2 times this week they've knocked on the door and 2 times I've not answered it.

About 2 months ago,I got caught out and answered the door in the daytime,I was quite firm in telling the lady I am NOT INTERESTED,so why come back?

I'm sick of them peddling their religion at my doorstep.

Do they really think they will convert people on the doorstep?

HalfTermHero · 14/10/2010 17:26

I should think that a brisk 'Fuck Off' would cut it if they choose to darken your door again.

Thingumy · 14/10/2010 17:28

I just hate the fact that people feel they have a right to knock on my door with the intent to question my beliefs and to tell me 'their way is the right way'.

Bollocks.

my cleaner is a jw,she is waiting till the next life to have children as life on earth is so bad.

ornamentalcabbage · 14/10/2010 17:35

Followers of cults usually tend towards extremism, with non mainstream practises and beliefs. Whether you believe in them or not, not all religions have these characteristics.

I would put JWs in the cult category for their belief in refusing blood transfusions and going door to door, and not believing that Jesus was the son of God for example.

AnnieBeansMum · 14/10/2010 17:40

So anything that deviates from the normal catholic religion can be deemed as a cult?? Hmm

As for cults leaning towards extremism - I think this is a judgment call. I personally believe that dunking your newborn child in a basin of water to wash away the original sin is extreme behavior and borderline nuts too!

But, I'm not going to go too much further into this with you. These are my beliefs and I do not want to get into "religion bashing". Everyone is entitled to their own beliefs, just as I am entitled to mine.

twirlymum · 14/10/2010 17:45

Any doctrine that dictates what I can or cannot eat, what day of the week I can work on, how to dress, asks for money, mutilates baby boys/teenage girls, insists I have to be re-born, cleansed, audited, etc etc is IMO a cult.

I believe in science, not stories.

ornamentalcabbage · 14/10/2010 17:47

No no no. Anything that isn't catholic is a cult? I didn't say that at all! Go and look it up in a dictionary.

commanderprimate · 14/10/2010 17:47

They NEVER come to my door any more, due to the treatment a former flatmate (and friend) meted out to them.

Two JW ladies came to the door, Watchtowers in hand. My mate was initially polite, then grabbed the magazines and started screaming "Take your filthy lies and get out!" all the while hurling Watchtower after Watchtower at their fast retreating backs.

He's not lived here for nigh on ten years now, but they still remember it. I'm not condoning this sort of behaviour, but it's left us a good legacy - not one religious type has ever come round. In fact, I saw the JW's walking around recently and politely said something about it not being worth them coming to our door. "Yes, we all know about your house" the woman spat back. The tale has obviously been passed on to all prosletysers in the region.

AnnieBeansMum · 14/10/2010 17:54

"not believing that Jesus was the son of God for example."

This was why I mentioned catholicism ornamentalcabbage. No other reason.

seeker · 14/10/2010 17:56

Tell them you are a Roman Catholic. Or a member of the Plymouth Brethren.

So no, looking it up in a dictionary did not sway my views sorry.

lisad123isgoingcrazy · 14/10/2010 17:58

but JW do believe Jesus was gods son, they just dont believe he is god.

seeker · 14/10/2010 17:59

Neither do I - does that make me a Witness?

lisad123isgoingcrazy · 14/10/2010 18:03

LOL seeker, no just saw a comment above about JW being classed as a cult in someones opinion as they dont believe Jesus was gods son, when in fact they do believe he was gods son.
As for being a cult because of the blood thing, what about other religions that think fasting for weeks will get you into heaven? Or that admitting sign to a man in a box and saying hail marys means god forgives your sins? Each to there own and TBH Im quite upset about how rude people are about the whole thing. :(

lisad123isgoingcrazy · 14/10/2010 18:11

sciencific evidence does suggest use of blood isnt always the best course of action for many patients. news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/file_on_4/7482295.stm

JW dont have one leader to follow at all, lots of people take different roles but there isnt a head of church like a priest ect.

Dont have any signs or sybmols at all

Most have jobs fulltime or part time, plus their "jobs" as part of the religion.

Thingumy · 14/10/2010 18:11

I actually never commented on the religion Liasad- it was about them knocking on my door AGAIN after I said I was not interested in their beliefs.

OP posts:
ididnamechangeforthis · 14/10/2010 18:13

I think some mnetters have been very rude. Totally respect freedom of opinion and right of free speech etc etc but does that mean they have to be quite personal or agressive? Or is that just the AIBU Mumsnet way now {confused}

ididnamechangeforthis · 14/10/2010 18:14

should be Confused
stupid keyboard

lisad123isgoingcrazy · 14/10/2010 18:16

i understand that thingumy. I guess they called back thinking maybe someone else in the house might be intrested or they might have caught you on a bad day.
Just ask them to put you down as a do not call, or just put a sign on the door.

ornamentalcabbage · 14/10/2010 18:19

JWs are a 'Christian' religion that lie outside of the mainstream. Unlike the church of England, Scotland, Catholic church, baptists, methodists, and various other denominations, they don't believe Jesus is God and they disallow blood transfusions. Mainstream flavours of Islam, Hinduism, Judaism, or other religions are not cults either. I think your statement that all religions are cults is misguided. I am not saying that you don't have the right to believe that it's all rubbish. We are in agreement there!

Anyway I'm off to sort the children out. Have fun.

ornamentalcabbage · 14/10/2010 18:20

No disrespect intended to believers BTW.

AnnieBeansMum · 14/10/2010 18:22

We shall just have to agree to disagree on some things ornamentalcabbage. Grin

seeker · 14/10/2010 18:22

I don't know what 'disrespect" means in this context. It seems to me that for a lot of religious people, saying that you don't agree with theri beliefs is classed as disrespectful.

missmiss · 14/10/2010 18:26

I once flashed my tit at two Jehovah's Witnesses.

Actually, not entirely sure they were JWs but they were two little old ladies who wanted to tell me about Jesus. I'd been in bed and stumbled downstairs in my pyjamas when I heard the doorbell; it wasn't until I'd shut the door that I realised my pyjamas were actually an ancient jumper with a massive hole under the armpit, which had somehow twisted itself during the night so that it made a porthole around my boob.

I wondered why they were so quick to leave.

FlyingInTheCLouds · 14/10/2010 18:34

lisad - it's because it is deeply annoying having people repeatedly knocking on your door,

some days I have 5 people knocking on my door trying to sell windows/paving/gas/religion etc and it drives me (and the dog) insane especialy at nap time.

religion has the added layer of annoyance of someone telling you what they believe is right and what you believe is wrong.

I must say though the jw we get are far more polite than the effing british gas man we had yesterday.

though don't like it when they get their 8 year old to knock as his little face always looks disappointed as I close the door.
