Why on earth do schools make girls wear ties?

YABU. Loved my tie and actually taught DH how to tie a proper Windsor knot.

IME, here in the US public system, not wearing uniforms is far worse for girls. They end up obsessed with what to wear to school and it's very indicative of how much money the parents have.

musicmadness · 23/10/2010 19:38

Never wore ties at scool, and I'm not sure how to tie them properly TBH. Personally I think they look daft on both genders so would support getting rid of them all together.

sapphireblwhooooo · 23/10/2010 19:38

I had to wear a tie to school and wasn't bothered, I was bothered that i wasn't allowed to wear trousers though.

curlymama · 23/10/2010 19:40

I liked my tie at school. It gave me something to pick the threads out of when I was bored in lessons.

SoMuchToBats · 23/10/2010 19:43

YANBU - if the girls have to wear ties, then the boys should have to wear skirts. That would not be sexist.

Rhian82 · 23/10/2010 19:43

I think ties are ridiculous things, full stop. Pointless in adult men, and even more pointless in children.

It's also very ridiculous that girls have to wear them when women don't. But it would be sexist to not make them when the boys have to, so I think they're stuck with it unless a school is sensible enough to not make anyone wear them.

(I may be slightly biased by the fact that I work in a completely casual office and all the men wear jeans and t-shirts)

HEXentricaGallumbits · 23/10/2010 19:44

i do like a cravatte though

SoMuchToBats · 23/10/2010 19:46

And FWIW I had to wear a tie at secondary school and hated it. I still hate having to wear a bow tie (and hideous male-shaped band jacket) for band concerts. These things have obviously only been designed for men.

I'm all for unisex stuff (e.g. trousers for both sexes) but ties are something that adult women hardly ever wear, and skirts are something that adult men hardly ever wear.

Mumcentreplus · 23/10/2010 19:50

Grin carvats are only permitted with a morning suit (weddings),on dodgy eccentric arty types or sad older men who think they are distinguished and sexy ...

notagrannyyet · 23/10/2010 19:57

I think ties look awful on teenage girls, especially 'bigger' girls. Even the private girls school in our nearest town doesn't include ties in the uniform. As others have said women don't wear ties so why should teenage girls.

YAB massively U; neither should have to wear ties.

At my school they've just introduced clip on ties for the Y7s and now it's the favoured sport amongst older kids to run down the corridor and see how many clip ons they can whip from Y7's necks (which secretly makes meGrin a bit although officially I am vvvAngry)

LetThereBeRock · 23/10/2010 20:10

I don't like ties for schoolchildren of either sex.

I love a man in a tie, they look scruffy without. And I wore ties through school and never batted an eyelid at them. DD's future school has them too and I'm glad :) They have a very strict uniform policy which beats hoards of scruffy schoolchildren in logo'd polo shirts any day.

Mumcentreplus · 23/10/2010 20:17

'especially 'bigger'' girls...hope you are not saying fat girls look bad in ties Grin

Mumcentreplus · 23/10/2010 20:19

I really don't see what the big deal is...they are not expecting your DDs to wear belly-tops and thongs are they?..

Eglu · 23/10/2010 20:32

maryz, that was my thought when I said girls would push boundaries in other ways. I think a tie is the lesser of two evils in those circumstances.

stleger · 23/10/2010 20:51

My dds have a compulsory pullover so the visible bra isn't a problem. They have compulsory ties, which are knotted very low, so can't be seen lurking below the pullover. The girls can choose trousers or skirt (one style of each, both fairly nasty). If the girls wear trousers, grey socks are compulsory, leading to sock inspections; boys are not subject to sock inspection. The trauma!

SoMuchToBats · 23/10/2010 20:57

A compulsory pullover? Even when it's boiling hot?

autodidact · 23/10/2010 21:06

I would rather died than worn a tie as a teenager. Bad enough getting used to the fact that I suddenly had enormous breasts without having to worry about a tie drawing further attention to them. Ties and curves are an utterly ridiculous mix- you are definitely not being unreasonable.

autodidact · 23/10/2010 21:07

have died, even

toddlerama · 23/10/2010 21:08

Grown women don't wear ties. It's weird to make teenage girls wear them. I hated wearing a tie for school. My first secondary school had a striped blouse (which of course, I didn't like when I had to wear it), but my second one had a shirt and tie combo which made us look so masculine. Yuk.

Mumcentreplus · 23/10/2010 21:11

are they grown women?...its part of a uniform...all teenagers hate uniform...what's the big deal?...they can use their imagination with said tie...
