sitting in a bus shelter were; a mum with a tiny baby in a sling, a mum with a toddler and a 6ish mo in a buggy, a heavily pg woman with a toddler and an elderly couple, there's a seat free in the middle of everyone in the little shelter. Along comes a young man, he sits in the spare seat and proceeds to light a cigarette. pg woman asks him if he could please smoke away from the shelter, he says in a confrontational way 'if you don't like it you can move, I'm allowed to smoke here'

he smoked the rest of his cigarette sitting down in an empty shelter.

wanker!

People seem to have little respect or time for others in all areas imho.

You were there first - so he chose to come along and be confrontational, IMO. Marking him out as a wanker, IMO

jonesy71 · 05/11/2010 13:06

at MD

just had an image of the cat shuffling in the cold with his co-workers with a big ciggy on the go.

HystericalMe · 05/11/2010 13:06

I thought it was illegal to smoke in public places, bus shelters being one of them!

And if someone asks, then he could move to one end or the other couldn't he?

JamieLeeCurtis · 05/11/2010 13:14

People like this are like people who let their dogs shit on the pavement. It's really not worth asking them to pick it up. They know that it is harmful, unpleasant and will upset other people but they don't give a toss

TrillianAstra · 05/11/2010 13:24

Leting your dog shit on the pavement is illegal. Smoking while waiting for a bus is not.

I agree, if it counted as a place where it was illegal to smoke it would be covered in signs.

CheeseandGherkins · 05/11/2010 13:32

From a quick google it is illegal.

MaMoTTaT · 05/11/2010 13:40

It depends on how many walls are supporting it.

One supported by 1 wall you are allowed, if it has 2 walls it's illegal - all to do with what is classed as "substantially enclosed"

JamieLeeCurtis · 05/11/2010 13:40

But Trillian, what I'm getting at is that the illegality or legality of the action doesn't matter to the person. I'm pretty sure that telling someone that not picking up the poo is illegal, is not going to sway them

nancydrewrocked · 05/11/2010 13:49

Regardless of whether he was legally permitted to smoke there what sort of person is that much of an arse that they will wilfully disregard the comfort of others around them? He was clearly a twat.

Next time just merrily remark that this pregnancy has made you terribly nauseous and the one thing that really seems to trigger you is smoke...giggle light heartedly when you say that you will try and avoid splashing his shoes when you vomit and then start coughing...and wretching.

Unrulysun · 05/11/2010 14:03

Can't believe some people think YABU!

Loads of things which are legal are really anti- social. It's just about thinking about other people. What a horrible sad person. Most people are sp nice when you're pg as well.

ENormaSnob · 05/11/2010 16:09

I thought it was illegal too.

If I had been there whilst preganant I would have thrown up on his lap. As would be my right to do so Grin

BonniePrinceBilly · 05/11/2010 16:17

You do not have to have a sign up in every single place it is illegal to smoke, otherwise the whole bloody country would be a mass of no-smoking signs.

Smokey-man in wrong, not legal.

glitterstar88 · 05/11/2010 16:23

YANBU
Around here there are no smoking signs on the bus stop poles even when there is no shelter.

Marjee · 05/11/2010 17:28

Yanbu he was very rude and inconsiderate and I say that as a smoker!

Before the anti-smoking brigade turn up I would like to say that I never smoke near people if I can help it unless they are smoking too and I ALWAYS move away when there are children or pregnant women near me, even if I was there first. Grin

well i smoke and i wouldnt do this, hes a rude twat!

MumblingClothDoll · 06/11/2010 20:54

he was not right...it's now illegal to smoke in any kind of sheltered area.

PinkieMinx · 06/11/2010 21:01

YANBU - I smoke and am so fed up of being vilified for it BUT this lad was a prize cock. He chose to sit in middle of a group most people wouldn't smoke around - twatty twat twat!

QueenOfTheNight · 06/11/2010 21:10

Nah - he was totally out of order. I'm a smoker and know that you can't smoke in bus shelters. He shouldn't have done it.

And even if you could I wouldn't have dreamed of doing such a thing. I might be a smoker but I wouldn't dream of forcing my smoke on anyone like that. Some people are just rude and ignorant whatever the circumstances.

juicychops · 06/11/2010 21:32

i too would have said something. I HATE smoking with a passion and i too thought it was now illegal to smoke in a bus shelter
