In previous years we have either been out/not answered the door/not had any, so I have no idea what they will be expecting!

So do I need to go and buy sweets/chocolate etc or are we supposed to give them cash these days (which is what my mum thinks is the case!)

sparkle it's usually the 14/15 year olds ime that ask for money. When I was that age, some of the horrible chavvy boys from my school used to roam the estate-type thing we lived in on Hallowe'en and knock on people's doors looking threatening and asking for money Hmm
They only ever had one of those cheapy scream masks or something, too!

They almost died when I opened the door to them dressed as Lurch (complete with "You raaaaaaang?"! [hgrin]). Most of them nabbed some sweets from the bowl I was holding AND had the cheek to ask for money on top! They only got halfway through their little ditty about how Christmas is coming before I told them to eff off or I'd tell their girlfriends that they were trick or treating for cash!
[evil emoticon]

Surprisingly, they didn't come back the next year ...

Back on topic, those multibags of mini chocolate bars usually go down well. Most parents don't like homemade chocolate in case you're trying to drug/poison/kill their little darlings Hmm

Absolutely laughing my arse off at CerealOffender [hgrin]

I won't be here this halloween, going to an adults fancy dress party [hgrin] [big kid] but I usually just grab a big bag of Haribo, some mini choccy bars, lollipops etc, chuck 'em all in a bowl and let them tuck in. Once 8pm comes, the doorbell is turned off, lights get dimmed, and I sit and munch the leftovers.

LadyThumb · 28/10/2010 15:42

Some lollies on sticks, and lots of Witches Fingers (additive-free Freeze Pops).

SleepWhenImDead · 28/10/2010 15:43

Nothing, I hate the practice and just gives thugs round here an excuse to go around and intimidate people. We'll be pretending we're out.

Dylthan · 28/10/2010 15:44

Yes I think so bunty there nuts in shells. Was watching dumbo today and it's like the nuts they have there Smile

they don't taste great I suppose because there unsalted but I used to love the novelty of cracking the shell open to eat the nut. I guess kids these days are not as easily amused as I was Blush

aendr · 28/10/2010 15:45

Glow bracelets, they can pick one of 5 colours.

Haribo or similar

HecateQueenOfWitches · 28/10/2010 15:52

sweets and balloons.

except this year we are pig sick of it so we are going to go out for a meal.

Heifer · 28/10/2010 15:53

The Cold Shoulder...

I won't be answering the door this year. In fact our door bell is missing so I won't hear them anyway, even better.

I'm not usually so meanspirited (well actually I am, but since having DD (6) I usually do make an effort. But I am ill with a cold and don't feel like even getting dressed let alone going out to buy sweets)

DD is going to a party earlier in the day, so will at least get to have some fun.

GoreRenewed · 28/10/2010 16:13

Ooh please come bunty! Grin I have chocolate and wine

thisiswhataluv · 28/10/2010 16:18

i never give money, dont think many people do these days, however when i was little we always got money...
i make up little bage [cheapy sandwich bag style] and fill them with sweets and lollys etc, never unwrapped sweets though as i wouldnt like my dcs to be given these as you dont know whos touched them lol

IvantaOuiOui · 28/10/2010 16:29

I have spent a whole £2 on Tesco value lollies, toffees, midget gems and foamy sweets, which all go in a bowl. As local ageing gothmum I do get a lot of creepy visitors at Halloween.

freyjasauntie · 28/10/2010 16:35

As a practicing pagan I hold a Samhain/Halloween party at my house every year. I have always bought sweets for the few trick and treaters that come, but this year will be getting stickers, pencils, little things like that. I always have a carved pumpkin with a candle in it outside which is my invitation to the trick and treaters to come and knock!

laweaselmys · 28/10/2010 16:36

Wrapped sweets/choc is best.

This year I'm doing a choice of glow bracelet or chocolate buttons.

onceamai · 28/10/2010 16:37

Don't want to be a spoil sport but Halloween falls on a Sunday this year and there I draw the line. There will not be a pumpkin lantern this year and I hope nobody calls.

PaulineMole · 28/10/2010 16:41

maoms
swizzles selection bag
sainsbury's fun-size mars copies

no money. when it's gone, it's gone, and the jack o'lantern comes in.

I like everything to be individually sealed, so that I can eat the leftovers without fretting about strange kids' mucky paws.

LucyGoose · 28/10/2010 16:42

I live in an apartment building and we have very few children here, so hopefully none will come knocking.

nattiecake · 28/10/2010 16:53

I'm putting a sign on the door...

Newborn sleeping, bugger off

Grin
HappyMummyOfOne · 28/10/2010 17:05

Various halloween themed sweets with a few others thrown in, I usually make up small bags. Always wrapped sweets though as I know lots of parents dont like their children eating unwrapped foods from strangers.

DooinMeCleanin · 28/10/2010 17:07

Funsized what ever is on offfer at the co-op is what we usually give.

hellphireblue · 28/10/2010 17:19

Definitely like the tesco value idea!

I just hope DDs don't spot the sweets and eat them all first!

I'm also going to put a sign on the door which says "knackered mummy in residence will be asleep by 9pm so bugger off if it's later than this!"

We have a tub of Halloween Haribo (half price!) which has some bags with orange and black pumpkins, bats etc. and some which are shaped like magic things (I have no idea what, they just looked like blobs to me [hwink]).

Oh and some little chocolates, because I hated Haribo, so I know how they'd feel. I'm very considerate Smile. But, yes, after nine the pumpkin is blown out.

Hulababy · 28/10/2010 17:29

I have a tub of sweets that we are still working our way through since DD's party in April! We ended up with 2 tubs - 3.5kg each, and we now have half of one tub left. There are little packs of refreshers, parma violets, love hearts, etc and some lollies and chews and hard boiled sweets. They can have one of them.

No way are they getting cash!
