To not want to be seen out in public with my DD?

My MIL is taking my DD to see the Peppa Pig live thing at the theatre.
She has bought her a peppa pig t-shirt, trousers, fleece, hat, boots and socks to wear to the show. I have to pick her up afterwards. AIBU to cover her up with a sheet so no-one sees me out with her looking like peppa pig threw up on her?

I hate, hate, hate character clothing and any bits (there are many) that my MIL has bought in the past are all reserved for pjs only.

(I should add that my MIL is a wonderful grandmother but we just have very different opinions on things)

YABVU. Let children be children. You are only thinking of yourself.

gorionSPARKLERS · 05/11/2010 07:36

It would be mean to cover her with a sheet, I think the right solution would be that you wear this so no one will recognise youGrin

gingerali · 05/11/2010 07:37

lol The shame! I feel your pain however wait until your DD is 14 and does not want to be seen with you lol

Grin To be honest I agree with letting children be children and if they enjoy wearing something then I go with it. (Within reason) I bet your dd will love the clothes and want to wear them all the time!

Squitten · 05/11/2010 07:40

LOL - I feel your pain. You should definitely take a photo and send it in to Ch5 - you might get a mention!

Oh, and spare a thought for those of us with sons who would gladly wear exactly the same thing. You think YOU would get looks... Grin

savoycabbage · 05/11/2010 07:44

YANBU, Peppa Pig looks like a hairdryer. You should don a full on disguise I think.

KaraStarbuckThrace · 05/11/2010 07:56

Here you go

piscesmoon · 05/11/2010 07:58

If your DD likes it then just get on with it!
I though it was going to be a teenage question-there are times when I don't want to be seen with mine.( I have clothes that they don't let me get out of the car in!)

piscesmoon · 05/11/2010 07:58

sorry-thought

Northernlurker · 05/11/2010 08:02

Oh get over yourself - your mil is treasuring your child, your child will have a lovely time and be warm. I don't like Peppa Pig either but sometimes you just have to grin and bear these things.

TheJollyPirate · 05/11/2010 08:03

Ha! And I thought this was going to be a "dreadful teenager" thread.Grin

But YABU (or maybe not lol)

HowToShoutSoHusbandsWillListen · 05/11/2010 08:05

Dd1 went mad for the whole Dora kit when she was young. We relented in the end and bought her it. This was summer so it was Dora top, Dora shorts, Dora sandals, Dora Mac, Dora Sunnies, Dora hat, she even had Dora socks and knickers. She loved that outfit. She would have slept in if she was allowed. It passed down to dd2 who felt the same.

YABU. They are just clothes. So long as they are clean and weather appropriate does it really matter that much? God knows the Dora stuff looked a lot better than most of the outfits dd1 dressed herself in. At least they matched.

thekidsmom · 05/11/2010 08:14

I say you should wear a disguise when you pick her up and go in a taxi so noone recognises the car..... sorted

Half the fun of being a granny!!

Tidey · 05/11/2010 09:51

Daddy Pig looks like a cock and balls.

I agree with you OP, I don't mind character pyjamas but trainers and clothes with cartoons all over them look 'orrible.

anothernewname09 · 05/11/2010 13:24

I would write the same post if I was you!

MIL bought DD a t shirt saying "grandma loves me!"

Nightwear only!!

SlightlyJaded · 05/11/2010 13:29

Wait till she's nine and wants to go out in a completely unsuitable High School Music ensemble. Therein shame lies

Also, perhaps you could dress from head to toe in merchandise from your favourite TV programme. A nice Desperate Housewives outfit or something.

Grin i do actually feel your pain. I feel similar shame when DD wants to wear anything Tinkerbell, Disney Princess etc - none of which I would EVER buy (except knickers/nightwear) but which she manages to accumulate regardless.

pranma · 05/11/2010 13:43

But what is a grandma to do?There is so much Buzz Lightyear stuff about and dgs needs to dress appropriately for his trips 'to infinity and beyoooooond!'

thumbwheel · 05/11/2010 13:46

ha ha ha! YANBU at all, IMO.

I can barely cope with the little things DS has now, if MIL had her way he's be head to toe in Wiggles stuff, or something equally obnoxious.

I'd be covering her up in a nice big overcoat, or perhaps a Hallowe'en witch's cloak if you have one.

I also loathe Peppa Pig and am eternally grateful that she doesn't seem to have made it round the globe to Australia - we have nearly everything else but not that vile creation, or the other one from the same makers (fairies in a garden, is it?)
