They all churn out the same tired old stuff slightly rehashed every now and again, there's no proper journalism, hardly any proper reviews, no insight into anything. They're all so boring!

OP posts:

WOW Boffinmum, I am well impressed ! I love Martha. What was it like there ? We went to NY a couple of years ago and I really wanted to go to MSHQ but DH wouldn't let me (probably knew how much money I would spend on "tat")

MyThumbsHaveGoneWeird · 22/10/2010 20:57

An American friend lent me a few copies of Bust magazine.

www.bust.com

that was fantastic, really interesting articles, non-patronizing and loads to read. Don't know if it is available here though.

I agree, all the ones you see in the newsagents here are rubbish. The other day I went to buy myself a magazine as a treat before a flight. I had got Olive (food magazine) for free in the airport, and all the others looked rubbish. I brought a newspaper instead and saved about 3 quid.

BoffinMum · 22/10/2010 21:00

Don't be so impressed! I worked in the UK and we were doing bits and pieces to support the main effort. I do quite like it as a mag, I have to say.

Quiltingghostie · 22/10/2010 21:01

I love Martha too Blush even though I know i shouldn't. Never bought the mag though.

sunfunandmum · 22/10/2010 21:10

SarfE tell me the URL of your blog immediatly. It surely is the answer to all my Xmas present problems.

I like printed the best too. But.

iwastooearlytobeayummymummy · 22/10/2010 21:12

Fibilou
I'm sure that when Eve was launched it was a BBC publication, and a print version of Woman's hour

SarfEasticated · 22/10/2010 21:53

clearconsciencechristmas.blogspot.com/

Here you go sunfunandmum hope it helps! :)

SolidButShamblingUndeadBrass · 22/10/2010 21:57

BOffin: Er, there is a whole Freelancers Topic on MN...

BoffinMum · 22/10/2010 22:06
Blush

Didn't think there would be one!

SarfEasticated · 22/10/2010 22:44

Is there cake? And holiday pay? I miss holiday pay :(

PurpleCrazyHorse · 22/10/2010 22:48

I've switched to Simply Knitting :) Blush

Nevertooearlyforcake · 22/10/2010 22:49

YADNBU - so much utter drivel out there. Am going to get the FT tomorrow as it keeps being recommended to me on the strength of its weekend magazine (though the paper in the week periodically releases the cringy "How to spend it" magazine which almost puts me off).

MsKalo · 22/10/2010 22:57

Yep Easy Living is good! Mags are not as good as they were though

MsKalo · 22/10/2010 22:58

Easy living mag

sunfunandmum · 22/10/2010 23:03

Thanks for the link SE looks great - will be investigating further!

wukterWOOO · 22/10/2010 23:17

But isn't MN a magazine anyway? A magazine version would miss out on the comments & discussion. That would be a shame no matter how good the OP articles are.

2rebecca · 22/10/2010 23:22

I think the idea of a "women's" magazine is the problem. I have magazines related to my hobbies, in the same way most men do.
Womens magazines are mainly for advertisers and as I have minimal interest in expensive make up, fashion and "celebrities" I give them a wide berth.

babyphat · 23/10/2010 16:52

not read whole thread but BUST is alright though a bit eager and women's studies-y.

babyphat · 23/10/2010 16:54

oops just seen MTHGW's post above Blush

babyphat · 23/10/2010 16:58

ps BUST subscription v easy and cheap to UK

EvilAllenPoe · 24/10/2010 14:36

bloody good point wukter

TheSmallClanger · 24/10/2010 16:37

I have just seen a new magazine: The Gentlewoman.
It claims to be about "influential women to love and admire". It looks very photography-oriented and has a picture of a female fashion photographer wearing a false moustache on the front.

I may buy when I get another spare minute.

Fibilou · 05/11/2010 17:18

To whoever recommended The Lady - thankyou. I bought it last week and we had a very enjoyable evening together Grin

GetOrfMoiLand · 05/11/2010 17:21

I too skimmed through The Lady a couple of weeks back and was tempted to buy it.

I am 32 for crying out loud.

Boobalina · 05/11/2010 17:37

I've started getting Tatler and Vogue, so I can gaze longingly at all the lovely things, and feel a bit swish-swoo.

I also read She to pander to my desent nearer my 40s

Much less depressing than all the other shite out there and I dont feel crap about my self after!
