AIBU or is this unusual?

I'm not judging any one else's parenting - I am not saying my parenting style is right and others are wrong.

I took out some children for lunch, said 'Who wants to go to McDonalds?', expecting a 'Yay' for a treat, and got from one of the children 'What's Mcdonalds?'

I wouldn't of been surprised if any child ever said to me 'I'm not allowed Mcdonalds', or 'Never been to McDonalds'.

But not 'what's mcdonalds?'

AIBU to think this is unusual, or is this common, and just not for my common kids Grin

I guess I'm just not amazed that a child can get to 9 and not know what McDonalds is. And I don't think any less of her parents for it (or more).

My brother was at primary school in the 80s and he seemed to go to several McDonalds parties - I don't really hear of people having them anymore.

We eat in Burger King.

OhLuckyYou · 02/11/2010 10:38

I do find it quite strange that a 9 year old wouldn't know what McDonalds is - you can't really avoid the TV / newspaper adverts and at least one on every high street! Fair enough not to have tried it for what ever reason.

Having said that, my DS who's nearly nine came home the other day and asked me what the X Factor is - so maybe it is possible to remain immune to the advertisers! Smile

Who's arguing "against having DCs who 'fit in'" pisces? I'm just arguing against having to introduce them to McD's in order to do so.

ZephirineDrouhin · 02/11/2010 14:45

(Agree with paisley about TV adverts - can't remember the last time I saw one either. That probably means there is a whole load of TV dd is missing out on too which will have a diastrous effect on her social life...)

ZephirineDrouhin · 02/11/2010 14:48

Or maybe even disastrous

piscesmoon · 02/11/2010 16:04

Quite honestly I have forgotten what we are arguing about ,ZD! So probably time to stop.
I think that a 9yr old ought to know-if only as general knowledge.

ZephirineDrouhin · 02/11/2010 16:12

Clearly

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 02/11/2010 18:30

Anyway, Burger King is better.
