To be annoyed at Ds1 watching X Factor at school?

He's in yr1. He's watched dvds at school too when its been too wet to play outside and on Monday they watched X Factor.
I don't know if I'm over-reacting but I'd rather he did something else.
I want to have a word with his teacher today.

PS no, YANBU. Have heard of kids being allowed to watch DVDs on last day of term etc but not wet play, surely will be every day in the winter. Maybe suggest that you could send in an old game for the children to have in class, if lots of parents did this they would have plenty to keep them occupied.

Shaxx · 03/11/2010 13:49

Lol. I don't know if it was on dvd or just a recording or whatever it was, Yr1 watched it!

A bit unimaginative tbh.

My kids would be bored to tears tbh and would rather watch Annie or Pingu!! :)

FreudianSlimmery · 03/11/2010 13:50

That's weird. Why choose x factor? They must have other options?!

TheBreastmilksOnMe · 03/11/2010 13:50

YABU- I remember we used to watch videos at school when it was raining outside. It was fun and it kept us entertained. I don't see the problem with it TBH. The teachers need a break too and they can't have kids running around indoors, also it wouldn't be fair to make the kids do some structured work when it's their free time too.

mrsruffallo · 03/11/2010 13:50

I would be livid. I can force feed my children drivel if I want to, but they are not at school to learn the subject of bland

GunpowderTreasonAndSNOTSleeves · 03/11/2010 13:51

this would be unacceptable to me

and warrants complaint

Serendippy · 03/11/2010 13:52

Depends how long the break is, Breastmilk If they are sitting watching a DVD for 50 mins after eating lunch it is too long. I really like the idea of my DCs (when they finally go to school) using break times to socialise, or at this age, begin to learn how to socialise.

Rhinestone · 03/11/2010 13:54

What's wrong with reading a book? Unacceptable and I would be making a complaint to the governors and Ofsted.

TheJollyPirate · 03/11/2010 13:55

My son (ASD and ADHD) would nt have watched it and I would imagine plenty of other kids are the same. I suspect (hope) that it was among a range of activities they could choose from.

I wouldn't be annoyed if it was part of several activities - I bet it's something many of them watch at home.

FreudianSlimmery · 03/11/2010 13:56

Mind you I can top this I think - my DSDs were in yr7 last year and in one lesson they had a supply teacher. They borrowed a Family Guy DVD and watched it in the lesson. I mean I love FG, have every episode but the girls were 11 FFS!

Rollmops · 03/11/2010 13:57

This is child abuse, pure and simple. No, I'm not being sarcastic.Hmm
Nobody but nobody should be subjected to reality television, least of all the children.
Unless breeding a braindead moronic generation is the ultimate goal.

TheJollyPirate · 03/11/2010 13:59

Perleeease

Life is far far far too short to get undies in a bunch over this. What a load of stress you would give yourself making complaints to school/governers/OFSTED. Get a grip please - this is X factor - bland idiotic rubbish and NOT Call of Duty Mega Death "let's rip everybodies heads off" type of DVD/Gaming.

Perhaps the activity could have been better cjosen but to involve the Head/Governers and Ofstead over somethinbg this trivial seems OTT.

Or AIBU?

TheBreastmilksOnMe · 03/11/2010 14:01

Seren- We would have a choice of activities including the video for the last 40mins after lunch. Reading, playing board games, drawing/colouring in and watching a video. This didn't stop us from socialising! Kids love sitting together watching something that they all enjoy.

mrsruffallo · 03/11/2010 14:01

Life is far too short to watch X factor

Serendippy · 03/11/2010 14:03

Breastmilk a choice of activities is fine. What would worry me was if all the children were sitting in silence in the dark for their whole lunch hour every single day. Don't even get me started on children not going out to play if it is drizzling, partly because of parents sending children in without coats! Grrr.

capricorn76 · 03/11/2010 14:05

I have no time for the X Factor and wouldn't like my child being forced to watch it at school so I would complain. In any case how rainy was it? I didn't see any reports of hurricanes on Monday? When I was at school unless it was unbelievable bad weather, we were still made to play outside, mainly we played for a bit then huddled under the verandas. It was down to our parents to ensure we were suitablly dressed for the weather. We live in Britain, it rains. A lot.

If the school has a policy of keeping kids in when it rains then they should have more imaginative things planned than subjecting kids to the Chava Cole and Simon Cowell propaganda machine.

TheJollyPirate · 03/11/2010 14:05

Yep - agree totally about life being too short to watch X-Factor - I never watch and neither does DS. I cannot think that he would have done in school either.

I would feel more irritated if it was the only activity on offer.

Serendippy · 03/11/2010 14:09

capricorn teachers cannot send PFBs children out to play without coats because parents will complain about them having to sit in wet clothing all afternoon, not fair on the child. Hark back to the days when you were always sent to school with a coat. Mind you, it might have been because it was a local school where everyone walked in.

mrsruffallo · 03/11/2010 14:10

I don't even like them watching DVD's so I maybe be a bit extreme- I just think why not word games or some class bonding?

Bramshott · 03/11/2010 14:11

I was all prepared to say YABU, thinking that this was a way of engaging 14 yrs olds in a debate about pop music or the media - but Yr 1 Shock!!

FreudianSlimmery · 03/11/2010 14:12

Wait, do schools really keep kids in just because it's raining? That's sad. At both my DD's preschools they go out in all weathers (they have lots of spare coats etc in case of forgetful parents like me) - DD would be hopping mad if she couldn't go out on the bike all the live long day. It's just water FGS.

Shaxx · 03/11/2010 14:16

Thats what I'd rather ds1 was doing - playing outside, socialising or playing indoor games. I don't watch x faxtor as I think its rubbish and I really would prefer that ds1 wasn't subjected to it either.

potplant · 03/11/2010 14:17

I hate hate hate hate X Factor and all it stands for so I would also be angry about it.

I would complain to the class teacher and possibly the head, Ofsted is a bit over the top.

(Oh and I'm not being snobby about reality TV - I loved Big Brother Blush but I don't let my DCs watch it)
