To be annoyed at Ds1 watching X Factor at school?

He's in yr1. He's watched dvds at school too when its been too wet to play outside and on Monday they watched X Factor.
I don't know if I'm over-reacting but I'd rather he did something else.
I want to have a word with his teacher today.

From Ofsted's website -

"Ofsted is the Office for Standards in Education, Children?s Services and Skills. We regulate and inspect to achieve excellence in the care of children and young people, and in education and skills for learners of all ages."

If my child was shown the X-Factor at school then I would want them to explain - to the highest authority - why this was deemed more educational than reading a book.

JamieLeeCurtis · 03/11/2010 14:43

YANBU. This isn't right

NoahAndTheWhale · 03/11/2010 14:44

I wouldn't be happy at this - at wet playtime we used to read magazines or play games or things. At DS and DD's school there is only an hour at lunchtime and they seem to spend about 30 minutes eating lunch so there wouldn't be much time to watch anything anyway.

Serendippy · 03/11/2010 14:46

Do not go to OFSTED. Ask the teacher. I would hope that if someone went to OFSTED with something so trivial and easy to sort out that their first question would be; What did the teacher say when you asked about the situation?

NoahAndTheWhale · 03/11/2010 14:49

I wouldn't suggest going to Ofsted by the way. I would mention it to the teacher - sometimes things can be not quite the way children interpret them.

gorionSPARKLERS · 03/11/2010 14:51

YANBU, I do not let my dcs watch it at home and I would be really unhappy to watch it in school (would not bother me if they watched it at a friend BTW but in school ? That's a no from meGrin

ChippingIn · 03/11/2010 14:52

Oh FGS - they watched x-factor, they weren't given a line of coke!

Yes it's shit, but it's really not going to hurt them to watch a bit one lunchtime.

gorionSPARKLERS · 03/11/2010 14:58

It might not hurt the child but what about his family who has to put up with the consequences ? DS2 Watched 5 minutes at a friend and it was enough for him to inflict very bad Simon Cowel impersonations on us all after (Well he was quite funny but when it is all day it gets a bit on your nerves).Grin

LynetteScavo · 03/11/2010 15:02

Well, I love, love, love X Factor, but I know my DD (Y1) would get fed up of watching it after about 5 mins.

I wouldn't be bothered about her watching it at school, if the class really wanted to.

I bet next wet lunchtime they have their own X Factor competition (singing competitions were very popular during wet lunchtimes with DD's calss last year)

TBH, I would be more likely to complain that the children were't allowed to play out in the rain. They're not going to melt.

JamieLeeCurtis · 03/11/2010 15:04

X factor teaches emotional incontinence and casual cruelty to people with mental ilnesses

JamieLeeCurtis · 03/11/2010 15:04

... illnesses

LynetteScavo · 03/11/2010 15:05

Have you wathced X FActor lately,JamieLeeCurtis?

JamieLeeCurtis · 03/11/2010 15:06

Yes I have. Very flat singing (and hair)

WestYorkshirePudding · 03/11/2010 15:07

My 6yr old would be bored stiff and running riot if they put X Factor on during a wet playtime!

ArcticRoll · 03/11/2010 15:11

yanbu

pommedeterre · 03/11/2010 16:02

Ahhh my first ever 'in my day' moan. In my day we played outside even in the rain.
I now am truly old.

tethersend · 03/11/2010 16:16

OP, do you object to them watching a DVD or watching x factor?

Other than that, what ChippingIn said.

cansu · 03/11/2010 17:35

If you are going to complain about this then you will have alifetime of complaining to do. I would guess it's on in the background for those who wish to watch it and they will be drawing, chatting and doing other stuff too. The next time it may well be something you approve of! It isn't my choice but it isn't going to harm your dc to spend ten minutes with it on in the background.

LelloLorry · 03/11/2010 17:39

How about suggesting a different dvd?
The educational ones, I mean - DD1 watched some dvds getting ready for her YR6 SATS, perhaps they have them for younger years?

Ooh, I googled, there is! Point the teachers in this direction? www.bbc.co.uk/schools/

SamanthaB · 05/11/2010 17:16

They keep children in when it rains because it's not actually very pleasant sitting in wet clothes with wet hair for a few hours. Also what's wrong with the X factor, most children enjoy singing and dancing and it's better than sitting for hours on games consoles.

GunpowderTreasonAndSNOTSleeves · 05/11/2010 21:54

Samantha - so some sort of coat would be in order then

and X Factor is sadly not primarily about singing or dancing and is NOT appropriate for children to be wasting their time on in school

there are enough of them watching mindless unnsuitable claptrap at home without schools peddling it as well

carocaro · 05/11/2010 21:56

Just a bit lazy of the teachers I think, they must have had something else for them to watch, they always have The Snowman or The Borrowers or something a little lite and fun. Watching VWagner scares me a little let alone year 1's!

lecce · 05/11/2010 22:19

I would most certainly complain if my dc were subjected to SATs prep dvds during their breaktime, or, indeed, at any other time. There's a reason why many schools have boycotted them, you know.

There may be other, more age-appropriate things for them to watch but I don't see this as a big deal at all. The idea of going to OFSTED over it is ludicrous.

Where does it say in the op that children who wished to were prevented from reading while it was on?

YABU, They were'nt watching it in lesson time, They were watching it in thier break time which should be a break and not for making them do something educational.
