to think this mum takes the ironing thing too far?

I don't iron. I get that some things probably should be ironed, but on the whole, I feel people iron way more than they should.

But a mum at the school gates today had me judging her a bit too obsessive. She said she'd remembered to bring her DS's PE kit (which I'd forgotten Blush), but hadn't had time to iron his PE shirt, so she would have to take it back home at the end of the day to iron it.

PE kits get left at school. The kids screw their kit up and chuck it into the bag after PE every week. So WHY did she need to iron it?

I'm baffled.... Confused

Some strange people actually like ironing. The poor misguided souls... (My childminder - as in the one who looked after me when I was little - used to enjoy it so much she even ironed her husband's and sons' Y-fronts.)

thelunar66 · 01/11/2010 22:57

Never ironed any school uniform. I am a master in the age old art of strategic drying instead.

moondog · 01/11/2010 22:57

I like ironing.
I do socks and knickers and teatowels.

ForMashGetSmash · 01/11/2010 22:59

My sister does teatowels! I can't understand it either!

I do do the sports kit though...but I wouldn't return home with it after use!

Iron Confused

I admit to ironing the odd item of clothing that really needs it just before I put it on but that's all. For my dd's final year at high school I used to wash her uniform separately and then stick it in the dryer so I didn't have to iron it Blush

FunnysInTheGardenWithASparkler · 01/11/2010 23:00

YABU, IDH ironed DS1's PE kit for the start of term

AnnieLobeseder · 01/11/2010 23:00

Yes, but would you ironing-lovers actually take an item back home out of your child's PE kit, once it had been squished up, just to iron it out again? When it's supposed to be left at school all term?

socks are taking it too far, Moondog. You need ironers anonymous. Or watch tonight's episode of Spooks on iPlayer. Grin

moondog · 01/11/2010 23:01

I know.I don't watch tv y'see so more time than most.

waterlooroadisadocumentary · 01/11/2010 23:01

I love ironing. I get immense satisfaction from a wardrobe full of freshly washed and ironed clothes. I don't iron socks but I do underwear and tea towels.

I iron the PE kit but would not ask dd to bring it home so I can iron it.

preghead · 01/11/2010 23:01

I iron my sons, crumpled clothes just look wrong to me so I have to iron them. I also iron my babys babygros and vests which even I think is ott as he usually has them on for a matter of hours before pooing on them but I can't resist

moondog · 01/11/2010 23:02

Wouldn't iron PE kit, no.

preghead · 01/11/2010 23:03

You're right tho, once it's at school and I can't see it I don't give a f@ck

SpookilyDoodleydoohoohoooooo · 01/11/2010 23:05

my mum is obsessed with ironing and she will rip the clothes off my back to iron them, so fully expect she would do this! (it has huge benefits and huge disadvantages - i.e if in the laundry basket she believes it need ironing regardless so it seems I have a never ending pile - but as it is something she can't bear to see she quite often can't help herself from doing mine!)

waterlooroadisadocumentary · 01/11/2010 23:05

But the thought of dd doing gym with her collar not sitting right concerns me. I put some starch in her collar so it stays nice for a few weeks.

I want to make clear that I do have a life, career and great sex life. I am not this dull really.

edam · 01/11/2010 23:09

moondog, I hear (from people who do iron) that one can combine watching TV and ironing. Personally I'm too afraid that I'll burn something while distracted by Kirstie and Phil or whatever, so tend to listen to the radio on the very rare occasions when I really do have to iron something.

DinahRod · 01/11/2010 23:09

Have to iron the dcs PE tshirt, for my own satisfaction. Once it's at school don't care, don't have to see it. Have also washed and ironed the other child's Tshirt dd bought home in her bag.

cheesesarnie · 01/11/2010 23:09

my mum asked ds2 if he knew what her iron and ironing bored were.he said 'yes weve got one at school, its for learning'Grin

piprabbit · 01/11/2010 23:10

Have you seen the state of 30 PE kits that have been in use for half a term?

Jumble sale doesn't cover it. It's a wonder that they manage to wear their kit right-side out and right way around, let alone with their collar sitting straight Grin.

waterlooroadisadocumentary · 01/11/2010 23:11

I watch TV while ironing, ironing is the only time when I can justify sitting down with the TV on and doing something mindless. Ironing is meditation for the busy stressed woman.

iamamug · 01/11/2010 23:12

I am an obsessive ironer and would iron the kit but no way would it come home before half term if I'd missed something.
Not that sad!

BusyMissIzzy · 01/11/2010 23:15

Ooh, strategic drying thelunar66. That's what I do too, nice to finally have a name for it :)

I only iron for job interviews, weddings or funerals.

Tryharder · 01/11/2010 23:18

I iron everything as well. Even dishcloths. If you iron them, you can fold them flat and then can be put away in the drawer neatly.

[sad bastard emoticon]

gaelicsheep · 01/11/2010 23:49

After DS I went a bit mental, I even ironed the muslin cloths Blush. After DD I got obsessed by ironing again. Is there an ironing hormone that goes mad when you have a baby?

Now I realise, finally, that there is no time in my life for ironing. Things are smoothed out off the airer and put away to press, unless they're really bad. Now if I could just persuade DH not to just chuck things in the ironing basket. If they didn't need it before, they certainly do when they've been in there for 2 weeks. Angry

Timbachick · 01/11/2010 23:58

Think I must be a bit sad too. I iron virtually everything (not towels, pants or socks). I ron DS's PE kit, his uniform, tea towels, muslins etc etc etc.

I get a bit twitchy thinking that his PE kit might be put into his bag un-ironed.
