something is (like the nazi's for eg) the funnier it can be (vis the producers for eg).

Dave Allen had it in for Catholics and my catholic mother used to weep with laughter at him. Derek and Clive take the piss about Cancer to great effect.

Now there are some 'comedians' that I think are shit: Bernard Manning springs to mind...but I don't think that banning them or censoring or protesting is the way forward, just don't view!

There are threads on here regularly about topics that mner's feel are off limits to comedy, most especially special needs. But I'm pretty sure that many special needs adults wouldn't appreciate being singled out as something that cannot be a source of humour...the ability to laugh at oneself including the tragedies and limitations of our lives is really important isn't it?

I maybe totally wrong, and maybe it's only ok if it is a special needs person doing it?

so no mention of getting the termoligy wrong, yet you set yourself up as the spokesperson fo adults with sn!!

so in that case do you think comedy about dead babies is ok?
about rape?
the holocaust ?

curlymama · 06/11/2010 21:54

Agree with sophable, there are shit comedians and shit jokes.

Some jokes made about any group of society can be funny without being degrading. You can usually tell if a joke is being made in an offensive way, and that in itself tends to make it not funny.

Heathcliffscathy · 06/11/2010 22:05

i'm very sorry to get the terminology wrong 2shoes. what is the correct terminology?

yes, yes and yes to the last three...whether i'd find them funny or not depends very much on the comedian but none of them are off limits. and if you'd even begun to read my posts properly you'd see that i've already mentioned the holocaust. but clearly you haven't.

i was going to post that i'm not sure there is any circumstance that i would find comedy about dead babies funny until i remembered morningpapers firing babies into the lebanon post. which was very funny indeed.

OP posts:
Heathcliffscathy · 06/11/2010 22:07

and i'm really not sure that i set myself as a spokesperson for anyone but myself!

OP posts:

so jokes about dead babies are okHmm

Hedgeblunder · 06/11/2010 22:10

I posted last week about being upset by a horribly racist joke about black babies. It wasn't funny, it was completely vile
I stand by that.

Heathcliffscathy · 06/11/2010 22:13

2shoes what are you trying to say? that i'm a nasty person that wants babies to die, that thinks babies dying is funny? what is it you're trying to say? have you read my posts? do you understand any of them?

have just had a baby btw which makes your post particularly offensive.

but hey if you want to make a joke about it, i won't try to stop you.

OP posts:
Heathcliffscathy · 06/11/2010 22:13

hedgeblunder i'm not arguing that jokes can't be offensive at all. of course they can be. hideously so.

OP posts:
2shoes · 06/11/2010 22:19

I have no idea how old your dc's are, but strange that you find that example offensive.
hmmmmmmmm proves the point really

Heathcliffscathy · 06/11/2010 22:20

2shoes i SO get that things can be deeply and hurtfully offensive. of course i do, i can get very offended! we all have our light the blue touch paper areas. but that doesn't mean that anything is off limits imho. that's all.

OP posts:
bigcar · 06/11/2010 22:24

so what about adults with learning disabilites that may not get the 'joke' and can't answer back for themselves? It's ok for you if you find something offensive, you can complain, speak out, what about those most vulnerable people in our society that can't?

2shoes · 06/11/2010 22:25

good point bigcar.
I think the op forgets that a lot of disabled people don't have a voice. but maybe that is why they are an easy target.

think you're probably right there 2shoes

Heathcliffscathy · 06/11/2010 22:30

ok, point taken. can there be learning disabled comedians? i'm sure there can. can they talk about what it feels like to be learning disabled? yes.

beyond which like i said in my op, sometimes it is the nature of the taboo that makes something funny...that something SO dark can be the subject of humour makes it funny.

OP posts:
Heathcliffscathy · 06/11/2010 22:31

i did say in my op that there are SHITE comedians and SHITE jokes. that are offensive and just crap. of course there are.

but i guess i do believe that nothing is off limits.

OP posts:
2shoes · 06/11/2010 22:36

learning disabled comedians

sorry what is that?

Heathcliffscathy · 06/11/2010 22:38

you don't think they do or could exist? i would hope they could 2shoes...does being learning disabled preclude you from being funny?

OP posts:
msrisotto · 06/11/2010 22:39

Comedians with learning disabilities? What's wrong with that?

Why is everyone jumping on the op here? She's not being deliberately offensive Confused

Heathcliffscathy · 06/11/2010 22:41

i rest my case

sounds like a fantastic show by a comedian with cerebral palsey.

OP posts:
2shoes · 06/11/2010 22:41

I just think if someone is going to pretend to be a voice for a section of the community they should at least know that they are people first.

2shoes · 06/11/2010 22:42

see op you can do it:o

Heathcliffscathy · 06/11/2010 22:43

and again

OP posts:
msrisotto · 06/11/2010 22:44

op never was pretending to be a voice for a section of the community. I found your response(s, not just you) unnecessarily aggressive.
