Unfortunately I am miscarrying at the moment and today have passed some worrying clots. After failing to get through to the midwives or the nurse at our doctors, I called NHS Direct.

I started to give my details and a graphic explanation of what had happened with regard to the size and colour of the clots when a squeaky little voice at the end of the line said 'er, did you mean to call First Direct?'. BlushBlush

I am so embarrassed - I always get those two phone numbers mixed up and had even gone all the way through their security questions on auto-pilot!

Oh you poor thing!!!

MassiveKnob · 26/10/2010 16:17

Shock Sad hope you ok.

Onetoomanycornettos · 26/10/2010 16:20

Sorry, you did make me laugh, even though the circumstances aren't funny in the slightest.

Mumwithadragontattoo · 26/10/2010 16:21

Oh poor you - please don't be embarrassed. FD is just an anonymous call centre and no one is going to make a note of your conversation. I am very sorry to hear about your miscarriage too :( - I hope you are OK.

PercyPigPie · 26/10/2010 16:23

Thank you all. I'm afraid I found it funny too, as did my DH who stood in the door, mouth agape, disbelievingly.

sorry your miscarrying and even more sorry for PMSL at your thread. Blush

Hope your feeling better soon.

SlaughteredSheep · 26/10/2010 16:30

Oh you poor thing! I'm so sorry that you're going through this. Don't be embarrassed though, as another poster said, it will just be an anonymous call centre and they won't have taken any details. Even if they took your name they will have just taken it off the computer once they realised that you didn't mean to call them. I'm sure that the operator has a heart and they would just have felt bad that they weren't able to help in your time of need.

LynetteScavo · 26/10/2010 16:34

Oh, bless! If it makes you feel any better, I did something similar. I got through to the hospital, but the phone was answered by a security guard on main reception (brand new hospital, not yet properly staffed). Little did I know I was giving some poor old bloke far TMI. I was so Sad and Angry and Blush about it when he said "I'll put you through to maternity".

taintedpaint · 26/10/2010 17:06

Oh, firstly I'm so sorry for your loss. :(

Secondly, I really hope this little giggle will help you and your DH at the moment, any humour is good in a situation like this. I had a shameful little laugh and I feel quite awful, but pleased you were able to laugh too!

PercyPigPie · 26/10/2010 17:10

Please don't feel bad Taintedpaint - I posted it because I thought it was funny!

lollipopshoes · 26/10/2010 17:12

were they in any way helpful?

And did you get through to NHS direct in the end, are you ok?

PercyPigPie · 26/10/2010 17:14

Lynette - that's really funny too! At least it was only on the phone.

I've also remembered that once, many years ago, I was being seen by a rather nice doctor re a knee operation. I was convinced that he had said I needed to take all my clothes off and did so. Luckily the nurse came into the cubicle before he did, looked at me in horror and said 'he only asked you to roll up your jeans'!

PercyPigPie · 26/10/2010 17:15

No Lollipop, they didn't have any particularly good advice - not sure I would recommend them to be honest Grin

I worked in a bank once, and my colleague rang another branch about something, but thought it was the beauticans she rang and said "This is XXXX XXXX, I want to book in for a bikini wax on Tuesday please". The person on the other end said "Eh, XXXX I think you have the wrong number, this is XXXX branch". I can still see her dropping the phone and the horror on her scarlet face. Sorry to hear you are going through such a tough time xxx

EricNorthmansMistress · 26/10/2010 18:19

Oh you poor poor silly thing. Yes you will need to change bank now Blush

kidding, it was silly and a bit funny but not surprising you are all over the place a bit :(

deathjeff · 26/10/2010 20:28

I used to work for them and it really did happen all the time, especially on the night shift. It could be quite harrowing.

But don't worry, it's all in a days work so no need to switch!

Sorry about your news though :(

HabbiBOOOO · 26/10/2010 20:29

Oh, poor you! It is funny, though - glad you've got something to laugh about atm...

kitchenroll · 26/10/2010 20:36

name changing regular here

I work at first direct and used to be on the phones taking customer calls, and I know they'll treat this very professionally, so please don't worry

I have dealt with some very very strange calls in my time so this sort of thing is par for the course

kitchenroll · 26/10/2010 20:38

small world isn't it? Grin

redflag · 26/10/2010 20:47

Oh you poor thing, I am a former First direct employee, and trust me that wont have been the strangest call they had that day.I can assure you.

dementedma · 26/10/2010 20:48

first direct deserve all they get - they were awful to us when we got into temporaray financial difficulties, couldn't have cared less.

redflag · 26/10/2010 20:53

dementedma, i am very sorry to hear that they were not helpful to you. They do pride themselves on customer service. I am sorry to hear they were not good to you.

lenak · 26/10/2010 21:00

This happens to me all of the time at work - my direct dial number is very very similar to one of the local doctors surgeries.

People often launch into quite personal details about blood and smear tests or what they want to make appointments for before I get chance to say "Were you after the doctors?".

Sorry for you loss.

dementedma · 26/10/2010 21:06

redflag - I'm sure you did a good job there, but we got into financial difficulties and they were - and ARE - the only creditor who refused to let us reduce payments, freeze interest or do anything to help. When I pleaded tearfully on the phone that we would be put out on the street if the mortgage payment defaulted the guy on the phone said "well, that's not my fault!"
At one point we had reduced the amount we owed them to £500 and had a small windfall of £450. I wrote to them and asked if they would accept this as full payment in order to clear the debt, avoid court action etc and they refused it. They were really agressive about pursuing a minimal debt.

redflag · 26/10/2010 21:24

I am so sorry to hear that, i tried my best. He actually should have given you a full explanation, as apposed to "its not my fault" When you pick up the phone at first direct you are the face of the company, there fore it was his fault!
Its a big shame.
I must say i don't bank with them any longer either.
