That some people are smug about odd things?

General thread, not directed at anyone but perhaps inspired by a few recent threads [and my mum]

What odd things have you heard people be all smug about. When my dear mum is about to be oddly smug her voice gets really loud and she puts on a weird posh voice [bless her]

The sentence almost always starts with 'of course'

i.e. 'of course we never watch Coronation Street' Now why on earth would you think that was something to be smug about particularly as [at the time] she did watch Treasure Hunt [v.camp and odd game with Aneeka whatshername]

TV often comes into this sort of thing. NOT having a tv at all is often smugged about [not everyone who doesnt have a tv is like this obviously and this is not a thread to attack non tv watchers honest )

Heard any good ones lately?

that obviously was meant to be [hhmm]

FlyingInTheCLouds · 21/10/2010 18:19

Your right about the Asda thing, think that is snobbery rather than smugness. Unless of course they are smug that they can afford to go elsewhere.

I am secretely smug that my dcs only watch a relatively little amount of tv, but never let on because it's impossible to mention it in rl without sounding judgy.

LittleRedPumpkin · 21/10/2010 18:31

'Of course, we didn't have our babies scanned when we were pregnant as they were healthy pregnancies'.

Just wrong and weird on so many levels, especially since this was a response to someone's first scan pictures of their (apparently healthy!) baby.

I am weirdly smug about being pulled over masses of times but never charged or cautioned for my driving. I have no idea why it pleases me, but it does.

jafina · 21/10/2010 18:33

I could be here all day with MIL's smug comments, here are a few highlights, they all start with "now WHY would I want.....

"a washing up machine?" (aka dishwasher, presumably only for lazy slatterns?)
"a microwave thing?"
"to use the web net?" (aka the Internet)
"to know how to drive?" (would rather be driven and have everyone else pay for petrol, insurance etc..)

Basically she is terribly smug about pretending it is still 1950 when life was SO much better!

jafina · 21/10/2010 18:36

My lovely stepmother's best comment to the annoyingly smug is often " and does that make you morally superior? " :o

I love that response and only wish I was brave enough to use it too!

Chil1234 · 21/10/2010 18:44

Length of labour (or complexity & gruesomeness of childbirth procedures).... and conversely, speed and painlessness of labour (or stoic refusal of pain-relief). Smugness at both extremes.

smellmycheese · 21/10/2010 18:52

I have friends who are reeeally smug about the fact that their ds never had a dummy.

ie:

'The one parenting choice we both agreed on, is that we didn't want a son of ours having a dummy' (while I'm frantically searching for one of dd's 5 dummies in my bag!)

He's now 2.5 and they're having to put that vile tasting stuff on his thumb to stop him sucking it. har de har de har.

Wallace · 21/10/2010 18:53

I'm feeling pretty smug at the moment that I am 8 months pregnant with my fourth baby and can still sneeze/cough repeatedly and NOT wet myself Grin

hackingandhewing · 21/10/2010 18:55

chil1234 it amazes me how giving birth turns in to a competition.

A girl I work with has just found out she is PG after trying for 10 years. I swear the girl will be scared shitless by the time she goes into labour - the stories flying round are truly horrific and, I suspect, much exaggeratd.

Come to think of it, I am feeling quite smug about the fact that I am refusing to tell her my birth stories.

BrainMash · 21/10/2010 18:55

I've heard someone being smug about paying their window cleaner more than someone else Hmm
I suppose they were smug because it implied they have more windows, and therefore a bigger house.

I've heard a few smug voices lately 'complaining' they wont be getting child benefit soon.

BrainMash · 21/10/2010 18:57

Oh, and a friend who is smug her DC's aren't allowed to watch X Factor. Except I know they do!

smellmycheese · 21/10/2010 19:00

wallace, you should feel free to shout that one from the rooftops Grin

Chil1234 · 21/10/2010 19:00

I have been accused of being smug simply for having a 'British accent' on one occasion... (I was in the US at the time)

HalloweeseG · 21/10/2010 19:01

I find people "with faith" terribly smug. As if their moral compass is somehow more highly tuned than mine.

Jellykat · 21/10/2010 19:16

I feel smug that i cracked open a family bar of 'fruit and nut'last weekend, and i've still got half left!

curiouscat · 21/10/2010 19:18

I'm smug because next week's half term and DH and I are leaving our 3 dcs with grandparents and spending 3 nights together in a hotelGrin

BEWITCHEDnod · 21/10/2010 19:38

I'm smug that DS loves books.

Clearly in my smug mind his love of books means he's some kind of genius, whereas the reality is that he probably likes me reading to him as it means I'm giving him my full attention and not mumsnetting doing extremely important jobs around the house.

SlaughteredSheep · 21/10/2010 19:42

Wow Jellykat, I admire your will power! If it was me it would have been gone in one sitting! [hgrin]

TheBolter · 21/10/2010 19:45

My friend is smug about the natural birth she had with her twins, and seven years later she still bangs on about her breathing techniques whenever she gets a chance.

YAWWWWWNNNN....

pissedrightoff · 21/10/2010 19:46

wallace I would be very smug about that, very smug indeed.

PlentyOfPockets · 21/10/2010 19:49

I'm irrationally smug about:

  • only watching TV if it has a proper script and paid actors (which means I get to watch soaps Grin )
  • my DCs have always eaten vegetables
  • having a compost heap

I'm irrationally irritated by people who are smug about

  • the age their DC learnt to read
  • housework
  • funny diets
Wallace · 21/10/2010 19:54

Thanks, I will continue being smug Grin

It was nice to be able to share as I haven't found anyone to share it with in RL apart from dh who goes Hmm

Parsgirl · 21/10/2010 19:59

Eminem pissed me off the other day being 'smug' about not using profanities in front of his children. If he's that concerned why does he use them in his songs and write the racist/bigotted/sexist lyrics that other peoples children get peer pressured into listening to!

PutTheKettleOn · 21/10/2010 19:59

The people who are smug about their kids never watching tv, yet the kids somehow know all the names of the in the night garden characters and have a peppa pig doll... Hmm

Oh, and I soon realised an NCT class was not the place to talk about Big Brother... TIDAL WAVE of smugness about reality tv!

BonnyDay · 21/10/2010 19:59

im pleased not to watch soaps
