That some people are smug about odd things?

General thread, not directed at anyone but perhaps inspired by a few recent threads [and my mum]

What odd things have you heard people be all smug about. When my dear mum is about to be oddly smug her voice gets really loud and she puts on a weird posh voice [bless her]

The sentence almost always starts with 'of course'

i.e. 'of course we never watch Coronation Street' Now why on earth would you think that was something to be smug about particularly as [at the time] she did watch Treasure Hunt [v.camp and odd game with Aneeka whatshername]

TV often comes into this sort of thing. NOT having a tv at all is often smugged about [not everyone who doesnt have a tv is like this obviously and this is not a thread to attack non tv watchers honest )

Heard any good ones lately?

I find it weird that people on here hate asda. I live in tesco town with no asda and people are unbelievable smug that they travel miles to our nearest asda and show off how much they've saved.

I'm sure the cost of petrol won't make up for the savings though Hmm

Jux · 22/10/2010 09:44

I did feel very smug that I had to ask on a KK thread some time ago, who on earth she was Grin

There are quite a few slebs I've never heard of or only seen in passing. I think I'm a bit smug about that too.

SarahStratton · 22/10/2010 09:59

I don't understand the smug Asda thing either. Being smug about not going to Tescos, now that I could undestand.

I would like to be smug about dust free radiators and dog-fairyhair-less floors but I'm far too lazy to manage it.

I am smug that my taps shine (that is actually all I can think of).

Quenelle · 22/10/2010 10:10

I think every parent should be allowed to be smug about one aspect of their child-rearing, just so they can feel less shit about the crap stuff. (I know - I'm taking the credit for the successes but the failures were not my fault Hmm.) For example, DS was a rubbish sleeper for a long time, rarely sleeps past 5am and never napped in his cot. But he took to BLW easily and has a wide and varied diet. Can I have that please? And if your LO slept through at a week old and always has to be woken at 7.30am but won't give up the dummy at 6 years old you can have that one.

Deal?

Anniegetyourgun · 22/10/2010 10:15

I don't watch TV. I can't be smug about it though, because the reason is I've never got around to having the aerial fixed since we moved in two years ago - so it's actually down to laziness. Instead of wasting my life slumped in front of the telly, I waste it slumped in front of the PC. Big moral difference there Hmm (Er well the computer's interactive, so I'm, er, doing something innit...)

Can't say I've missed it a lot though. And I definitely can't tell you the latest plot of yer average soap opera, except that someone is no doubt sleeping with someone they shouldn't and someone else has just announced, in some terribly inappropriate place like the pub or the laundrette or a relative's wedding party, that they've been diagnosed with a terminal illness. Possibly this person's spouse is one of the parties in the aforementioned affair. If that isn't the current plot of at least two soaps, it soon will be.

Guess I am smug after all then.

Booboodebat · 22/10/2010 10:34

My Dad is very smug about getting up early. When I complained this summer about DS getting up at 5:30am every morning, he smugly smugged at me about it.

So then they had DS for the weekend.

Hah!

Think he finally got the distinction between 'rising serenely at 5:30am to a nice cup of tea and radio 4' and 'having a solid child jumping on your head at 5:30am and not being able to have a moment to yourself until they fall asleep at 7pm'.

Not so smug now, eh?

Eh?

loveulotslikejellytots · 22/10/2010 10:42

I am also smug about my hair. It is lovely a thick and shiny. And up until a few weeks ago was down to my bum.

I am also smug that after being told that I would never amount to anything (left school at 17 no A levels!) that I moved out of home, got a house and a mortgage with DH, planned and paid for (the majority)of our wedding all by ourselves, have found my self a full time job that I love (although I would like better wages)and haven't had to go running back to mummy and daddy like everyone said I would. It also helps that my 2 brother still live at home, earn the same as what I do, and are constantly sponging off Mum and Dad!

jonesy71 · 22/10/2010 10:50

my sister-in-law is smug that my nephew 'only likes' water to drink, and will 'choose' grapes over chocolate

I am quietly smug that unlike her son, mine at a year younger goes to bed without fuss, stays there all night and doesn't need a nappy at night.

I am smug that I get the better deal.

thefirstmrsDeVeerie · 22/10/2010 11:18

What about people that are smug about being bigoted?

'Well if thinking blah blah makes me racist/sexist/a snob, well I am sorry but I AM!'

Said in such a way as to invite you to comment 'jolly well done for sticking to your principles'

Instead of 'shut your trap you rancid old twat'

Friend of mine v smug about having a little girl after two boys, when I've stopped at the two boys. She says things like "I feel as if I've joined a special club"....okay I do sometimes have urges for a little pink person in the house but I don't need it ramming down my throat!

SlaughteredSheep · 22/10/2010 15:55

I'm smug about the fact that at 27 years old I haven't got any fillings! See [hgrin]!

chefswife · 22/10/2010 16:35

OhYa!!! I'm also smug about having no cavities.

There's some very funny smuggness on this thread.

pickledbabe · 22/10/2010 17:22

i can't think of anything to be smug about.

I could be smug about having my own business, but it's crippling me financially and I'm having sleepless nights about where the hell the water's dripping through in the roof.

ooh, I know! I'll be smug about the fact that I've found myself a marvellous man who treats me like royalty. [hgrin]

ExtraordinarySandwiches · 22/10/2010 18:59

I'm not smug, just mildly disgusted at my continuing low standards of cleanliness, tidiness, parenting, jobseeking etc.

I was smug about my 20/20 eyesight until I visited Specsavers the other day and they said I'd need glasses in a year or two! I was also smug about my good hearing until Autumnwatch the other day when they played high frequency animal sounds that I couldn't hear. I still have good teeth!

jacksmomma · 22/10/2010 19:07

I'm smug about having a really really good birth but only because the witches at work told
me so many horror stories that I spent nine months absolutely dreading the birth

chipmonkey · 22/10/2010 19:55

I was very smug the other day when ds4 ate some hummus and loved it.

I tried to forget that my first 3 wouldn't have eaten hummus if it was the last food left on earth.

MintyMoo · 22/10/2010 20:29

Slaughtered - I'm smug about being in my twenties and having no fillings too! Especially as I drink tea with two large sugars and constantly get 'ooh bet you've got lots of fillings though' type comments. I love replying that I have no fillings, and that when I was 17 my orthodontist said I had some of the healthiest teeth he'd seen, especially for someone with such crooked teeth and I have unusually thick tooth enamel.

I'm also smug about the fact that I didn't chicken out of train tracks at 17 when all my friends said it'd be social suicide. They were in only 11 months and I have lovely straight, filling free teeth now, whereas all those friends have crooked teeth and regret not opting for braces themselves. Almost all of them have fillings and have had root canals and we're still under 25. I love my teeth :)

Jellykat · 22/10/2010 20:56

Im smug about my teeth too!-They're still in my mouth!

This is despite a dentist telling me in my youth, they'd all fall out by the time i was 30-because i wouldn't have my wisdom teeth out.

Hang on in there babies..I'm 47 Grin

Oh yeah, I'm a wee bit smug about my bum-length thick and shiny hair too. Especially as all I do to it is wash it in Ecover washing up liquid twice a week and brush it most days [hgrin]

I'm going to have to get mine chopped too. I'm job-hunting and I can't seem to get it to do anything smart and tidy, I just end up all sweaty and cross with aching arms.

Did you go for something drastically short or an inbetween length?

MrsColumbo · 22/10/2010 21:29

Feelin' smug tonight - it's nearly half nine and I'm still awake! You lot have stopped me from zonking out on the sofa - cheers, girls!

Diziet · 22/10/2010 21:48

I've thought about something else to be smug about: I bought a cd purely on the strength of a good review and it is really good! [hgrin]
Go me!!
And I have nice skin and rarely get spots (crosses fingers)!!

stealthpony · 22/10/2010 22:21

Of course I've never had an orgasm during sex!
