at what age does the bedroom monitor become a bit invasive/ cotton walled?
shes 1 1/2, sleeps all night and is only in the next room, but i just cant seem to say goodbye to the monitor.

dunno, never really used one, mine cry loud enough to wake the dead lol

MiasmARGGG · 28/10/2010 14:47

I still use mine for ds and he's almost 2. I used it for dd till she was about 2.5.

It's an angel care and I still use the pressure mat too.

If you want to use it then do, it's not harming anyone and you dc wont care :)

Might not go down so well at 11 though :)

Fryib · 28/10/2010 14:50

we still use ours and DS is 3.3!
but the house is big, and we keep the living room door closed to stop the draughs so wouldnt hear him if he called out.
when we go to bed I turn it off as we are in the next room so can hear him.
Will always have to take my DD monitor as shes at the other end of the house, and no chance of hearing her!!

Fryib · 28/10/2010 14:51

oh yeah ,YANBU!!

badcoverversion · 28/10/2010 14:54

We still use an audio monitor for our 2.5 year old...but purely because if we don't hear him stir he is down the stairs and up on the couch between us faster than a fucking whippet...

Last time this happened me and OH were playing Lips on the xbox and eating kettle chips...suffice to say the DS was there till the wee small hours polishing off the savoury snacks and belting out CCR and Devo.

If it reassures you then I don't think YABU...now those video monitors on the other hand, they give me the creepy creeps.

kitbit · 28/10/2010 14:54

Used ours until about 4. He used to wake up a lot and it saved him bellowing to know that he could just speak and we'd hear him.

specialmagiclady · 28/10/2010 14:56

I used mine til about 2.

PutTheKettleOn · 28/10/2010 14:56

we stopped using ours when we moved house - DD used to be on a different floor but now she is right next door. She was 18 months at the time, and we all got a better night's sleep without it!

quechelle · 28/10/2010 14:57

DS is 3 and a half years, and we still use ours.

My Mum and Dad are very sniffy about it, and often say "We always heard you. We just sensed it".

The thing is, they didn't. I have really awful memories of being terrified in the dark and no-one coming.

I'll be using mine until DS is ready for me to stop.

I don't want to hurt my parents' feelings by enlightening them, but if they are sniffy again maybe I will.

So YANBU imo.

zingzillachinchilla · 28/10/2010 14:57

We use ours when DD (17mo) is in bed upstairs and we are downstairs, but switch it off when we got to bed. When we go to bed, I pop in to check on her, and leave her door and our door ajar, so we can hear her. She can certainly make herself heard - no doubt about that!!

I don't think YABU

HeadFairy · 28/10/2010 14:58

Used mine with ds until he was about 2.8, he rarely wakes up, but when he does I'm in there faster than a flash to shove his bunny at him (he sucks the ears) and he goes right back to sleep. Now I just hear the thunder of his feet as he runs down to our room to climb in to our bed!

hellphireblue · 28/10/2010 15:00

We don't use it because our house is small enough for us to hear if one of them wakes. If they weren't in ear shot though we would use monitors (they are 2.8 and 9 months).

BuntyPenfold · 28/10/2010 15:05

Still use at 3 1/2, as his bedroom door is shut to prevent the cats from joining him.

It's nice when we've said goodnight, to hear him quietly telling stories to Piggle Piggle.

LightlyKilledCrunchyFrog · 28/10/2010 15:51

I've never had one. Blush But DS2 sleeps in my bed, so don't need it at night, and he generally hangs out downstairs until bed time anyway.

justabit · 28/10/2010 16:03

like many of these questions the answer has to be when it is right for you. I kept mine on till he was about two but I have slept so much better since I put it away.

carocaro · 28/10/2010 17:29

I still use for for Ds1 aged 8 and DS2 aged 3, it's downstairs and I can tell if they are playing DS's or up chatting or faffing about, otherwise I can't hear them when I am downstairs and I like too!

DH thinks I am nuts, but it makes me feel better to be able to hear them if they need me!

It is because I live in a huge mansion with hundreds of rooms! NOT.

woopsidaisy · 28/10/2010 17:44

OMG,I still use it for DS1,6,and DS2 3! They would still occasionally wake at night, and don't get up on their own in the morning either. They call me,and I would be worried I wouldn't hear them. But I do live in quite a large house.

Horton · 28/10/2010 17:44

DD is 4 and I still use ours if I'm downstairs and she's upstairs asleep as she's never been one to make much of a noise about anything so I know I wouldn't know if she woke up and was scared of the dark or something. I know, I'm soft. I don't bother to have it on when I'm in bed as she is right next door.

It's also quite handy for when we have children round to play as we leave it on so the adults can hear any arguments going on when the kids are upstairs and out of earshot and head them off at the pass before anyone gets cross enough to start shouting or hitting etc. Having said that, DD is now four and she and her friends are much less prone to sudden irrational arguments so probably we could stop bothering with that soon.

canyou · 28/10/2010 18:57

I just bought a new monitor for whomever is doing night time care for my 98 yr old grandmother as I could not part with the one I have at home for dd [17 months] which everyone thought should now be redundant.

Lotster · 28/10/2010 19:05

My daughter is 20 months, we use ours when watching TV (I'm quite cloth eared and like it loud!) but turn it off when we go to bed. Just leave our door open a bit.

Think at this stage as long as you can hear them cry you don't need to hear them breathe. Unles they're poorly, in which case I take a monitor to bed so I can hear clearly if they've vomited etc.

FeedjoToTheMummies · 28/10/2010 19:08

use it until he's 10 if you like, it's your life! Smile

FeedjoToTheMummies · 28/10/2010 19:08

or even SHE, didn't read properly Blush

pozzled · 28/10/2010 19:11

DD is 2.3, we still use a monitor because our bedroom is on a different floor from hers- we would really struggle to hear her without it. I won't get rid of it until I'm happy that she could come to us if she had a problem in the night, and I suspect that won't be for a while yet.
