I am the only at the school gate to not of put my heating on yet. We had new cavity wall and loft insulation installed last year and at present our house is lovely and warm so have no need for heating.
Obviously if the weather is getting colder then i will have to at some pont but as yet there is no need.

YANBU We have only just turned one of our storage heaters on and that's just because we have a damp problem in the room and we've had a lot of rain recently.

sounds excellent tegan. How simple was the cavity insulation to put in? (and can I ask what sort of cost if you don't mind a rude question)

gillybean2 · 22/10/2010 09:07

I try to aviod putting mine on before the end of October as I can't afford it. But so cold now I had to put it on this week.

I have storage heaters and brick walls in an ancient and drafty old house.

And so the nagging my ds to shut the damn front door everytime he nips round the neighbours starts.

Indith · 22/10/2010 09:16

Ghostie ring the energy saving trust. They can tell you what grant/subsidised schemes there are in your area and sort out someone to come round and have a look, talk through your insullation options and give you a quote.

Ours has been on for a while, sort of. We have a solid fuel system whcih also heats our water so as soon as it gets a little cooler we go back to using the fire to heat the water which has the added advantage of warming teh downstairs and teh dc's room.

tegan · 22/10/2010 12:12

Ghosty, it cost £300 because we had a grant for the rest. We had holes drilled into the outside of the house and they pumped polystyrene balls into the cavity and also put really thick insulation in the loft, 20cm i think it was, but now we can't use it for storage.

We had insulation put in last winter and we have had our heating back on for a month. I would be freezing if we hadn't put our heating on by now. Don't know how people do it but then again, I really feel the cold.

mychildrenarebarmy · 22/10/2010 12:40

OhYouBadBadGhostie Cavity wall insulation is really simple to have installed. There are lots of grants around to pay part/all of the cost depending on your circumstances. Check with the energy saving trust, your gas/elec company and even your local council as all 3 options might have involvement in a deal on it. We are lovely and toasty here having over the last 3 years had the central heating updated, new windows/doors, the walls filled and the loft insulated. It's a lovely change from before when we had gappy windows, unfilled walls and loft and a grumpy heating system that worked IF it felt like it before sending the heat out through the walls/doors.

Sassybeast · 22/10/2010 12:41

If you don't need your heating, don't put in on. I've seen a few threads about 'not putting heating on yet' - I wasn't aware that it was a measure of super powers ? Hmm I've had my heating on for a few weeks. I'll deal with running out of money to pay for it when it happens. Am I supposed to throw myself in awe at the feet on those who are well 'ard ? I am honestly bewildered at these types of thread.

mousymouse · 22/10/2010 12:43

we have the heating on for 2 weeks now because of the damp. washing just doesn*t dry.

FlumpetMum · 22/10/2010 12:44

I do not know what you expect us to say? If you are not cold, do not put it on, it is not a universal time when everyone has to put it on. Lord, the threads on here get worse every minute!

HeadFairy · 22/10/2010 12:45

We have our heating on in the morning and evening when the nanny is around, otherwise I only have it on for an hour when the children are having their bath, once they're in bed I switch it off again. Our gas bill went up to £200 a month because of last winter so we're being super mean this winter.

OhYouBadBadGhostie · 22/10/2010 12:46

I am definitely going to get it sorted then. We have done the loft ourselves and put in a new boiler. Makes sense to finish the job properly.

mangoandlime · 22/10/2010 12:50

YANBU. But what do y'want, a medal? Grin

tegan · 22/10/2010 13:00

no medal required, but i am slightly proud that i am saving a bit of money.

Also dd1 said dd2's friend wasn't allowed over because we don't have the heating on and the precious child might freeze to death if in my house for any length of time

I have just submitted an application for a grant through the energysaving trust, so thank you tegan for prompting me to get my bum in gear about this.

mumeeee · 22/10/2010 13:21

YANBU. We haven't put our heating on yet and won't do until November which is only just over a week ago. Well we really don't need it on next week as we are in Tenerife [smil]

LynLiesNomoreZombieFest · 22/10/2010 13:21

I haven't got my heating on, and the windows are open. I am never cold.

I have a lot of padding.

When it gets cold I might run up and down both flights of stairs see if I can burn it up.

mumeeee · 22/10/2010 13:21

I was trying to do a smiley. Smile

emptyshell · 22/10/2010 14:10

Ours has been on off and on since near the start of September - I hate being cold (mainly just for a day here and there to whack the base temperature of the house up a touch). It's only on for an hour or so before we wake up to numb the pain of being brutally evicted from my duvet, and from about 5-9 at night.

Hubby's usually the one who sticks the heating on though - I tend to put another jumper on, I think he only owns one jumper... but he works for the evil energy company anyway so I can't mutter too loudly since it pays the mortgage!

Hands getting cold in the house during the daytime when I never put the heating on for just me - got an old patchwork quilt that stays on the sofa to curl up underneath.

Going to be fun when we move though - got double glazing, but there are two windows in the house that are still single-glazed, one's completely shot to hell and needs replacing on the landing, but one's octagonal in the bedroom and I'm not giving up my little porthole!
