Sterilisation for money?

I know there is another thread on this, but the op makes no good points!

Ok the scenario.

Heroin addict goes out and hits an old lady over the head, takes her handbag and runs off. But is caught. Should they go to prison? I think most would say yes
So they are responsible for their actions in that account.

So why are they unable to make a decision to take £200 to be sterilised, If they are unfairly tempted by money, the same logic could surely be applied to any crime they commit.

I am all for this actually, i like the lady don't give a shit about the addict, they are big enough and ugly enough to stick a needle in their arm, so they can jog on. I am all for the children!

I think the biggest problem here is that the images used in the reporting of this are highly emotive - the newborn going through cold turkey made me cry, and made me glad that I've never touched a drug in my life (that wasn't prescribed, heh).

I can't imagine what it's like watching your own baby have to deal with that, and know it's your fault Sad No wonder a lot of addict mothers find it so hard to give up, as for a lot of them it's the only way they know how to make themselves feel better.

But the point here is, if you look at it objectively, this American woman is bribing addicts - she must know where that 200 quid is most likely to go. Wouldn't those same £200 be better spent trying to get those addicts who already have children off the drugs? I think she should focus on children that already exist rather than potential ones ...

However someone on this thread suggested temporary, chemical sterilization and I think that's a much better idea. I've known many drug addicts, and they've mostly been wonderful people who would make amazing parents, if only they could kick the habit. A temporary sterilization, maybe combined with some sort of help in giving up, would be a much better solution, if you ask me.

A hypothetical question: what if no money was being offered? Would people be as anti if the sterilisation was being offered free of charge but with no bribe/payment?

For what it's worth my thoughts are that addiction (drink, drugs whatever) is by its very nature selfish. The addict's number one priority is the next fix, not their children, and that makes for a bad parent.

The children have "human rights" too and sometimes the rights of a child should be more important than those of a negligent parent.

She does offer long term non permanent contraception. She does actively support them in rehab programmes . This is not a punishment for being an addict. She wants to help these long term addicts stop the problem ofmultiple pregnancies . We are talking women on their tenth pregnancies. . She has some telling statistics on her site. She is trying to prevent heartbreak and the endless cycle of pregnancy pain and loss. That is a good thing.
