I was quoting the OP!!! not taling about my own DD!
The point I was trying to make is that Talk could be an imperative, but it could also be
a noun 'I gave a talk on China'
or part of an infinitive ' my mother-in-law likes to talk' or just an ordinaryverb 'i talk too quickly'.It is impossible to tell from a single word whether it is an imperative.

LittleRedPumpkin · 19/10/2010 17:56

arses - only if you're an old-fashioned style nazi. If so, then yes.

It's because, if you want to avoid splitting infinitives, the easiest way is usually to replace an adverb with an adjective: so, 'I try to describe accurate English grammar' is the only way to phrase that sentence.

tokyonambu · 19/10/2010 19:33

"It's because, if you want to avoid splitting infinitives,"

then you're already following ludicrous "rules", so you may as well add another.

And "accurately describing English grammar" is not the same as "describing accurate English grammar". PD James does the latter. She complains like mad about descriptive grammarians who do the former.

LittleRedPumpkin · 19/10/2010 21:18

I suppose so, tokyo, though I think if you are already following the said ludicrous rules, there is no difference. There's only grammar and 'bad' grammar!

But us taking the mickey is a bit different, because we know why certain rules don't really matter - that's very different from learning that 'enjoy' isn't a verb!

tokyonambu · 19/10/2010 21:41

Quite so. I think if enjoy is said not to be a verb, it's vital to ask what the teacher in question thinks it is. Because I really can't think what else anyone could suspect enjoy of being. I wonder what sentence the teacher would construct that shows enjoy doing something non-verby.

oops, sorry wotnochocs - I was flipping between the two threads, and only read the full OP on the other thread!
I thought it was a bit funny that you had exactly the same problem! Blush
