not particularly but I was reflecting only the other day that I can buy an entire school uniform for less than a tenner now but a loaf of bread costs 1.50!

I remember such things as school uniform costing a FORTUNE. It is the little things (made in England) that are screwing us all IMO

TrillianSlasher · 14/10/2010 13:26

95p!

What do you mean 'not popular make' - maybe they thought they were gourmet or something.

poorbuthappy · 14/10/2010 13:28

A normal packet of walkers?
Tell us which make please...

SecretNutellaFix · 14/10/2010 13:29

I look in horror at the prices of chocolate bars. 69p for a regular twix which is smaller than it used to be. Even 5 years ago, they were less than 40p.

Yet the price of Fry's Turkish Delight bars has changed by only 7 pence in that time. They used to be our "luxury" chocolate bar, for special treats only.

The price of some stuff has sky-rocketed; I fully understand about harvests and so on, but it's getting to the "Furcoat and no knickers" state of the economy.

SHRIIIEEEKPoolingBearBlood · 14/10/2010 13:30

yes even as a child with only pocket money to spend I remember that bars of chocolate etc were reasonable price. Now I am an adult with a full time job, I can no longer afford them :o

Gabby, I didn't understand your female presenters thread...

SHRIIIEEEKPoolingBearBlood · 14/10/2010 13:31

When I was at university in 1997 the chocolate vending machine charged 50p per bar and that was extortionate. Now they're 50p in the supermarket when they're on offer!

GabbyLoggon · 14/10/2010 13:52

I think it was called KETTLE

OP posts:
Theresaholeinyourmind · 14/10/2010 13:58

IIRC Kettle are supposed to be posh but it's delusions of grandeur to my mind. I thought they weren't nice at all, GL

JeezyPeeps · 14/10/2010 14:08

Kettle are hand cooked 'gourmet' crisps.

I'm not a fan, but some gourmet crisps are the same price and to die for!

bramblebooks · 14/10/2010 14:12

strewth!

I was bemoaning the cost of basics canned tomatoes in sainos this morning. I remember making meals with them when they were 9p (10 years ago tho!) and now they're 31p.

Lurpak has gone up 50p in 2 years.

Like many people, I now go past much of the food offerings instore as too expensive.

I am my aged granny!

I do, however, adore kettle cracked black pepper crisps.

GabbyLoggon · 14/10/2010 14:36

No, they did not do it for me.

I like M and S squares or rileys. walkers are high standaed.

OP posts:
iliketosleep · 14/10/2010 14:43

WHatever happened to penny chews? They are now 5p and up chews Hmm

SlightlyUndead · 14/10/2010 14:59

Was Shock the other day as a packet of normal walkers crisps in our local Tesco Metro were 70p - WTF? Not even 'greedy fucker grab bag' size.

Oh and about two years ago, those little round tins of vaseline were 99p, then a few people started carrying them round in their handbags and using as lip balm and suddenly they come in various flavours and cost £2.50

Yet I can go into Poundland and buy spare iphone speakers for £1.

PerpetuallyAnnoyedByHeadlice · 14/10/2010 15:30

I am a skinflint sensible mummy, and won't let the kids spend their £1 pocket money at the little shop near school anymore cos they have to spend 70p to get one bar of something or tube of sweets

I'd rather buy a 4 pack in tesco, then share them out (they pay the cost price to me) and they get to put most of the cash in their money box instead

i have not been in a motorway service station recently but I dread to think how much they charge for a mars/twix etc nowadays

GMajor7DeadlySins · 14/10/2010 15:35

Mmmmmm crisps Grin

DandyDan · 14/10/2010 15:52

Twixes in France are 2cm longer than the ones in the UK...

I remember when a bag of crisps cost 4p. It would kill me to pay a £1 for a single regular bag.

poorbuthappy · 14/10/2010 15:54

Kettle crisps are posh apparently, also the bags are bigger than the standard 28g (I think) walkers, hence the price.
They are definitely treat crisps in our house!

BalloonSlayer · 14/10/2010 15:58

Does anyone remember in the seventies that the price of a packet of crisps went down from 3p to 2.5p?

< sings > Oh Happeeee Day!

Denis Healy, I have loved you and your outrageous eyebrows ever since.

stressheaderic · 14/10/2010 15:59

500ml bottle of fizzy drink in some newsagents here - £1.19

RockBat · 14/10/2010 16:01

PerpetuallyAnnoyedByHeadlice I love your idea of a home-sponsored tuck shop and I'm going to be a franchisee when DD is old enough!

ElenorRigby · 14/10/2010 16:14

Lidl today- 6 pack Cheese n Onion 75p

loveulotslikejellytots · 14/10/2010 16:21

I am addicted to love energy drinks (caffeine based) and paid £2.39 for a can this morning Shock more fool me. In my defence I was on my way to work at 7:10 and nursing a semi hangover... but still.

It does amaze me that I can go and get clothes that cost less than a sandwich and a bottle of drink.

thrifty · 14/10/2010 16:22

it does seem a bit extortionate, but kettle chips are expensive to buy in, in the first place. they are larger bags though (around 40g iirc), the last time i bought a retail box in the cash and carry it worked out about 60p per bag incl vat for 18 bags of crisps, that was over a year ago. for what its worth, i had trouble selling them at 70p a bag, and ended up eating most of them myself (yum!)

Rentaghoste · 14/10/2010 17:00

Gawd, I'm old, I just about remember when a bag of crisps was 6d (yes thats an old sixpence) same price as a mars bar!

InGodWeTrust · 14/10/2010 18:20

ohhh how I love Kettle Chips!
