I hate it.

I'm a demonstrative person by nature and prefer to give friend a hug, especially if I've not seen them for a while, and maybe a kiss on the cheek, but detest this fake new trend, especially with acquantices, or worse their husbands!

Grumpy old woman that I am.Grrr

Fibilou · 16/10/2010 00:23

hmm well I'm not French but I double kiss. I grew up with a french best friend and we lived next door to each other, in each others' pockets and went freely between our houses and families. So double kisses were normal for me then and I do it as a habit.

But obviously I am a bit twattish Wink

brimfull · 16/10/2010 00:24

when did it start?
90's??

OP posts:
2rebecca · 16/10/2010 00:28

Not really made it up to Scotland.
I don't like kissing anyone except immediate family and closest friends. Not even keen on kissing inlaws, uncles etc.

Mumcentreplus · 16/10/2010 00:28

wtf... double kissing husbands???

iwastooearlytobeayummymummy · 16/10/2010 00:29

definately the 90s
it most certianly did not happen in the 80s cos i was there!

unless you were a furrener Wink

Mumcentreplus · 16/10/2010 00:29

I kiss and hug at will...sue me Grin

ForMashGetSmash · 16/10/2010 00:31

I don't like kissing people full stop! I hate it when I go to shake hands and get slobbered on. Most Brits have not the skill to administer a "miss" instead of a kiss.

iwastooearlytobeayummymummy · 16/10/2010 00:31

but it's not the hug i object to, or cwtch as i prefer, it's the poncey mwah mwah

iwastooearlytobeayummymummy · 16/10/2010 00:33

nor do I mind a snog, but that's another story Smile

Mumcentreplus · 16/10/2010 00:34

I hate the poncey mwah!..smmooches Mash (on tha cheek)don't want to get killed Grin

usualsuspect · 16/10/2010 00:35

nah ..don't do the poncey airkissing thing ..very Ariminta poncington smithe

sunnydelight · 16/10/2010 00:41

DHs (French) family vary between 2/3/4 depending on where they live. 4 ffs!!! No need.

drfayray · 16/10/2010 01:54

Here in Brisbane, friends kiss but usually just the once. Well, the people in my circle do. We hug too. DS has just returned from 4 weeks in Madrid and now kisses me on both cheeks. He is 15 and I am not complaining.

His peer group all hug each other, boys and girls. No kissing, well as far as I know...

DD (12) hugs her mates whenever they meet and leave each other. I think it is sweet.

Nowt wrong with a bit of affection.

Mumcentreplus · 16/10/2010 02:06

Totally agree drfayray..(totally tempted to use drdeathray Grin )..affection is never a bad thing between friends Smile

MrsRhettKilledTheButler · 16/10/2010 02:20

i'm a self confessed affectionphobe but funnily enough i don't mind double kissing... especially if there is a mwah to go with it, probably because i see it as fake and not really affectionate Grin

Heracles · 16/10/2010 13:17

Being British I prefer to fax my hellos a day in advance.

winnybella · 16/10/2010 13:22

I have to say I always found it a bit bizarre when my French exP would triple kiss his mates Hmm

PenelopeTitsDropped · 16/10/2010 13:22

I triple kiss.

I'm a bit French.

When I do it, I make sure that I deposit a bit of Gallic spit in each ear.

MamaVoo · 16/10/2010 13:24

sunnydelight 4!! I pity you. DH's family are French and do 3 and it takes bloody ages to get through the front door what with all the kissing that has to go on. I think one kiss is fine but anything more feels a bit contrived.

jamaisjedors · 16/10/2010 13:27

I think it didn't start until v. late 90s.

I moved to France in 97 and people in the UK weren't doing it then.

I noticed it creeping in after I'd been gone a few years iyswim.

3thumbedwitch · 16/10/2010 13:32

triple-kissing = normal for Serbia and Russia too (have friends from both countries).

I realise the OP has stated that it's not so twattish if people have foreigh origins, but really - cultural crossovers are so common now, it's a bit daft to get het up over it.

Four though... !!
Grin

YunoWhatYouDidLastSummer · 16/10/2010 13:54

Double kissing is the polite way to greet someone you know, round my way.

I think it's a bit twattish to judge something as twattish because it isn't what you do.

You don't find me starting threads about how twattish your average brit comes across when they have no comfortable way of greeting people or introducing themselves.

Heracles · 16/10/2010 13:58

If greeting a male a gentle groping of his junk is sufficient; should you be meeting a female you must decide whether to squeeze one or both boobs but making a comedy noise when doing so is essential.

drfayray · 16/10/2010 14:04

Mumcentreplus..am now tempted to change name...Grin

But am a William Wegman fan and own a Weimaraner so have to stay as fayray. He is that artist who uses the Weim breed of dogs to dress up and take weird photos. His dogs were called FayRay and ManRay... sigh...[adoration icon].

I am an affectionate person and am happy to see my friends and will hug and kiss them. I hug and kiss DS and DD all the time as they are delicious.

I think OP is being a tad U.
