Thanks to MN, especially dittany, Lenin, BoF and Anyfucker, I have been made aware of my casual attitude to misogyny. This short journey in my reclaiming my old values recently lead me to the London Feminist Network Conference on Saturday. And Oh my God it is one of the most inspirational things I've ever done.

Having money and being relatively attractive in my younger days I was mislead into thinking that being a feminist was irrelevant, after all we had a female PM and then 'girl power' where we were fooled into thinking with the right body shape and a little wit the world was our oyster (farm).

My husband's and friends' response to my recent activities have ranged from being mystified to mockery, from resentment to full on stereotypical prejudice. I am alarmed that barely any of my friends think feminism is relevant.

Am I being unreasonable to reclaim the word feminist to mean a person that wants to rid the world of gender prejudiced?

'Deride and trash' -- Do you think any post that disagrees with yours is necessarily derision? It is possible to have someone disagree with you without suspecting you are being derided and your opinions trashed. It's called debate.

Why do you mention conspiracy?

indeed, given we have polarised pov i would expect you to say nowt different.and of course thats fair enough and valid.lets face it,im unlikely to change pov because of some words on a mn screen. but the discussion in itself is imo purposeful as there is participation, exchange of views and that a good thing

a self-congratulatory oh you are so right thread is a dull mn thread.and they never get the posts or sustain over few days

Are you saying feminism doesn't stand up to the real life reality standard?

Because it strikes me that XYZ brand of foundation needs real life reality testing and that feminism emerged from the 'real life reality' experiences of millions of women.

scottishmummy · 28/10/2010 19:23

only a problem if you consider it so.your subjective pov is valid but i dont have to concur

scottishmummy · 28/10/2010 19:24

i was asked if mn changes my opinions and i said i generally reality test opinions

So do you think feminism might stand up to the reality test you have in mind?

scottishmummy · 28/10/2010 19:29

everyone reality tests, and formulates opinions is how we safely develop and grow.mediation between external and internal world.to have arrived at opinion or hold range and depth of opinion all of you have reality tested

scottishmummy · 28/10/2010 19:32

reality resting is unique and individual to each person. so my reality test of any situation or ideology wont be same as yours

mathanxiety · 28/10/2010 19:33

And in order to have arrived at whatever opinion you have of feminism you have presumably also reality tested, and your result is.... ?

scottishmummy · 28/10/2010 19:34

individual and unique to me

if someone with capacity has arrived at a decision by cognitive processing and reason that their fair enough. and we as humans are social animals and like to associate with like-minded people and form communities

and of course any ideology, behaviour is open to scrutiny
