We named our children almost 10 years ago and over 7 years ago.

The names we chose are now no.1 and no.2 on this years "Most common names list" or whatever they call it.

I hate being so ... so ... there's no other word for it ... COMMON!!

Florence or Amelia, Eve/Evie or Grace?

80sMum · 30/10/2010 18:43

Oh, your're right! It's Grace!

fsmail · 30/10/2010 18:52

DS was named because we liked the name, there are two with the same name in his class and it is popular but it is a good name to grow old with, as we thought and there are different versions that he can use. He just happens to have the same name as Doctor Who which made him very upset at the time although he is big fan.

ZZZenAgain · 30/10/2010 18:54

lol you're a trend-setter. You just have to live with it. Dd says sometimes she wishes her name was more common because whenever you see those named trinkets, cups, magnets etc, her name is never there.

(It's not that uncommon tbh)

80sMum · 30/10/2010 19:22

My current favourite name for a girl is Maud: that's what I'd call my DD if I were having one this year. Anyone else like it?

SE13Mummy · 30/10/2010 19:23

DD1 was upset this summer on the Isle of Wight because, "my name's not posh enough to have on things to buy" Hmm. Her name is in the 70s somewhere on the baby names list but is regularly mentioned on MN as being 'very popular round here'.

Names in the top ten are there because they are popular, if either of my DDs' names join the top ten in the future it won't bother me. My youngest brother is an Oliver - born in 1982 and I didn't meet another until 1990 but times change. I don't think my parents have ever been accused of being trendsetters before now!

SpookilyDoodleydoohoohoooooo · 30/10/2010 19:44

DD is in the late 400's for her name the year she was born, my ds is in the top 10, there was a reason for his name and it wasn't to do with popularity (yes we liked it but he was named after a much loved family member!), but then with his name and our surname he could be either a rock star or a politician and get away with it so don't really care!

ilovesprouts · 30/10/2010 21:28

i was a 68 child [showing my age now]Grin and my name was popular too !!! anyone like to guess:)

PurpleCrazyHorse · 30/10/2010 21:47

DD is a Matilda and it's nice that we don't know any other children with that name. However the GPs love buying things with 'Tilly' on Hmm

It was the only name DH and I agreed on and if it becomes really popular then it doesn't matter.

SpookilyDoodleydoohoohoooooo · 30/10/2010 22:18

80sMum, love Maud, was on the list for me if we had a dd but we had ds instead. I actually think you can go a little more "quirky" with girls but not so with boys? but I could be the only one.

BTW - love Grace to but already have one in the family!

scaleymcnamechange · 30/10/2010 23:21

ilovesprouts
for you I guess Jackie, Susan, Sarah, Claire or Kate.

People always think I am aged between 4 and 10 because my name became popular in the last decade. I was the only one at school and University but now I teach and there are three in my class and 10 in my Key Stage. We are common as muck!

KristinaM · 31/10/2010 00:33

OP you could move here. We have a Thomas and he is the only one in his school of 200 pupils

KittyFoyle · 31/10/2010 00:38

My son's school has 80 pupils and 3 Toms. It's been 'common' for a few hundred years though.

RuggerHugger · 31/10/2010 00:39

My DD's name has been in the Top 10 names in Ireland for the last 10 years, however we never even looked at the list.

She is named after her maternal grandmother, great-grandmother & great-great grandmother.

I love the fact that her name is a traditional family name.

My DS also has a top10 name, again a family name on my DH's side.

Although I do get a kick out off telling people that DD insisted on him being named after a character in Madagasar.Smile

AngelsOnHigh · 31/10/2010 01:31

purplecrazyhorse get ready. I personally know 4 Matildas under 6 months.Grin

Mooos · 31/10/2010 01:41

Scaley - which spelling of Mohammed did you use?

mollycuddles · 31/10/2010 03:34

On the 2009 list ds is 9th (his name was actually 3rd the year he was born). This has never bothered him and now at school there are 3 of them sitting at the same table and he gets constant amusement from them all saying "yes" when a teacher calls out the name. Bet the teachers love that.

Dd1 is 514th but it's a Scottish name and we live in Ireland so a bit less rare locally and these lists are just England&Wales

Dd2 is 40th

The lists are interesting but I wouldn't worry about them OP.

snotsville · 31/10/2010 05:16

Well, I've just had a look at the list and discovered that DS2s name is top of the "Irksome People" list! Don't know why that would be. Personally I think he's lovely.

I wanted names for my DSs that not all the kids in the class would have, but I also wanted solid, plain, "good" names, so I had to accept that their names wouldn't be totally uncommon. I think if you choose a nice name, you've got to accept that other people will agree with you! It's probably a good thing!

Also, you've got to bear in mind that the name you choose has to go with your surname, and in some cases (like ours) that can be quite limiting.

My name isn't popular at all. I like it, and to be honest I'm quite surprised (and a little miffed) that I never hear any little girls being called it!! What's wrong with it???
