We named our children almost 10 years ago and over 7 years ago.

The names we chose are now no.1 and no.2 on this years "Most common names list" or whatever they call it.

I hate being so ... so ... there's no other word for it ... COMMON!!

What are the names?

burningcakeyatthestakey · 29/10/2010 16:35

Ah, there's popular and there's common [hwink].

My DD1s name is in the top ten. I don't care because we named her after her Grandmother and it's a beautiful name.

Now my name is a different story. That really is common.

FlyingInTheCLouds · 29/10/2010 16:35

just a trendsetter...

is the new list out?

Chil1234 · 29/10/2010 16:36

YABU Apart from the obvious classroom confusion possibilities (10 kids all called Thomas etc) there's a lot to be said for having a nice, normal name and, unlike little Champignon, Germolene and K8EE they will thank you when they're older.

mumsgotatum · 29/10/2010 16:37

So what are the names...don't keep us in suspense

HalloweeseG · 29/10/2010 16:38

My ds2 is Archie, he's nearly 13 and I can't believe how "popular" his name has become. If he was born in the last 5 years I wouldn't have used it. Shame really but he likes his name.

scaleymcnamechange · 29/10/2010 16:40

Number 2 on girls list, number 1 on boys.

But these names are popular for a reason- they are presumably nice names! YABU to be upset by it. Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery and all that.

Beattiebow · 29/10/2010 16:45

oh me too. I have an Isabella. when we named her (nearly 8 years ago) it was in the 40s. Now it is often slagged off on here as being too common.

my other dcs too - their names have shot up the lists since we named them. I blame dh he wouldn't let me use the names I wanted too.

onceamai · 29/10/2010 16:48

There's a world of difference between common and popular. Ours have straight, sensible names, not top 10 but rarely far off. Their names suit them and we still like them very much the names and the dc Grin

BoysAreLikeDogs · 29/10/2010 16:49

Champignon, Germolene and K8EE

lolololo

K8EE

still snorting

KurriKurri · 29/10/2010 16:50

My DS has what I would consider a common name (Richard), but actually when he was at school (he's 25) there were never any other boys in the class with that name.

So they come in cycles I think, and a nice name is a nice name, even if lots of other people have got it.

bumperella · 29/10/2010 16:57

Took me a while to figure out K8EE there! I reckon a nice name is a grat thing to have.

slowshow · 29/10/2010 16:59

K8ee? Jesus Christ...

The registrar who allowed that should be shot.

DeadlyPoisonPassionBerry · 29/10/2010 17:00

My sister had an unusual name for years and years (she's 28), then in the last 2 years her name has shot up the charts and is now common as common. So you can't really avoid it IMO.

I have given DD a name that I love and I honestly don't care how popular it gets in years to come. I would steer clear of the TOP name for that particular year because I wouldn't want DD to have the same name as everyone else in her class but it doesn't matter if it gets super popular in the next few years as the children would be in younger school years iyswim.

megsophandemma · 29/10/2010 17:02

Now all three of my DDs name are over used, but I chose them as I think they will be nice names to have as women.

megsophandemma · 29/10/2010 17:03

My name was so overused when I was a kid, but I hardly know any other people with that name now.

BoysAreLikeDogs · 29/10/2010 17:05

K8EE sounds best in a Bianca-stylee Cockerney* bellow

*I know it's Cockney really, but Cockerney carries inferences and sterotypes that I wouldn't want to impute to Cockney speakers

borderslass · 29/10/2010 17:06

only 1 of my kids names is even in the top hundred I only know of one other boy with DS's name I know a few girls with the DD's names but not many.

minimathsmouse · 29/10/2010 17:07

When I rang the out of hrs GP service that covers kent and sussex I was asked to give my son's name. I said his first name, which she must have typed in. As I went to give the family name, the receptionist said no need, got him here! Apparently there is only one in kent and sussex. Not sure if being such a rarity will be useful later on!

kreecherlivesupstairs · 29/10/2010 17:09

Both me and DH have names that won't ever make the top 100, but, in common with scaley our DD is number two on the list. Hey ho.

ENormaSnob · 29/10/2010 17:12

My 3 have really common popular names too.

Ds1 was named before it was popular.

Dds is really popular (top 5 I think) I like it but prefer my other choice and wish i'd pushed for that.

Ds2 is top 5 too but it has strong family connotations for me.

Dh vetoed most of my name choices for ds2. Probably not a bad thing with hindsight Wink
