Further from the shop?
The last couple of times I've been to the supermarket with children in tow I've seen

  1. A young women talking on her mobile sitting on her own in her car which was in the P&T space nearest to the shop 2)Two able-bodied, childless young women come back to their car, get in and drive off. 3)A man sitting, obviously waiting for someone to come back while two boys (8 & 10ish) sat in the back.

Meanwhile, I end up having to park in an ordinary space and struggle to get my 3 children out of the car (I would go on my own normally but DH is working 12 hours, 6 days of the week s not around to look after them).

AIBU to think that if the P&T spaces were further from the shop less people would use them who don't need them. Walking a bit doesn't bother me. Trying to get 20 month old DD into her carseat while squeezing between my car and a big van parked right on the white line(as happened the other day, I erm 'rearranged' the mirrorsGrin but that's another AIBU) does.

its the idiots in the huge penis
extension 4 wheel drive behemoths that bother me. If you cant park the fcking thing, dont buy the fcking thing.

clam · 30/10/2010 10:13

Plenty of people can't park straight, sickoftheholidays. Nothing to do with 4x4s.

DiscoDaisy · 30/10/2010 10:18

I've always found that the smaller the car is the worst the parking is.

2shoescreepingthroughblood · 30/10/2010 10:18

i think they should just do away with P&T spaces full stop

clam · 30/10/2010 10:22

Actually, I knew someone once who used to park slap-bang across the middle of two spaces so that no-one would scratch his doors. He drove a Mazda hatchback. BAN THEM!

sickoftheholidays · 30/10/2010 10:25

well to be honest, my comment applies to everyone regardless of size of car. I have never understood not being able to park a car. But then again, there are many things that others do well that I do badly.

DamselInDisgrace · 30/10/2010 10:27

I think people get annoyed with 4x4s because they are bigger so you have to be far more precise with parking. You can get away with pretty shoddy parking in a small car, but anything other than absolutely dead straight in the middle of the space is a problem in a big car. This is particularly a problem when car parks have incredibly tight spaces, which make it difficult to open the doors at all even when two medium sized cars are parked properly next to one another.

I'd prefer they got rid of p&c spaces altogether and just made the ordinary spaces wide enough for people to park and open the doors.

Tiredmumno1 · 30/10/2010 10:29

I agree, i wouldnt mind walking from the furthest point away from the shop, just to have a bit of space to get the children out.

i swear they make parking spaces smaller nowadays

WoTmania · 30/10/2010 10:34

tiredmum - I think the minimum requirement for parking space width hasn't changed in many many years but the average width for cars has carried on getting wider.

In an ideal world yes, there would be roomier parking spaces everywhere but that would take up more room.

AngelsOnHigh · 30/10/2010 10:38

Yesterday I saw an elderly couple parking in a parent and child spot, while two spots away was a disabled spot which they were perfectly able to use as they had a disabled sticker on their car, Go figure!!

huddspur · 30/10/2010 10:42

I'd get rid of Parent and Toddler spaces altogether, I don't see why having a toddler entitles you to a "special" space.

DamselInDisgrace · 30/10/2010 10:42

I don't think taking up more room would be an issue in my local tesco car park, which is never more than half full (even in the Christmas dinner madness). If they made each of the spaces a foot wider, there'd still be loads of room and they wouldn't need to provide p&c spaces. I really don't think you need an extra metre or so either side of the car to get a baby or toddler out, or some kind of special, dedicated parking area (and I have a 14 month old). Obviously they'd still need to provide proper disabled spaces

rainbowinthesky · 30/10/2010 10:43

Another here is support of getting rid of parent and child parking spaces. The amount of upset they cause here is astounding. Do you really care angelsonhigh that someone with a disabled badge used this parking spot, I mean really??

Tiredmumno1 · 30/10/2010 10:45

I suppose most cars are wider, if they dont want to make spaces bigger, because they would have less space, then i understand that.

so the easiest way would be to move the p and c further away

muminthemiddle · 30/10/2010 10:46

It will get worse at Christmas. Heaven help those that cannot find a space within 4 meters of the shop door, however will they cope with the trauma.

Tortington · 30/10/2010 10:47

they should be at the back of the car park with enough room to get a buggy down the side of the car.

also shopping trolleys should have brakes on - they used to.

Nancy66 · 30/10/2010 10:49

I also agree they should be scrapped.

PosieComeHereMyPreciousParker · 30/10/2010 10:50

P&T spaces are for people with children in car seats, young children. The spaces are wider to allow the door to be opened wide enough to get a small child in and out and strap them in. They are not for people with an older child, as you frequently see. They are also closer to the shops to reduce the amount of walking a small child has to do through a car park, which is a place of mindless and thoughtless driving. I have four children all in car seats and therefore have a seven seater....this does not fit in a normal space well enough to fit my children in and out.

janajos · 30/10/2010 11:01

You are NBU, but am I for wondering why there are so many more disabled parking spaces than spaces for Parents and Children? In the local M&S home car park there are approximately 5x as many disabled spaces as P&C ones...I am not saying that there should not be disabled spaces, but presumably there are at least as many, if not more, P with C who also need to park safely?

rainbowinthesky · 30/10/2010 11:14

It can often be nigh on impossible for someone with a disability to go shopping without a suitable parking space but it is perfectly doable to park in an ordinary space if you have children.

2shoescreepingthroughblood · 30/10/2010 11:17

oh dear there is always one idiot person who seems to think P&t spaces are as important as disables onesHmm

beobelle · 30/10/2010 11:18

You can't equate the importance of disabled spaces with P+T spaces.

Meglet · 30/10/2010 11:19

Yanbu. I always think the same thing.

All I need is to be able to open the car doors enought to get the dc's out and into a trolley, its not being close to the shop that matters. Personally I would be quite happy to be at the other end of the car park, just as long as there is the extra space allowed for the doors.

If there were some p+t spaces by the shop and some at the far end I would happily park in the ones furthest away.

rainbowinthesky · 30/10/2010 11:22

I still genuinely don't get how some people cannot manage to go shopping and get their children in and out of a car using a normal sized space. I mean do you just turn around and go home if there are no parent and child spaces?

Meow75 · 30/10/2010 11:22

There is a LAW about the proportion of spaces in a car park that HAVE to be for disabled badge holders.

That's why!!!
