to think this mum takes the ironing thing too far?

I don't iron. I get that some things probably should be ironed, but on the whole, I feel people iron way more than they should.

But a mum at the school gates today had me judging her a bit too obsessive. She said she'd remembered to bring her DS's PE kit (which I'd forgotten Blush), but hadn't had time to iron his PE shirt, so she would have to take it back home at the end of the day to iron it.

PE kits get left at school. The kids screw their kit up and chuck it into the bag after PE every week. So WHY did she need to iron it?

I'm baffled.... Confused

Don't you all bring the PE kit home every week to be washed and ironed?
Isn't it a bit grim after a term of being screwed up in a bag and worn to play outdoor sports?

Wouldn't have brought it home to iron that day, but always do on a Friday anyway.

gaelicsheep · 01/11/2010 23:59

I do think I will start ironing again when I don't have a demanding 4 month old to contend with.

piprabbit · 02/11/2010 00:10

PE kit is sent home for the holidays (term or half-term) - the rest of the time it lives at school.

However they are KS1, and don't do a lot of outside PE.

MollieO · 02/11/2010 00:12

Surely the games kit comes home at the end of the week not just the end of term? If ds's kit was left in school all term I wouldn't need to collect it. It would find it's way home by smell!

piprabbit · 02/11/2010 00:15

Nope - all the children run out of school after their last PE class of the half-term clutching their little yellow gym bags for washing/repairing/replacing.

I'd definitely notice if they were coming out every Friday.

ninedragons · 02/11/2010 00:30

I regard it as the zenith of my parenting that DD (2 3/4) woke up last week sobbing about her nightmare, which it transpired was about "doing ironing, Mummy" Grin

But yes, some people enjoy it, I am told.

QueenOfTheNight · 02/11/2010 00:33

As my lovely DM says 'If you're ironing pants, socks and towels then you've got too much time on your hands and need a hobby'

I agree with her. Try genealogy - it's fab! And soooo much better than ironing knickers!

ironing? Is this a new phenonema?

Niecie · 02/11/2010 00:49

I don't like ironing but I hate unironed things so it is a necessary evil.

I do iron PE kits though I wouldn't take a shirt home to iron it. I am more likely not to send it in and let DS do PE in his school top (still infants, not a sweaty teenager) until I remembered to take the ironed one in. Blush

Partly I iron because I like the way ironed clothes look and partly because unironed things take up much too much space in cupboards and wardrobes. If I didn't iron the PE kit it probably wouldn't fit in the tiny little bags they want us to use. What DS does with it when it is at school I don't want to think about but at least it all fits in when it arrives there.

Don't iron pants and socks but do iron tea towels to fit them in the drawer.

wodalingpengwin · 02/11/2010 02:51

YANBU. The woman's barking. I agree with QueenoftheNight, she badly needs a hobby.

I like ironing but that is purely because I do so little that it has a novelty factor.

wholelotofarse · 02/11/2010 03:46

Right I can't sleep and now having read this I want to do some ironing!! All mine is done but I will not start ironing our pants, unless I really really get the urge Wink

I can't understand why you would'nt wash a child's PE kit per wear? Many need deodorant past age 8 so the smell of BO would be horrid

trixie123 · 02/11/2010 07:04

the whole ironing so you can watch tv thing is absolutely true. I like ironing, b
very satisfying to get a big pile of crisp clean clothes and freshly ironed bedding is the best thing ever. I always insist on getting in the bed first if I have just put on fresh bedding.

I loathe hoovering and cleaning the bathroom if that makes me less sad Smile

tegan · 02/11/2010 07:11

I iron most things including p e kits but not as obcessively as my mum who does, towels tea towels hanky's socks pants, need i go on.

But i always iron infront of the tv. If ds is asleep i put a film on but if he is awake i tend to just have this morning or something similar on.

TheEvilDead2 · 02/11/2010 07:14

If you iron a sweaty kit, it would stink eurgh

kittywise · 02/11/2010 07:16

I rather like ironing. I do tea towels not socks though. Have an ironing press it's great. I liked ironing as a teen. Used to earn extra pennies by taking in neighbours ironing piles.
Takes all sorts.

borderslass · 02/11/2010 07:19

I actually like ironing, I quite often do it before the kids get up in the morning.

giraffescantdookforapples · 02/11/2010 07:27

I was once a nanny in a job where I had to iron the childs comforters (sheets of fabric) there was a whole drawer full of them neatly lined up. Each day for nap and sleep he would have a new one and suck it, chew it and snot it while scrunching it in his fist. All my lovely ironed work ruined in seconds. I could never see the point!

HecateQueenOfWitches · 02/11/2010 07:34

I loathe ironing.

But I do it. (clothes, not socks, pants, towels etc!)

Reason - clothes look better when they're ironed.

People who don't iron will tell you clothes don't need it, you can't tell etc - but you can tell. You can always tell.

If someone doesn't care, that's different. But they shouldn't fool themselves that you can't tell.

domesticsluttery · 02/11/2010 07:37

I iron the DC's PE kits if they look crumpled when they have been washed.

I am a bit Shock though at the fact that the kits stay in school for half a term! My DC have PE twice a week (plus hockey, football and athletics clubs after school which each need a kit) and they have a fresh kit each time. Don't they smell?

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 02/11/2010 07:43

My MIL used to iron bras!!

mousymouse · 02/11/2010 07:43

I love the term stragegic drying, thats what I do!
the only person who irons in this place is dh who has to wear shirts for work. I just don
t buy stuff that need ironing.
my mom however is obsessed. she even has a <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=www.medien-werkstatt.com/cinema/bilder/mangel.jpg&imgrefurl=www.uni-protokolle.de/foren/viewt/174424,0.html&usg=__JBdW3am0DtxYrJVNqPyE9L_mP0g=&h=400&w=400&sz=21&hl=de&start=40&zoom=1&tbnid=H5hJ030DuoGQyM:&tbnh=156&tbnw=120&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dw%25C3%25A4sche%2Bmangel%26um%3D1%26hl%3Dde%26client%3Dsafari%26sa%3DX%26rls%3Den%26biw%3D1161%26bih%3D835%26tbs%3Disch:10%2C1452&um=1&itbs=1&iact=rc&dur=504&ei=8cDPTInYFseOjAeG6JCiBg&oei=6cDPTOfYM5O7jAf42-moBg&esq=3&page=3&ndsp=20&ved=1t:429,r:13,s:40&tx=87&ty=86&biw=1161&bih=835" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">mashine in her laundry room that irons flat items like sheets or tea towels.
